Finding an abundance of new material bearing upon the operations in and around Phila delphia in the fall of 1777, the plan was extended until the result is this volume of nearly three hundred pages, con taining more than two hundred and twenty letters and opinions, not five of which have before been in print. If only as an evidence of the unused materials for American history, this collection has an interest; and the interest is heightened by the personal touches these buried and for gotten manuscripts give of the writers. It is not so much the importance of the military operations that appeals to us, as the unconscious and therefore free expression these leaders ofthe Continental army gave to their views and feelings. The campaign of 1777, with its hopes and dis appointments, is laid before us with a vividness of detail that no historian could imitate. In such a wealth of new material it would not be possi ble to direct attention to the more important pieces. I may, however, be pardoned for believing the record of the Board of War, printed on page 175, to be an important record because of the light it throws upon one of the lead ing actors in the Conway cabal against Washington. Organized on December 7, 1747, at Philadelphia, the Military Association, an all-volunteer military establishment pledged to the defense of Pennsylvania, served as the de facto armed force for Pennsylvania, a colony whose leadership, a loose coalition of Quaker and German pacifists, land barons, and merchants, foreswore military preparedness on religious and ideological grounds. For the Associators, including their most noted supporter, Benjamin Franklin, a defenseless colony was no longer practical. During the War of Austrian Succession and again in the Seven Years' War, Associators organized defense efforts in defiance of the Pennsylvania colonial leadership. Associators also helped defend American Indian refugees against the infamous Paxton Boys in 1764.
