Book Synopsis Jean Ternant and the Age of Revolutions by : Frank Whitney
Download or read book Jean Ternant and the Age of Revolutions written by Frank Whitney and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Ternant's life (1751-1833) spanned a period of enormous change in European life. Born when men were still subject to judicial torture, he lived to see the dawn of the railroad age. It was an era of political upheaval: the American Revolution, the "patriot" movement of the Dutch Republic, the Vonckist uprising in the Austrian Netherlands, the French Revolution, the Polish rebellion against Imperial Russia, the Greek war for independence and the struggle for independence in Spain's South American colonies all occurred during Ternant's lifetime. He was an active participant in four of them. The son of a French leather goods merchant, Jean Ternant nevertheless built a public service career in an aristocratic society based on birth and privilege, commanding a regiment in the French army before being appointed minister-plenipotentiary to the United States. His story of public service undertaken for private ends illustrates the value of education and social contacts as well as the importance of luck and circumstances.
Book Synopsis Revolution in the House by : Margaret H. Darrow
Download or read book Revolution in the House written by Margaret H. Darrow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent did the French Revolution "revolutionize" the French family? In examining the changes in inheritance laws brought on by the Revolution, Margaret Darrow gives a lively account of the mixed effects legislation had on families of this period. As a test case, she has chosen the southern city of Montauban, whose Roman-based law enabling testators to appoint their heirs was contradicted by the new laws instituting equal inheritance. Filled with vivid anecdotes, this book shows how Montauban families in varying social classes adapted their financial strategies to cope with rapidly shifting circumstances, often creating solutions not envisioned by the legislators. With family history as its focus, Revolution in the House also provides a detailed social history of Montauban during the French Revolution. Its sources are archival, and its argument rests upon a statistical study of the making and unmaking of family fortunes across several generations. Darrow shows that in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the transmission of wealth expressed a way of life--on the social, political, religious, and economic levels--not only at the top of society but throughout the entire social order. Originally published in 1990. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of dictionaries on the contemporary milieu of the world's most important countries. The Contemporary Country Dictionary series are not tourist guides--though tourists with a serious interest in countries they are visiting will find them of great help in learning more about these societies. These alphabetical reference guides have been compiled to give up-to-date information on all aspects of each country--explanations of terms that are outside the scope of a standard dictionary or encyclopedia--including acronyms, political and legal institutions, cultural phenomena, social welfare programs, industrial concerns, media, literary and political personalities, and much more. Each Dictionary has been compiled by two people--a native of the individual country and an English-speaking collaborator from either Great Britain or the United States. Readers are thus assured of authoritative information that is rendered in terms comprehensible to English-language readers. The Dictionaries will prove invaluable to researchers, librarians, and students.
