Book Synopsis “Dear Institute...” by : Himanshu Agrawal
Download or read book “Dear Institute...” written by Himanshu Agrawal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of commentaries by 40 psychoanalysts-in-training spanning across 29 different countries, shedding light on the state of contemporary psychoanalysis – its training, practice and relevance. The perception and landscape of typical psychoanalysis, the typical psychoanalyst and the typical psychoanalytic trainee have witnessed a tectonic shift since Dr. Sigmund Freud first introduced this technique over a hundred years ago. This book challenges and inspires us to think, at all levels, about reimagining how psychoanalysis should be taught in the 21st century. Inspired by Fred Busch’s Dear Candidate (Routledge, 2021), chapters are written in the style of personal letters from candidates to their faculty and institutes. Each contributor shares a piece of their mind – and their heart – about the trials and tribulations of the process of psychoanalytic training – what they cherished, what they loathed, why they spoke up and why they dropped out. This book is an important read for both prospective candidates as well as veteran psychoanalysts and institutional leaders.
Download or read book Dear Denise written by Lisa McNair and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poignant, honest, and heartfelt letters to a sister who perished in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing Lisa McNair was born in 1964, one year after her older sister, Denise, was murdered in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Dear Denise is a collection of forty letters from Lisa addressed to the sister she never knew, but in whose shadow of sacrifice and lost youth she was raised. These letters offer an intimate look into the life of a family touched by one of the most heinous tragedies of the Civil Rights Movement. Written in a genuine, accessible, familiar, and easy-to-read voice, Lisa’s letters apprise her late sister of all that has come to pass in the years since her death. Lisa considers her own challenges and accomplishments as a student in remarkably different—and very racially complex—schools; the birth of their baby sister, Kim; their father’s election to the Alabama legislature; her evolving sense of faith and place, and sometimes lack thereof, within the Black church; her college experiences; and her own sense of self as she’s matured into adulthood. She reveals some of the family’s difficulties and health challenges, and shares some of their joys and celebrations. The letters are accompanied by 29 black-and-white photographs, most of them from the McNair family collection, many of them taken by her father, a professional photographer who documented the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama both before and after Denise’s murder. An unswervingly candid, gentle, and nuanced book, Dear Denise is a testament to one singular life lived bravely and truthfully (if sometimes confusedly or awkwardly), during decades of bewildering social change and in the shadow of one life never fully lived.
Download or read book Dear Bill Bryson written by Ben Aitken and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE ACCLAIMED THE GRAN TOUR AND THE MARMALADE DIARIES An irreverent homage to the '95 travel classic. 'It would be wrong to view this book as just a highly accomplished homage to a personal hero. Aitken's politics, as much as his humour, are firmly in the spotlight, and Dear Bill Bryson achieves more than its title (possibly even its author) intended.' Manchester Review In 2013, travel writer Ben Aitken decided to follow in the footsteps of his hero - literally - and started a journey around the UK, tracing the trip taken by Bill Bryson in his classic tribute to the British Isles, Notes from a Small Island. Staying at the same hotels, ordering the same food, and even spending the same amount of time in the bath, Aitken's homage - updated and with a new preface for 2022 - is filled with wit, insight and humour.
Download or read book Dear Uncles written by Rick Barram and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Uncles is one young man's story from the beginning of the American Civil War. Taken from letters sent home to family and friends, including correspondence written for his uncles' local newspaper, this book gives an intimate portrait of Arthur McKinstry's journey from a small town in upstate New York to confront Confederate forces in Virginia. Articulate, confident, and observant, McKinstry's letters are written with a journalist's eye and poet's heart, giving us a vivid, humorous, and ultimately heartbreaking view into his experiences of going to war. Whether slogging through rain and mud, waiting for care packages from home, or watching cannonballs land in camp, these dispatches place readers in a young soldier's boots and help them to imagine how family and friends experienced this crisis in American history. Dear Uncles also offers new insights into regimental organization, training, and the often-overlooked attempt of Confederates to blockade Washington, DC's Potomac River supply route. Dear Uncles will fascinate and entertain readers with an interest in American Civil War history.
Download or read book My Dear Holmes written by Gavin Brend and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1951, My Dear Holmes is a biography of Sherlock Holmes, which originated from the author’s re-reading of the Sherlock Holmes stories to his daughter, supplies answers to mysteries such as when was Holmes born? Which was his university? How many times was Watson married and in what years? Why did he leave Baker Street without a word of explanation in 1896? Why did the two Moriarty brothers have the same Christian name? Why were there apparently different cases all known as "the Second Stain"? The author takes the sixty cases narrated by Watson, many of which are undated, deduces the year in each case, and weaves the whole into a single continuous story, with the intention of filling the gaps in our knowledge of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. To those who are partial to the London of gaslight, hansom cabs, feather boas and income tax at one shilling and twopence in the pound, this book can be recommended.
Book Synopsis Dear Regina by : Monica Carol Miller
Download or read book Dear Regina written by Monica Carol Miller and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Regina offers a remarkable window into the early years of one of America’s best-known literary figures. While at the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop from 1945 to 1948, Flannery O’Connor wrote to her mother Regina Cline O’Connor (who she addressed by her first name) nearly every day and sometimes more than once a day. The complete correspondence of more than six hundred letters is housed at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory University. From that number, Miller selects 486 letters to show us a young adult learning to adjust to life on her own for the first time. In these letters, O’Connor shares details about living in a boardinghouse and subsisting on canned food and hot-plate dinners, and she asks for advice about a wide range of topics, including how to assuage her relatives’ concerns about her well-being and how to buy whiskey to use for cough medicine. These letters, which are being published for the first time with the unprecedented permission of the Mary Flannery O’Connor Charitable Trust, also off er readers important insights into O’Connor’s intellectually formative years, when her ideas about writing, race, class, and interpersonal relationships were developing and changing. Her preoccupation with money, employment, and other practical matters reveals a side of O’Connor that we do not often see in her previously published letters. Most importantly, the letters show us her relationship with her mother in a much more intimate, positive light than we have seen before. The importance of this aspect of the letters cannot be overstated, given that so much literary analysis conflates her and Regina with the “sour, deformed daughters and self-righteous mothers” that critic Louise Westling sees so often in O’Connor’s work.
