Book excerpt: Ethan is a directionless twenty-something who has finally cast off the heartbreaking responsibilities of his broken boyhood home, but not without irreversible scars and sarcasm. After surviving a tragic accident, he begins to suspect he may actually have something to live for. Is it a hidden purpose? His new beginning? Finding a decent cup of coffee? The answer is unclear, until one morning a familiar stranger appears. The poorly dressed man at Ethan's door seems to have all the answers. But with those answers comes a grave proposition. Witty and realistically sarcastic; full of self-redemption and the dark, cosmic inner-workings of life and death. Comically sharp yet lighthearted, Death Dresses Poorly is the bittersweet tale of a young man's journey through the discarded baggage of his childhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Bury Our Dead Well By: Rachael Webb The very element that binds us to humanity is being used to divide us. Our emotions do not make us unique; they make us human. It is how you got there and what you do once you leave the particular events of your life, this is where your uniqueness comes from. Let's start loving our living with a cup of grace and the emotional bonds of humanity. Follow two public servants who leave it all on the field to help others only to be left destitute and in peril due to the actions of others. Discover how important a support network is as you embrace individuals in a parallel world and discover how we as individuals help to kill each other every day in our actions and our words. In a world where materialist items are valued over human life, let's come back to humanity and start taking care of each other. Validation is your only requirement. It is not for you to judge "good or bad." Let's see each other for the possibility, not the trials that we are currently facing alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, more than a million people die by suicide each year. Yet many of us know very little about a tragedy that may strike our own loved onesÑand much of what we think we know is wrong. This clear and powerful book dismantles myth after myth to bring compassionate and accurate understanding of a massive international killer. Drawing on a fascinating array of clinical cases, media reports, literary works, and scientific studies, Thomas Joiner demolishes both moralistic and psychotherapeutic clichŽs. He shows that suicide is not easy, cowardly, vengeful, or selfish. It is not a manifestation of "suppressed rage" or a side effect of medication. Threats of suicide, far from being idle, are often followed by serious attempts. People who are prevented once from killing themselves will not necessarily try again. The risk for suicide, Joiner argues, is partly genetic and is influenced by often agonizing mental disorders. Vulnerability to suicide may be anticipated and treated. Most important, suicide can be prevented. An eminent expert whose own father's death by suicide changed his life, Joiner is relentless in his pursuit of the truth about suicide and deeply sympathetic to such tragic waste of life and the pain it causes those left behind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Swift was the subject of gossip and criticism in his own time concerning his relations with women and his representations of them in his writings. For over twenty years he regarded Esther Johnson, "Stella," as "his most valuable friend," yet he is reputed never to have seen her alone. From his time to our own there has been speculation that the two were secretly married--since their relationship seemed so inexplicable then and now. For thirteen of the years that Swift seemed committed to Stella as the acknowledged woman in his life, he maintained a clandestine--but apparently also nonsexual--relationship with another woman, Esther Van Homrigh, or "Vanessa." Jonathan Swift in the Company of Women looks again at these much-examined relationships and at others that reveal Swift as a man who enjoyed the company of a number of women as pupils and as ministrants to his various needs. Swift, a man with a complex private life, was also a writer whose satiric portraits of women could be unsparing. While Swift often criticized women for frivolous pastimes and idle chatter, his most notorious texts on women image their bodies as loathsome: as he once wrote in a serious political tract, a woman is a "nauseous, unwholesome carcass." Such representations cross a line by showing a repugnance for women as a sex, the biological other. They have led, not surprisingly, to repeated charges of misogyny, an issue that Jonathan Swift in the Company of Women addresses at some length. This first book-length treatment of Swift and women comprehensively examines Swift's attitude toward women in all their manifestations in his work and life: as intimates, acquaintances, protégés, wives, mothers, nurses, disobedient daughters, young women who marry older men, and--finally--as poets and critics.

Book excerpt: This landmark book presents prayer in all its richness and variety throughout history, across traditions, and around the globe. Focusing on extraordinary stories of lives changed by prayer and on great works of literature and art inspired by it, Carol and Philip Zaleski map the vast world of prayer from the sacred pipe to the rosary, from Neanderthal funerals to Pentecostal revivals. Examining prayer as petition, thanksgiving, adoration, contemplation, ecstasy, magic, and sacrifice, the Zaleskis probe the language of prayer, the fruits of prayer, its controversies, and its prospects for the future.Prayer is an informative, accessible, and entertaining narrative that will appeal to an audience of all faiths. Doing for the subject of prayer what Jack Miles did for God and Kathleen Norris for the world of monks, the Zaleskis have created a work that will be the standard for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title casts light on what have heretofore been the phenomenological shadows of 'Cartesian rationality.' In doing so, it discovers dynamic signs of spectral alterity lodged both at the core and on the edges of modern Cartesian subjectivity. Calling for a Copernican reorientation of the very notion 'Cartesianism, ' the book's series of close, creatively critical readings of Descartes' signature images brings the dramatic forces, moments, and scenes of the cogito into our own contemporary moment.
