Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Liz Macintyre's mother died she found a collection of 300 letters from her father Alex, spanning his service in Italy and Egypt in the Second World War. His career began in 1940 sailing down the west coast of Africa, then up to Egypt, and the next few years were spent chasing Rommel and the Afrika Corps all over North Africa. By 1943 he was in mainland Italy, where he spent the rest of the war. Beautifully written, Alex's letters offer an intimate account of war from a regular 'desert rat' and cover such daily matters as football, insects and sandstorms alongside accounts of survival in the Italian mountains, escape during the retreat at Tobruk, and leave in Cairo and Palestine. Nan wrote as many letters to Alex as he wrote to her, but he had a ritual of burning the letters as he went so that he would not have to carry them with him and sadly none have survived. However, Alex's letters often answer her questions point by point so the reader can easily envisage Nan's feelings as well as following Alex's personal account of war.

Book excerpt: An inspiring memoir of life, love, loss, and new beginnings by the widower of bestselling children’s author and filmmaker Amy Krouse Rosenthal, whose last of act of love before her death was setting the stage for her husband’s life without her in the viral New York Times Modern Love column, “You May Want to Marry My Husband.” On March 3, 2017, Amy Krouse Rosenthal penned an op-ed piece for the New York Times’ “Modern Love” column —”You May Want to Marry My Husband.” It appeared ten days before her death from ovarian cancer. A heartbreaking, wry, brutally honest, and creative play on a personal ad—in which a dying wife encouraged her husband to go on and find happiness after her demise—the column quickly went viral, reaching more than five million people worldwide. In My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me, Jason describes what came next: his commitment to respecting Amy’s wish, even as he struggled with her loss. Surveying his life before, with, and after Amy, Jason ruminates on love, the pain of watching a loved one suffer, and what it means to heal—how he and their three children, despite their profound sorrow, went on. Jason’s emotional journey offers insights on dying and death and the excruciating pain of losing a soulmate, and illuminates the lessons he learned. As he reflects on Amy’s gift to him—a fresh start to fill his empty space with a new story—Jason describes how he continues to honor Amy’s life and her last wish, and how he seeks to appreciate every day and live in the moment while trying to help others coping with loss. My Wife Said You May Want to Marry Me is the poignant, unreserved, and inspiring story of a great love, the aftermath of a marriage ended too soon, and how a surviving partner eventually found a new perspective on life’s joys in the wake of tremendous loss.

Book excerpt: While Joseph Dobbs Bishop was serving in Louisiana with the 23rd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, he wrote letters ceaselessly to his wife and children. In several ways, his correspondence is typical of Civil War soldiers—he sends news of his comrades, he mentions his duties (he was a musician as well as an infantryman), he observes the landscape, complains about weather, illness, boredom, and homesickness, and longs for more letters from his wife. But Bishop’s letters go beyond typical to remarkable. He shows conflicting feelings about the war as time passes, he expresses startling opinions about slavery and emancipation, and above all, he fills his pages with passion for his spouse. Indeed, his correspondence goes beyond romantic, such that it might even be called erotic and hence a complete surprise to the modern audience. Bishop’s letters are tragic too, so there is a complete range of emotions to appreciate here. In short, the war is not the point of these soldier’s letters; their point is the soldier’s heart.

Book excerpt: On the day that Lincoln was inaugurated in 1861, twenty-seven-year-old William Dorsey Pender, en route to the provisional Confederate capital in Montgomery, Alabama, hurriedly scribbled a note to his wife, Fanny. So began a prolific correspondence between a rising Confederate officer and his cherished wife that would last until Pender was mortally wounded at Gettysburg. First published by UNC Press in 1965, Pender's letters are filled with personal details, colorful descriptions, and candid opinions of such important figures as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J. E. B. Stuart, and A. P. Hill. His comments on his military activities and aspirations and the challenges of command, combined with his husbandly advice and affection, sketch an intimate and unvarnished portrait of the man who was perhaps the most distinguished North Carolina commander.

Before radio, television, and autos, they carried on their romance separated by 100 miles, a full day's round trip by train and not manageable by buggy or horseback. Times and love were fraught with danger. They faced deadly plagues, putrid water systems, horrific accidents, violence, murders, and vicious political turmoil that included the assassinations of Kentucky Governor William Goebel and U.S. President William McKinley. Women had no vote, few rights, and were blocked from many occupations. Men were expected to be sole financial providers, reliably smart, brave and stable. Life's choices thwarted dreams as both yearned for a bit or sweetness to make life bearable. About the only reliable things they had were local daily newspapers and US Postal Service mail delivery 365 days a year (366 in leap years), including Sundays and holidays. Their letters engendered curiosity & this book.

Book excerpt: Dear Nell: The True Story of the Haven Sisters (www.havensisters.com) is the story of two sisters from New York City, one of whom (Ellen, or Nell) marries into a prominent plantation family in Louisiana just prior to the Civil War. As such, Ellen is transported into a different culture and a different world - a world that will soon be blown apart by this country's worst maelstrom. Seen through the intimacy of a remarkable personal correspondence (selected from over 1400 letters ), a story unfolds which reveals the effects of the Civil War on each of them - and on their two families now separated by an unbridgeable gulf. Through it all, the two sisters remain loyal to their sibling tie, despite arduous struggles, grievous misunderstandings and tests of faith. Fanny and Ellen's personal histories, articulated with astonishing intelligence and perspective, stand for a much broader account of our country's travails during that time of unprecedented challenge. The ability to articulate and communicate nuance using the written word is a lost art and may be both novel for, and a marvel to, today's readers. The effects of the Civil War on the families, their livelihoods, and, in the South, on their very identity, come alive in their words. Punctuated by details small and large, by humor, love, harsh economic realities, women's roles, and by the anguish caused by death, poverty and mental illness, this is a rare glimpse into a past (but ever present) time.

