Book excerpt: POETRY IN MOTION explores a deep cavern within our emotional spheres, not one that is likely avoided or denied, by shellacking over with immeasurable amounts of positivity, as the obvious way to bevel it off. Keep it well out of reach. Deny it to exist. Which is quite right indeed, since this sort of emotional, sublime, blunt and brave if you will, way of looking into the Human Heart is exacerbating and ironic, to say the least, putting it mildly. Honestly, it reminds us of why we choose to live our lives, seeking out the good in all things, as opposed to being enveloped by the cold, lonely darkness of what should not be. The popular Satire is entertaining and informative, yet impressionable minds should recognize that the writer here seeks to challenge your thoughts of wholesomeness or do you just fall into the mainstream of, Group Think or inferior thinking, merely to fit in? Even, if that may be a wrong thing? Fitting in and standing out have two different effects. The underlying statement being, its so very important not to come to simple, judgmental conclusions and carefully think out a worthy outcome, based on what you know to be correct and true, if not for others, for your own peace of mind! Always knowing that Art, stands on its own, as a way of furthering ourselves in Life, like Romantic Love.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize * Poet Laureate of the United States * * A New York Times Notable Book of 2011 and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice * * A New Yorker, Library Journal and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year * New poetry by the award-winning poet Tracy K. Smith, whose "lyric brilliance and political impulses never falter" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) You lie there kicking like a baby, waiting for God himself To lift you past the rungs of your crib. What Would your life say if it could talk? —from "No Fly Zone" With allusions to David Bowie and interplanetary travel, Life on Mars imagines a soundtrack for the universe to accompany the discoveries, failures, and oddities of human existence. In these brilliant new poems, Tracy K. Smith envisions a sci-fi future sucked clean of any real dangers, contemplates the dark matter that keeps people both close and distant, and revisits the kitschy concepts like "love" and "illness" now relegated to the Museum of Obsolescence. These poems reveal the realities of life lived here, on the ground, where a daughter is imprisoned in the basement by her own father, where celebrities and pop stars walk among us, and where the poet herself loses her father, one of the engineers who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. With this remarkable third collection, Smith establishes herself among the best poets of her generation.

Book excerpt: My mother told me, on more than one occasion, that I was almost born in an elevator. I do not doubt that statement one iota for my life has been nothing but a series of ups and downs ever since. I really cant sit still. Even my lovely bride of almost four decades hollers at me because I twitch, sometimes violently, when I sleep. Hence the title of this latest work: Owen in Motion. Owen in Motion is Dougs fifth volume of poetry and writings. In this book the reader will be enriched, inspired, encouraged and entertained. At times, the reader will be treated to a poem or tale of spiritual content, only to be followed by a simple poem with a twist of both tongue and mind. Throughout the book are poems and writings about love and loss, marriage and family life, spiritual journeys and living large, which will cause the reader to pause and reflect on both the simple and deep things in life. As was true for his first four books, once you pick it up you will have trouble putting it down.

Book excerpt: A poetry collection that both illustrates what mindfulness is and encourages young, growing minds to be present, from poet and educator Georgia Heard, with art by Isabel Roxas. Poets have long observed the world in a mindful way. They point out beauty we might have missed, draw our attention to our inner thoughts, and call us to see our society in new ways. But as daily life become more and more chaotic, children grow distracted. According to the CDC, 9.4% of children have ADHD and 7% have anxiety/depression. And these numbers continue to climb. As treatment doctors recommend healthy eating, physical activity, plenty of sleep, and mindfulness techniques. Georgia Heard is a poet and educator—and she has long had her own meditation practice. In My Thoughts Are Clouds, she uses poetry to demonstrate what mindfulness is and gives kids—and their parents and teachers—accessible ways to learn mindfulness tools.

Book excerpt: Carrie C. Riley-Johnson was born to Robert and Mattie Mae Riley, in Los Angeles, California on April 23, 1949. Carrie has one sister, Mary Ann Riley-Johnson of Ringgold, Louisiana and one brother, Robert Joe Riley of Hawthorne, California. She remembers her family as loving and supportive. Other than Carrie's immediate family; her great aunt, Maggie Iverson, born April 18, 1894, was most influential in transmitting the family's history. The stories Maggie told Carrie helped her to understand the circumstances of the Descendants of the African Slaves' plight, as she talked with Aunt Maggie nearly every week or so of her adult life. She came to realize that even those descendants embraced diversity. Carrie enjoys reading history and cultural humanitarian stories. Her hobbies are writing and editing books and poetry. For example: She worked as an editing consultant on "The Last Remnants of Slavery: An African American Dilemma", a most recent book written and published by Arthur J. Stovall, Ph.D. Carrie attended public schools in the suburbs of California cities. She is a graduate of Redlands University in Redlands, California, and California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. She holds a Master of Arts in Management and a Bachelor in Humanities English. She was the first of three children to obtain a college degree. For more than 30 years in the workforce, Carrie worked for major corporations as manager of procedural writing, manager and director of internal auditing; and as a paralegal and office manager. This is not her first time writing and publishing poetry. One of her most popular poems, "Destiny" is published in the book entitled: "Poetry in Motion", by The Poetry Guild in 1998 (Page 186).
