Book excerpt: The novel "Deep in the Hearts of Texans" takes place in the 1800's after the Civil War. It is a story of a group of men who have a friendship as in the old Greek story of Damon and Pythias. The men live on a ranch that is owned by the man who was their Major during the war. Jake Evans and the Major were longtime friends. Red was the young man who had followed Jake; Jericho likewise followed Red. Louis Calvin and Johnny Meyers were boys taken in by Jericho. All of them tried to follow in the steps of Jake. He was thought of by many as a god of the plains. The Major has a young daughter, and his best friend Jake, an unwritten partner, has a son only a few years older. After Jake and his wife pass on, Matt is raised by the Major and his wife. When the Major's wife passed away a few years later, he realizes that his daughter and this boy he thought of as a son are showing an interest in each other. Cindy always knew that Matt was the love of her life. Matt has recently come to the realization that he is falling in love with Cindy. The Major's reaction to this knowledge puts into motion events that no one could predict. The story takes you through gunfights, friendships, love and searches through rugged terrain with many obstacles. It also explores the deep feelings felt at the loss of ones who can never be replaced. Travel with these men through dangers and heartaches to find Matt and in doing so, find there is more to life than the ranch. Their encounters are not only with Indians and killers, but with some lovely women as well. All this shows that love can blossom in adversities and touch deep in the hearts of Texans. Book excerpt: My name is Texas and this is my story. The daughter of a Southern Baptist pastor, I ran away from home when I was 17. For 28 years I traveled a path that took me to places from which few return. Unhealthy relationships and unbridled lusts corrupted my view of freedom and left me cornered in addiction--financed by crafty manipulation and drug dealing. My tainted knowledge of love and polluted desire for escape kept me on a treacherous treadmill that continually fed the heartache of those I loved. But, through it all, the One who loved me unconditionally remained. This is my unvarnished account of the years I spent running and what brought that season to its redeeming end.

Book excerpt: This is a Romeo and Juliet, West Side, love story, set in the South. A story of forbidden love between black and white. In the early 1970s the color of a person's skin was the first and most recognizable physical characteristic of an individual living in the Deep South, and it was understood in the society that black and white did not mix. How this young couple managed to survive the explosive racist emotions of those violent days is a tale that must be told! You cannot miss this! Indeed, these two young people never really expected to live to see this story to conclusion. What is truly amazing is the single fact that they managed to survive. The bullets missed their mark. The knives went awry. And the gangs could not discourage this warrior on a mission of love. It is a critical examination of American life and society in Texas. This is an inspiring tale! This story chronicles the history of how two people in love came to be together and stay together--against all odds. The raw emotions of love are exposed as these two young people journeyed through triumphs and tragedies. There was violent opposition at every turn. It was a test of will and fortitude. It is also a comedy that can only be appreciated now, in this day and age. It's a tale of overcoming the odds and winning. Moreover, we are the richer for it, for now we have this amazing story. This story is truly unbelievable, and yet, it happened.

Book excerpt: Texas is a diverse state. But the one thing that binds Texans more than their state pride, even more than religion, is football. For the many towns and cities of Texas, high school football is more than a sport or an extracurricular activity—it’s the glue of their community. Author Gray Levy, a high school football coach for more than two decades, became disillusioned with the state of the education system nationwide and traveled to Texas, a place where high school football still matters, to see just what schools and communities were doing right. What he found will both confirm and debunk common presumptions about high school football in Texas, a complex phenomenon that varies by region, school size, and the ethnic diversity of the Lone Star State.

Enjoy a unique bit of Texas history by visiting a wide variety of restaurants located in unusual historic settings-a gritsmill, a Dr. Pepper bottling plant, a church, and a funeral home, to name a few. Two recipes from each establishment are offered to form a well balanced selection of Texas cuisine. A brief history of each of the 70 restaurants is included, followed by basic information such as hours of operation, location, and other important details. The recipes themselves are an eclectic mix of the simple and the exotic, from the Cowboy Omelet at Beaumont's The Pig Stand to the Jicama Salad at Dallas's famous Mansion on Turtle Creek. Two indexes, one to restaurants and the other to recipes, make the book equally useful as both a travel guide and a cook book.

Book excerpt: Native Texan: Stories from Deep in the Heart is a lively and personal tour of small town and big city Texas in search of what makes the state unique. Nationally acclaimed columnist Joe Holley is widely loved for his popular “Native Texan” column, which appears in the Houston Chronicle. In thirty stories curated from column archives, Holley introduces readers to his favorite people and places across the state. From interviews on the “weird” streets of Austin and his search for ghosts in Bigfoot to a decades-long love affair with everything about Marathon and hikes on the back trails of the Big Bend, Holley is a masterful storyteller. His instincts are backed by a seasoned journalist’s passion to measure legends and tall tales against investigations into what really happened. He reveals small-town Texas, and some small towns within the largest cities, with a style that has proven popular with readers and a keen eye for a unique spin on an old story. The result is an entertaining and certainly surprising view of the Lone Star state.
