Book excerpt: Sarah Orne Jewett (September 3, 1849 - June 24, 1909) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet, best known for her local color works set along or near the southern seacoast of Maine. Jewett is recognized as an important practitioner of American literary regionalism ewett's family had been residents of New England for many generations, and Sarah Orne Jewett was born in South Berwick, Maine. Her father was a doctor, and Jewett often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people. As treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that developed in early childhood, Jewett was sent on frequent walks and through them also developed a love of nature. In later life, Jewett often visited Boston, where she was acquainted with many of the most influential literary figures of her day; but she always returned to South Berwick, small seaports near which were the inspiration for the towns of "Deephaven" and "Dunnet Landing" in her stories.

Originally published in 1877, the book demonstrates Jewett's astute observation of rural life and her talent for capturing the subtleties of interpersonal interactions. "Deephaven," a compilation of connected stories set in a fictional New England coastal hamlet, is the book's main attraction. Jewett creates a realistic picture of the people and dynamics of Deephaven through vivid and in-depth descriptions. The chosen tales and illustrations that Jewett created after "Deephaven" exhibit her talent for capturing the intricacies of human nature as well as the allure of small-town living. "Deephaven and Selected Stories and Sketches" is praised for its sensitive portrayals of human relationships, vivid portrayals of rural life, and late 19th-century contribution to American literary realism. The anthology is still a living example of Jewett's skill as a writer and her ability to convey the atmosphere of her day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had been spending the winter in Boston, and Kate Lancaster and I had been together a great deal, for we are the best of friends. It happened that the morning when this story begins I had waked up feeling sorry, and as if something dreadful were going to happen. There did not seem to be any good reason for it, so I undertook to discourage myself more by thinking that it would soon be time to leave town, and how much I should miss being with Kate and my other friends. My mind was still disquieted when I went down to breakfast; but beside my plate I found, with a hoped-for letter from my father, a note from Kate. To this day I have never known any explanation of that depression of my spirits, and I hope that the good luck which followed will help some reader to lose fear, and to smile at such shadows if any chance to come.Kate had evidently written to me in an excited state of mind, for her note was not so trig-looking as usual; but this is what she said:—Dear Helen,—I have a plan—I think it a most delightful plan—in which you and I are chief characters. Promise that you will say yes; if you do not you will have to remember all your life that you broke a girl's heart. Come round early, and lunch with me and dine with me. I'm to be all alone, and it's a long story and will need a great deal of talking over.

Download or read book Sarah Orne Jewett written by Paula Blanchard and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2002-09-13 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for her masterpiece, The Country of the Pointed Firs, Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) is a writer with enormous resonance for our time. Our fascination with place, with traditional values, and our yearning for a rural utopia all find fulfillment in Jewett's portrayal of the "grand and simple lives" of coastal Maine. In this delicious portrait, Paula Blanchard (biographer of Margaret Fuller and Emily Carr) plunges us into New England literary life in turn-of-the-century Boston, into the circles of Henry James, Lowell, Howell, Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. She delves into Jewett's close friendships with women, from the young Willa Cather and the flamboyant "Mrs. Jack" Gardner, and especially to Annie Fields, her partner in a sustaining "Boston marriage." Her enthralling and insightful glimpses into Jewett's fiction will send readers racing back to a writer of whose work Kipling said "it is the very life."
