Book excerpt: "Decoding the Enigma of “Natural Man” in Mark Twain’s Works" is an unexpected journey to the very heart of the utterly brightest American author, Mark Twain, the way he presented the phenomenon of “natural man” one of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy cornerstones. In this book, completely new for the genre, Taro Maeyashiki reveals the unique plan of Mark Twain’s fantastic worlds of literary characters using the one of the most noble and philosophical topics prisms. Maeyashiki, noticing, as the thick conceptual fog dissipates around the concept of “natural man,” explores how “natural man” can in fact be truly natural or free or innocent but at the same time, individual who has his sense of justice and injustice before a faceless society. Maeyashiki’s work is impressive not only due to derivative because, by analyzing, he tried to mean Twain’s perception of “natural man.” This work is not only to do with the literary world but venture into Twain’s internal essence analysis, his life, his philosophy, skepticism about the course of society development, and barely noticeable ideal simplification tendency, from the moral point of view. Referring to Rousseau’s theoretical notion of “natural man,” Maeyashiki writes that, essentially, Mark Twain was depicting the concept in his stories’ characters. This book is the readers’ dedication, as it allows us to look at Twain differently, through the high philosophical issues prism related to the essence of human nature and the destructibility of outer constrictions.

Book excerpt: Our minds have a secret passage into this life unlived. It’s beautiful how we design an entire universe with such little experience where consequences are just moments. Here, memories drawn from our fantasies come true. We are the people whom we have always wanted to be; the relationships that don’t exist there, exist here. At the confluence of everyone’s paradigms is where reality begins, and we accept it. The longing to live is surreal. Art helps you get there quickly. The photographs arrayed in this book are windows to the soul of the writing, and they will only make sense when placed together. I invite you to come along with me on this journey, a journey where I will pull you back through the crevices of my wall to show you how I broke it, we will walk with our fingers entwined into a world and feel what time could not heal. With your permission, let me make you feel some love, some passion and some hurt today. You were created to feel all of that too.

Book excerpt: The cover page of my book shows factsheets data available on the W.H.O. website. We can see, millions of people have died and many millions more will die in the coming future due to various diseases. Throughout the world, trillions of dollars are being invested to find solutions to various diseases and many more trillions of dollars will be invested in the coming future. All over the world scientists do perform experiments using well established protocols with or without minor modification as per their experimental approach. In this book, I have discussed a possible hypothesis behind 'Non-specific results' obtained by four techniques (Southern blotting, Northern blotting, Microarray, siRNA technology) which are widely used in molecular biology research. I have also tried to give a better hypothetical solution which can minimize experimental errors. I will introduce you to a broader definition of "Complementary" in DNA structure (which has never been discussed in standard biology books), a novel PD-PCR technology developed by me and presence of novel mirror repeat sequences within most of human genes. Hopefully knowledge within this book will be helpful in developing various molecular biology techniques which will not show any experimental error. Doing scientific experiments without any error will only solve the sufferings of mankind. After reading my book, feel to answer my only question, "Over a period of time, have we collected valid scientific data to be used by coming generation of young scientist in molecular biology research?"

She had been tortured and abused, and survived serious injuries inflicted by buyers and pimps, but this pain was nothing to her, compared to the pain of being deceived by the man she loved. She once tried to escape but failed, even though she cried, screamed for someone to help her, people just stood by watching, without even a look of sympathy, tears stream down my face. One rape leads to a lifetime of depression and women in this jungle get raped every day, twenty times, thirty times a day. All the women who work here have their own stories with one thing common: no one has come here out of their own choice! Even if they leave this place, where they will go? Society will always label them as prostitutes. It is impossible to feel their pain and to imagine the situation our children and we are in. At present, there exist more slaves than any other time in the world history. Saddening but truth is that we are living in a “Slave World”. No matter the slaves are from bonded labor, farms or flesh trade, all these forms of slavery put big question marks on our nation’s integrity. I believe everyone deserves life with dignity and a good future without selling flesh as written in article 21 of the constitution."

Book excerpt: What do you do when the rapist is someone you know? What do you do when he has been found innocent in the eyes of the law? Rhea, Hitaishi and Amruta’s friendship has been cemented over a lifetime, but now they find themselves struggling to answer these questions together. Nearly a decade has passed since Rahul Satyabhagi, heir to the mega Satyabhagi business empire, had raped Avni Rambha, bested her in court, and gone on to become a men’s rights activist, and the who’s-who of Badrid Bay had breathed a sigh of relief that the sordid mess was over. But now a sting operation proves what many, the three friends included, had suspected all along – he’d been lying. Furious that he has been exposed, Rahul plans to sue the media as well as his long-suffering victim. Now, Rhea, Hitaishi and Amruta find themselves at a crossroad - can they carry on doing nothing? DC Virendra Dixit was among those who’d believed that the Rambha rape case had been a ‘false allegation’, but now the sting tape brings him to a case that promises to be a turning point in his career. Just as he thinks he is nearing a resolution, he finds himself at a crossroad of his own. Rhea, Hitaishi and Amruta have carved out a path that has already affected DC Dixit’s, but do their paths cross? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? Can a story of hard questions and difficult choices have an easy resolution?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain is one of our most accessible cultural icons, a figure familiar to virtually every American and renowned internationally. But he was not always as we know him today. Mark Twain began life as a loose gathering of postures, attitudes, and voices in the mind of Samuel Clemens. It was some time before he took full possession of the personality the world now recognizes. This is the story of the coming of age of Mark Twain. It begins in 1867, with Clemens stepping off the steamship Quaker City and almost immediately declaring himself "in a fidget to move." It comes to a close in 1871, with Clemens settling in Hartford. Mark Twain was substantially formed during the intervening years, as Clemens came East, gained fame and fortune with the publication of Innocents Abroad, courted and married Olivia Langdon, and established himself as a professional writer. Each of these steps represented a profound change in the former Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope as he sifted through the elements in his personality and began to assume the qualities we now associate with him. The tale that unfolds here shows how, through that process, the Mark Twain of the late 1860s became the Mark Twain of all time. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprised by Laughter looks at the career and writings of C. S. Lewis and discovers a man whose life and beliefs were sustained by joy and humor. All of his life, C. S. Lewis possessed a spirit of individuality. An atheist from childhood, he became a Christian as an adult and eventually knew international acclaim as a respected theologian. He was known worldwide for his works of fiction, especially the Chronicles of Narnia; and for his books on life and faith, including Mere Christianity, A Grief Observed, and Surprised by Joy. But perhaps the most visible difference in his life was his abiding sense of humor. It was through this humor that he often reached his readers and listeners, allowing him to effectively touch so many lives. Terry Lindvall takes an in-depth look at Lewis's joyful approach toward living, dividing his study of C. S. Lewis's wit into the four origins of laughter in Uncle Screwtape's eleventh letter to a junior devil in Lewis's The Screwtape Letters: joy, fun, the joke proper, and flippancy. Lindvall writes, "One bright and compelling feature we can see, sparking in his sunlight and dancing in his moonlight, is laughter. Yet it is not too large to see at once because it inhabited all Lewis was and did." Surprised by Laughter reveals a Lewis who enjoyed the gift of laughter, and who willingly shared that gift with others in order to spread his faith.
