Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations in advance of housing development at Longforth Farm, Wellington revealed limited evidence for late prehistoric settlement, but the principal discovery was the remains of a previously unknown high status medieval building complex. This is thought to have been a manor house and though heavily robbed, key elements identified include a hall, solar with garderobe and service wing. A forecourt lay to the north and a service yard with at least one ancillary building and a possible detached kitchen to the south. To the east was a complex of pits, enclosure and field ditches and a pond. ere was a restricted range and number of medieval finds, but together these suggest that occupation spanned the late 11th or 12th century to probably the 14th century. There was a notable group of medieval floor tiles and roof furniture, but documentary research has failed to identify the owners and any records relating specifically to this important building. One possibility is that it belonged to the Provost of Wells cathedral, and was perhaps abandoned in the 14th century when the Bishops may have established their court within the nearby and then relatively new market town of Wellington.

Book excerpt: "This dedicated volume of the Journal of the British Archaeological Association draws together ten papers which, collectively, explore something of the art and architecture, styles and uses, of the medieval cloister in England and Wales. Contributors consider the continental context, cloisters in English palaces, Benedictine and Augustinian cloister arcades in the 12th and 13th centuries, architecture and meaning in Cistercian east ranges, late medieval vaulted cloisters in the West Country, cloisters at the cathedrals of Old Sarum, Canterbury, and Lincoln, and assess the extent to which the cloister bosses at Norwich cathedral priory reflect contemporary religious politics. The volume also contains an extended consideration and gazetteer of all Cistercian cloisters in England and Wales."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Westminster' tiles - named after Westminster Abbey where they were first recognised - are among the most common types of medieval floor tiles found in London and can be distinguished from other medieval floor tiles by their size, poor quality and the clay used in their manufacture. Another distinctive feature is their unusually wide distribution - ranging from Canterbury in Kent to Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire - which may reflect the movement of tiles or the work of itinerant tilemakers. Over 160 different designs were produced, ranging from knights on horseback, heraldic shields, mythical beasts and fleurs-de-lis to abstract geometric designs. This Monograph includes an illustrated catalogue giving the provenance of each design, together with the plain-glazed examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological excavation, architectural survey and historical research carried out between 1978 and 1993 have elucidated the origins and early development of Wells Cathedral. Study concentrated primarily on the cloister and its adjuncts, and excavation took place in the adjoining ‘Camery’ garden. Here lay an ancient cemetery and the foundations of a succession of demolished buildings, ranging in date from Roman to post-medieval. Collectively, these enshrined a continuous development of religious and sepulchral activity, probably from the fourth to the mid-sixteenth century; secular uses followed. Adjacent to the Camery are the springs from which Wells takes its name. The first mention of the ‘holy well’ and minster church of St Andrew is in A.D. 766. Excavation yielded a complex stratigraphic sequence, demonstrating how an anonymous late Roman mausoleum burial probably provided the raison d’être for the development of a Middle Saxon cemetery and chapel, and hence for the origins of Wells Cathedral itself in 909. The establishment of this sequence is uniquely important in the history of English cathedral archaeology and sets Wells alongside developments in continental Europe.

Book excerpt: This work is intended as a modern successor to L.F. Salzman's "English Industries in the Middle Ages" (1913). The approach to each industry is by material, discussing its acquisition, working and sale as a finished product. Only industries that resulted in the production of consumer goods and where substantial numbers of artefacts survive from the Middle Ages are dealt with (fishing and brewing are therefore omitted); the text is illustrated by pictures of surviving objects and contemporary representations of medieval work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the design, manufacture and use of medieval floor tiles shows the long-lasting influence achieved in the north of England, especially by the Cistercian monasteries. It serves to demonstrate how these monastic houses made use of the resources and contacts available to them. The study focuses on one of the richest medieval floor tile assemblages in the world, with material from 118 sites. Over 500 different designs and 60 mosaic arrangements have been identified. Jennie Stopford examines the monastic influence on northern England's manufacture and use of floor tiles. Split into three sections - Chronological Survey, The Tile Groups, and The Sites and Collections - this in-depth study covers an immense body of work. Contents include: a view of the world - plain mosaic floor tiles and the Cistercians, c.1230-1270; long distance supply and personalised designs, c.1350; standardisation - plain-glazed tiles; the plain tile mosaic group, c.1220-1270; inferior quality plain mosaic, later 13th century; the decorated mosaic tile group, c.1300; parallels to the decorated mosaic tile group, possibly c.1300; the Nottinghamshire tile group, c.1325-1365; fourteenth-century copies; the plain-glazed tile groups; small assemblages dating from the 14th or 15th centuries; the Transpennine tile group, later 15th century; the Huby/Percy tile group, c.1500.
