Book excerpt: When Samantha (Sam) convinces herself that God has completely abandoned her family after her husband's sudden death, she buries herself in distraction and resentment. Her constant worries dominate her heart and make room for very little else. Even with two sons, her apathetic attitude toward life increases. But Sam is caught completely off guard when God introduces two exceptional people and one rather unique challenge into her chaotic world. Dear Whoever you are, is the record of a woman dealing with not only the loss of her husband but also her faith. More importantly, this book is a testimony of the two faithful servants who help her find God again.
Book Synopsis Today Means Amen by : Sierra DeMulder
Download or read book Today Means Amen written by Sierra DeMulder and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear you: Whoever you are, However you got here, This is exactly where you are supposed to be. This moment has waited its whole life for you. These are the opening lines of "Today Means Amen," YouTube star Sierra deMulder’s immensely powerful and virally popular poem, which lends its title to this collection. Like her fellow Millennial poets Tyler Knot Gregson, Clementine von Radics, and Lang Leav, Sierra has the gift of speaking directly to the reader. “Today Means Amen” has become an anthem of sorts to thousands, who find themselves reflected in its pain, its fierceness, its tenderness — but also in its triumphant culminating refrain: You made it You made it You made it Here. The poems in Sierra's new book explore the rocky terrains of love, family, and womanhood with this same remarkable honesty and generosity. Today Means Amen brings this important young poet's work to an even broader audience.
Download or read book Dear Toni written by Cyndi Sand-Eveland and published by Tundra Books. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When sixth-grader Gene Tucks moves south, she dreads being the new kid at school and almost everything else about her life as a “nobody.” But what she dreads most is the hundred-day journal-writing assignment her teacher has given the class. His brilliant idea is to have the journals locked in the town museum’s vault for forty years so that future grade-sixers can read them. At first, Gene has trouble writing to someone who isn’t even born yet. But little by little, Dear Nobody becomes Dear Somebody, who evolves into Dear Toni. And bit by bit, Toni, a good listener, becomes a best friend to whom Gene tells everything. And, there’s lots to tell. Gene’s family is in transition to say the least. Her dad is looking for work, they are moving — again, her brother is the bane of her existence, and, more than anything else in the world, Gene wants something she can’t have — a dog. Toni is the first to learn that Gene is moving to a rent-free empty apartment at the back of a gas station, so her dad can manage it. And wonder of wonders, the owner’s dog needs looking after. Not just any dog; a St. Bernard who happens to have three pups. Through Gene’s one hundred entries the whole story unwinds and in the end, just like Toni does forty years later, we have come to know one of the freshest, funniest characters to grace the pages of a book in a very long time. Decorated with doodles by the author, Dear Toni has the look and feel of a journal, but the heart of a special 12 year old. In reprinting Dear Toni by Cyndi Sand-Eveland, we applied the incorrect award designation to its cover. Although the book was on the short list, it was not the winner of the 2009-2010 Hackmatack Award. The winning English Fiction title was Dog Lost by Ingrid Lee (Scholastic). We regret the error and apologize to all concerned.

On the pretense of forcing Fallaray to allow Feo to divorce him, Chalfon obtains the letters from Lady Feo and publishes them. Feo burns the original letters in anger, while Lola confesses her love to Fallaray and persuades him to continue in politics rather than ruin his career by marrying her. Fallaray becomes prime minister; Lola returns to her father and trusts to the future for her happiness.
Book Synopsis Resurrection in Mark's Literary-Historical Perspective by : Paul Fullmer
Download or read book Resurrection in Mark's Literary-Historical Perspective written by Paul Fullmer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a careful reading of several ancient texts such as Chariton's Callirhoë, Fullmer identifies an ancient storytelling convention with roots in the Homeric tradition in which narratives of death and revival accentuate significant points in a story. In Mark's Gospel, resurrection narratives accentuate the power of Jesus' ministry (Mark 5:21-43) as well as the ironic disloyalty of Jesus' disciples as their failure is first assured (Mark 9:14-29) and later realized (Mark 16:1-18). The reader of this study will come to appreciate how the irony of the Gospel - a literary feature that is prominent in novelistic literature - is furthered by a novelistic application of the resurrection theme. These observations affirm an identification of the genre of the Gospel as novelistic literature. The study also examines themes of death and revival in texts of the Hebrew Bible, revealing a recurrent constellation of motifs. In these texts, Fullmer convincingly traces a Prophetic resurrection topos with characteristics that are compared to an Epic resurrection topos identified in the Homeric tradition. He then demonstrates how the two topoi merge in later, novelistic texts of Hellenistic Judaism such as the Gospel of Mark, witnessing to a widespread amalgamation of cultures that characterizes the Hellenistic period. This study supports a growing appreciation of the ethnic hybridity of the context that produced Mark's Gospel, contributing to the work of scholars who question an often overdrawn dichotomy between Jewish and Greek culture in the Hellenistic period. Moreover, the significant influence of epic, non-biblical traditions upon the Gospel becomes manifest without an assertion of direct dependence upon Homeric epic. Overall, the study provides a model for the examination of specific themes of the Gospel in light of related ancient literature which enhances modern understanding and appreciation of Mark's story.
