Book Synopsis Death in the Long Grass by : Peter Hathaway Capstick
Download or read book Death in the Long Grass written by Peter Hathaway Capstick and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 1978-01-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters. Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it—leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer. Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grassportrays the great killers of the African bush—not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world—underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog. Readers can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.
Book Synopsis “The Sting of Death” and Other Stories by : Toshio Shimao
Download or read book “The Sting of Death” and Other Stories written by Toshio Shimao and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until a recent “boom,” Shimao Toshio, writer of short fiction, critic, and essayist, was not widely known, even in Japan. He has never won the Akutagawa or the Naoki Prize, and none of his works had previously appeared in English translation. He is less well known than other writers (Yasuoka Shotaro, Kojima Nobuo, and Shono Junzo) with whom he has associated and whose works have been liberally translated into English. Yet, there are those who consider him to be one of the best contemporary writers in Japan. This volume by no means exhausts the scope of Shimao's fiction. There are no stories here, for instance, about childhood or student life, and none of his many travel stories. Some of his most famous stories-- "When we Never Left Port," for example--have not been included. But the stories presented here do offer a considerable variety of style, from the pristine storybook language of "The Farthest Edge of the Islands," to the young intellectual's jargon of "Everyday Life in a Dream," to the visionary, hysterical, occasionally ritualistic prose of the "sick wife" stories, to the sober, difficult, almost ponderous narration of "This Time That Summer." Shimao's approach to his material varies as well. "Everyday Life in a Dream" is the only representative here of a large number of stories usually called surrealistic by the critics, stories whose plots progress by the logic of dreams. The individual experience of real life are lived through a combination of conscious and unconscious perception. These stories are the least approachable and the least charming to the casual reader, but they serve, among other things, to highlight patterns in the more realistic fiction. "The Farthest Edge of the Islands" is a symbolic heightening of reality in another way, a romantic fairy tale beginning at the extremity of experience, at the farthest edge of the world. The other stories are presented as precise, close chronicles of reality by a participant in that reality whose attention never waivers and who never allows himself to avert his eyes from a world that he sees as his responsibility and in a sense his fault. All but the first story, "The Farthest Edge of the Islands," which is in third-person narration, are told in the first person by the character who plays Shimao's role in the life that inspired the fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These stories will last," said Raymond Carver of Shiloh and Other Stories when it was first published, and almost two decades later this stunning fiction debut and winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award has become a modern American classic. In Shiloh, Bobbie Ann Mason introduces us to her western Kentucky people and the lives they forge for themselves amid the ups and downs of contemporary American life, and she poignantly captures the growing pains of the New South in the lives of her characters as they come to terms with feminism, R-rated movies, and video games. "Bobbie Ann Mason is one of those rare writers who, by concentrating their attention on a few square miles of native turf, are able to open up new and surprisingly wide worlds for the delighted reader," said Robert Towers in The New York Review of Books.

Book Synopsis Kangchenjunga and Other Stories by : Robert Halsey
Download or read book Kangchenjunga and Other Stories written by Robert Halsey and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Halsey is an active member of a creative writing group called Tapestry that operates out of the Cockburnshire Library in Spearwood, Western Australia. Kangchenjunga and Other Stories is a collection of insights derived mainly from the troubled world in which he lives in, but some have been inspired from real personal experiences and some from history. Kangchenjunga is his imprimatur derived from a real spiritual experience that was born out of talking to young German backpackers in Darjeeling and immersing their experiences in cultural and folkloric material of the tribal people from Nepal and Bhutan. Out of the rich amalgam comes a searing tragedy that will haunt the reader for a long time to come. Man is mortal. We live a short time and then pass on. The world we leave behind remains as cold and indifferent. We leave our stories as testaments to our miserable achievements or lack of achievements, We should be grateful if the stories we leave behind in the insubstantial pages of literature, or history, can offer someone somewhere an insight or some moments of satisfaction having decoded the messages held in stories, poems, and dramas. Such are the delights offered in stories like Adam, Send for Eliab, Through Fire and Brimstone, Cleansing the Land, Lamp Shades and Cushion Covers, and When the God of Death Is the Death of God. Some readers may find some stories distressing, but the poetry that emanates from them tries to compensate for the harsh reality of a heartless and cold world that is indifferent to the stories that derive from our lives we are driven to leading. These stories are like the metaphors of life we leave narrated in and left to time. It is you, the reader, that will give them a measure of immortality as you keep reading, making the stories of these sad victims your own. Live again, but in another dimensionyour own and these others.
Book Synopsis Villa Rubein and Other Stories by : John Galsworthy
Download or read book Villa Rubein and Other Stories written by John Galsworthy and published by 谷月社. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing not long ago to my oldest literary friend, I expressed in a moment of heedless sentiment the wish that we might have again one of our talks of long-past days, over the purposes and methods of our art. And my friend, wiser than I, as he has always been, replied with this doubting phrase"Could we recapture the zest of that old time?" I would not like to believe that our faith in the value of imaginative art has diminished, that we think it less worth while to struggle for glimpses of truth and for the words which may pass them on to other eyes; or that we can no longer discern the star we tried to follow; but I do fear, with him, that half a lifetime of endeavour has dulled the exuberance which kept one up till morning discussing the ways and means of aesthetic achievement. We have discovered, perhaps with a certain finality, that by no talk can a writer add a cubit to his stature, or change the temperament which moulds and colours the vision of life he sets before the few who will pause to look at it. And so—the rest is silence, and what of work we may still do will be done in that dogged muteness which is the lot of advancing years. Other times, other men and modes, but not other truth. Truth, though essentially relative, like Einstein's theory, will never lose its ever-new and unique quality-perfect proportion; for Truth, to the human consciousness at least, is but that vitally just relation of part to whole which is the very condition of life itself. And the task before the imaginative writer, whether at the end of the last century or all these aeons later, is the presentation of a vision which to eye and ear and mind has the implicit proportions of Truth.
