Book excerpt: The aim of this AGARD lecture Series is to present an extensive overview of the role of aeromechanics in rotorcraft development. The influence of helicopter ability on operation of military helicopters as well as the impact of military applications on rotorcraft design are evident. Following an introduction dealing with the general role of aeromechanics for rotary wing aircraft, the lectures covered rotorcraft aerodynamics, rotorcraft noise, dynamics of advanced rotor systems, mission requirements, handling qualities, simulation, flight testing, and advanced rotorcraft systems.

Book Synopsis The Role of Dual-Use Helicopters in the Security and Defence Field by : Alessandro Marrone

This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current debate on military capabilities and defence industry, the term “dual-use” means those technologies that can be used to develop systems and equipment for both civilian and military purposes. Changes occurred in modes of technological innovation have brought about a growing interconnection between the civilian, security and defence sectors, especially from an industrial point of view. In this context, “dual-use helicopters” refer to platforms that have been designed in compliance with certain standards and are structurally built so that they can satisfy civilian, military or security users with only minimal adjustments or additions. This volume analyses the use of helicopters by armed forces, law enforcement agencies and emergency services, in three countries: Italy, France and the United Kingdom. Such landscape is diversified and fragmented, with different approaches and above all helicopter fleets made up of diverse platforms of subsequent generations – some with more than 30 years of life cycle behind them. In all three countries, national defence budget’s restrictions have demanded more efficient solutions for the necessary fleet renewal and management in the medium term – a renewal often coupled with a quan-titative reduction. In this respect, the option of a dual-use helicopter becomes interesting in that it ensures greater security, effectiveness and efficiency in use by armed forces. This calls for a common and in-depth reflection on the problem by all actors in the defence and security field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews some human factors research issues, the resolution of which will be vital to the successful operations of future military helicopters. The Aeromechanics Laboratory is contributing to the overall effort of understanding and reducing the helicopter pilot's workload by engaging in a diverse program directed at answering some of the more fundamental questions relating to the transfer of information between man and machine. Primary issues involve the integration of controls and displays and interactions between pilot and automated systems. The results of three experimental studies address the issues of display-control compatibility, characteristics of integrated controllers, and voice systems.

Book Synopsis The Foundations of Helicopter Flight by : Simon Newman
Download or read book The Foundations of Helicopter Flight written by Simon Newman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The helicopter is a sophisticated aircraft and is therefore demanding on its designers. This unique introductory text charts a journey through the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. The difficulties that can arise when the aircraft is considered as a whole are highlighted using many practical examples and case studies. The author examines these problems for situations in which the helicopter is operating on the ground or in flight. The book provides in-depth support for any first course in helicopter engineering. It introduces the principles of rotary wing flight and develops the fundamental equations describing the performance and dynamic behaviour. Essential theories are developed and applied to show how the capabilities and behaviour of a helicopter are influenced by the manner in which rotor characteristics interact with those of the airframe. The author’s broad experience as a design engineer and lecturer combine to produce a book for students, graduates and professionals that conveys not only the essential information but also a real enthusiasm for the subject.