Book excerpt: Since the winter of 1971 when my father and my brothers sued Keith, resulting in their paying him $91,839.60 for his stock, I have attempted to discover what would end the lasting conflict between the Harrison family and the Simms family. I have assumed, as do most Americans, that all problems have a solution, that the Harrisons and the Simmses would once again become one happy family. Yet, more than thirty years later, the solution has not been revealed. Therefore, as I am now nearing the last stage of my life, I have decided to adopt a different attitude. I shall settle for an examination of the past in order to determine the causes and to banish from my mind the achievement of a reunion between our families. Soon most of us who have been involved in the conflict will be with God in Heaven, and those left on earth will neither know, nor care. Thus, with the writing of this book, I shall hopefully gain peace, contentment and acceptance for life as it exists, rather than life as it were before the suit.

Book excerpt: A finalist for the 2022 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction A finalist for the 2022 PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel Introducing an extraordinary and original writer whose first novel explores the intersections of grief and rage, personal strength and healing--and what we owe one another. Fern seeks refuge from her mother’s pill-popping and boyfriends via Soul Train; Gwin finds salvation in the music of Prince much to her congregation’s dismay and Jesenia, miles ahead of her classmates at her gifted and talented high school, is a brainy and precocious enigma. None of this matters to Boss Man, the monster who abducts them and holds them captive in a dilapidated house in Queens. On the night they are finally rescued, throngs line the block gawking and claiming ignorance. Among them is lifetime resident Miss Metropolitan, advice columnist for the local weekly, but how could anyone who fancies herself a “newspaperwoman” have missed a horror story unfolding right across the street? And why is it that only two of the three girls—now women—were found? The mystery haunts the two remaining “victim girls” who are subjected to the further trauma of becoming symbols as they continuously adapt to their present and their unrelenting past. Like Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys, Ferrell’s Dear Miss Metropolitan gives voice to characters surviving unimaginable tragedy. The story is inventively revealed before, during, and after the ordeal in this singular and urgent novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book blends two first-hand accounts of life in the Union Army during the opening years of the Civil War. Chandler B. Gillam wrote his wife faithfully during the two years that he was in the 28th New York Volunteers. His letters described the regiments food and housing and discussed generals and politics. He yearned for his home and worried about his farm. W. L. Hicks kept a diary which he entitled , History of the 28th New York Volunteers. His manuscript was found amid the hundred letters in the Gillam collection. Hicks recorded the regiments organization, activities, and leadership changes, and told stories about military life. Gillam and Hicks were among the first to enlist when President Lincoln called for volunteers after South Carolina fired on Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861. They and almost 800 other men from Western New York were formed into the 28th New York Volunteers. Like most volunteers, they were eager to fight to suppress the rebellion and save the Union. They did not think the war would last long. After a month in training, the regiment moved to Washington, D.C., where it paraded before President Lincoln on July 4th. It then marched to Martinsburg and areas near Harpers Ferry. Placed in a division under General Robert Patterson, the men expected to march forward to Winchester and prevent the Confederacy from reinforcing southern forces in Manassas. Instead, Patterson marched his division back to Charlestown. When the Union lost the first battle of Bull Run, morale sank, and Gillam wrote on August 6, 1861, that if all the Gens. do as Patterson did, the war will last a good while. The waiting for action continued through the fall, although grumbling decreased after Maj. General Nathaniel Banks replaced Patterson in command. On October 21 the regiment marched to Edwards Ferry where they saw the sad results of the Union loss at Balls Bluff. Gillam wrote on October 23, Our men will not show much mercy when they go into battle which will come off this week. His hopes for action were again disappointed. By the beginning of 1862 it was clear that Stonewall Jackson would be the main challenge of the 28th New York. In April 1862 Company I of the 28th participated when Jackson attacked General James Shields in a battle for Winchester. Gillam wrote the rest of the 28th was not involved in that battle but they took part in the chase. After Shields Division withdrew, Banks men were the only Union forces left in the Shenandoah Valley, while Jacksons forces were reinforced. On May 25, the Confederate forces attacked the right wing of Banks Division. Although the left flank where the 28th was fighting was holding its own, its leader, Colonel Dudley Donnelly, received orders to retire. The 28th was the last regiment to leave the field. Gillam and Hicks wrote of Winchester citizens adding to the Confederate shelling by firing from their windows. Winchester continued to change hands and by June 7 the 28th New York was back in Winchester. Gillam wrote of the May 25 fight, Well, I have had a chance to be in one fight. I tell you the shells and solid shot dont sound very nice whistling over a persons head and the bullets flying round his head; it is not very nice music. The regiments second battle in Virginia was at Cedar Mountain. In July 1862 General Banks forces moved toward Warrenton, and Confederate forces under Jackson sought to cut them off. The First Brigade moved toward Cedar Mountain and Banks sent orders to hold the position. When the rest of the corps arrived on August 9, the First Brigade was ordered into the woods facing a cleared wheat field. Across the field was another woods where the Confederates had artillery. The First Brigade advanced through artillery fire and hand to hand combat and captured two cannon. Confeder
