Book excerpt: Scholarly essays on the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South Looking back at her lengthy career just four years before her death, modernist painter Nell Blaine said, "Art is central to my life. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South. Spanning the decades between the late 1890s and early 1960s, this volume examines the complex challenges these artists faced in a traditionally conservative region during a period in which women's social, cultural, and political roles were being redefined and reinterpreted. The presentation—and its companion exhibition—features artists from all of the Southern states, including Dusti Bongé, Anne Goldthwaite, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Ida Kohlmeyer, Loïs Mailou Jones, Alma Thomas, and Helen Turner. These essays examine how the variables of historical gender norms, educational barriers, race, regionalism, sisterhood, suffrage, and modernism mitigated and motivated these women who were seeking expression on canvas or in clay. Whether working from studio space, in spare rooms at home, or on the world stage, these artists made remarkable contributions to the art world while fostering future generations of artists through instruction, incorporating new aesthetics into the fine arts, and challenging the status quo. Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provides a foreword to the volume. Contributors: Sara C. Book excerpt: This fabulous work is a county-by-county guide to the genealogical records and resources at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville. Based largely on the Tennessee county records microfilmed by the LDS Genealogical Library, it is an inventory of extant county records and their dates of coverage. For each county the following data is given: formation, county seat, names and addresses of libraries and genealogical societies, published records (alphabetical by author), W.P.A. typescript records, microfilmed records (LDS), manuscripts, and church records. The LDS microfilm covers almost every record that could be used by the genealogist, from vital records to optometry registers, from wills and inventories to school board minutes. There also is a comprehensive list of statewide reference works.

Book excerpt: Just as he did for the 29 counties of East Tennessee and the 19 counties of West Tennessee, Dr. Alan Miller has sifted through the apprenticeship records of Middle Tennessee and brought them within the reach of the genealogy researcher. This second volume of Tennessee's "forgotten children" contains some 7,000 apprenticeship records scattered among the minutes of the county courts for Middle Tennessee. These records span the period from 1784 to 1902 and list in tabular form the apprenticeships created in the following 35 Tennessee counties: Bedford, Cannon, Cheatham, Clay, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Dickson, Franklin, Giles, Grundy, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Moore, Overton, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Van Buren, Warren, Wayne, White, Williamson, and Wilson.

It documents over 41,500 entries covering all 62 counties for which antebellum estate records have survived. It is arranged by surname, so the entire list of wills of any given family in the state can be found under one heading. With few exceptions, the names in the index were taken from microfilmed copies of the original county records.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phillips Family History: A Brief History of the Phillips Family, Beginning With the Emigration From Wales, and a Detailed Genealogy of the Descendants of John and Benjamin Philips, Pioneer Citizens of Wilson County, Tenn It was in Wales, rugged little province of the British Isles, that Joseph Philips was born and reared. A good place to grow men is Wales. On her barren hillsides and in her secluded valleys, a brave and hardy race has lived since a day earlier than the history of man is recorded; a race of tenacious people, thrifty, sturdy and industrious. Book excerpt: The PEOPLE'S HOSPITAL: A History of Cookeville Regional Medical Center, 1950-2010. From dramatic life-saving medical advances to the rise of health care as one of the nation's largest industries, the transformation in medicine over the past 60 years has been nothing short of a revolution. How the people of Cookeville, Tennessee, helped their local hospital navigate the often-stormy political and financial waters of change in health care is a story as full of intrigue, suspense, heartache and joy as the history of any human endeavor. The People's Hospital: A History of Cookeville Regional Medical Center, 1950-2010 traces the origins of Cookeville's public hospital, which began as a 15-bed private clinic built by a local surgeon just off the town square in 1921, to its status as regional referral medical center 60 years later. Bought by the city in 1927, the hospital was supervised by head nurses until 1950, when the city built its replacement on the west side of town. Five physicians and 33 nurses and staff members cared for the patients admitted to the new hospital in its first year; by 2010, the staff had grown to 1,800, with more than 140 active physicians.Telling the story of a hospital is a rare form of local history, and yet hospitals play a huge role in the life of any community. That's especially true when the hospital is public, because its origins and fate are inextricably tied to the well-being of the town or county that owns it. The People's Hospital illustrates how the business of saving lives transformed a modest public hospital into a regional medical center, becoming an investment for the well-being and prosperity of the people who own it.
