Book excerpt: The story centres around Dikeledi, a young girl in the independent homeland of Transkei, one of the Bantustans of the former apartheid era in South Africa. The Sotho tribe is in the minority in this area and culture still plays a very big role in the villages. Education is not a priority for most of the people there, so when Dikeledi meets and falls in love with a youth in high school, she is confused by his ambitions to study further and go to university. They marry despite the fact that her husbands mother hates her, mainly due to the fact that Dikeledi is not traditionally considered beautiful, comes from a poor home and her family is not known in the village, neither is she a relative. Apartheid laws ensure that, even when Dikeledis husband wants to take her with him to Johannesburg, without valid documents, it is near impossible for her to live with him, and she has to endure her mother-in-laws abuse.

Book Synopsis Active Volcanoes of the Southwest Indian Ocean by : Patrick Bachelery
Download or read book Active Volcanoes of the Southwest Indian Ocean written by Patrick Bachelery and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piton de la Fournaise and Karthala are both shield volcanoes in the southwest Indian Ocean. This publication summarizes the work done on these very active basaltic volcanoes. Piton de la Fournaise has a long history of scientific research and monitoring, with many data collected during recent eruptions. It is certainly one of the most studied volcanoes in the world. The work presented in this monograph includes geological, geophysical, geochemical and petrological aspects, but also studies on physical geography, natural hazards and the sociological and behavioural approaches.' The Karthala volcano may be less well known, but it serves as an interesting comparison to Piton de la Fournaise. Although situated close to the volcanoes of Hawaii, it differs from them by its more alkaline magmas and less frequent activity. It was also monitored for more than 25 years, producing extraordinary eruptions in recent years.

Book Synopsis Helliconia Spring by : Brian W. Aldiss
Download or read book Helliconia Spring written by Brian W. Aldiss and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author and Science Fiction Grand Master delivers a sweeping epic of a planet suffering deadly conditions of alternating extremes in this Nebula Award finalist Helliconia follows an eccentric orbit around a double-star system with a twenty-six-hundred-year cycle of very long seasons. As spring slowly breaks the brutally long winter, humans emerge from hiding and a long sequence of civilization and growth begins to repeat again, unbeknownst to the participants but watched by an orbiting satellite station, Avernus, created by Earth some centuries ago. Humans free themselves from slavery to the aboriginal Phagors, and religion and science flower and expand. Brian W. Aldiss has, for more than fifty years, continued to challenge readers’ minds with literate, thought-provoking, and inventive fiction. Helliconia Spring’s prescience with regard to climate change is nothing short of extraordinary.

Book Synopsis The Secret History of the World by : Mark Booth
Download or read book The Secret History of the World written by Mark Booth and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New York Times bestselling work reimagines world history though the belief systems of Freemasons, Rosicrucians, Kabbalists, and others. They say that history is written by the victors. But what if history as we know it written by the wrong people? What if everything we’ve been told is only part of the story? In this groundbreaking and controversial work, Mark Booth embarks on an enthralling tour of our world’s secret histories. Booth starts from a dangerous premise: That the stories put forward by the world’s various cults and mystical traditions are true. From there he relates a deeply provocative alternate history of the past 3,000 years. From Greek and Egyptian mythology to Jewish folklore, from Christian cults to Freemasons, from Charlemagne to Don Quixote, from George Washington to Hitler—Booth shows that history needs a revolutionary rethink, and he has 3,000 years of hidden wisdom to back it up.
