Book excerpt: "A man's relationship with his father: every boy, every man lucky enough to have a father in his life has to figure that out. My own father? I thought I knew him- even though he seldom talked about himself. And what I knew I hated - really, really hated. Cold, ill-tempered, thin-skinned, my father always seemed on the brink of erupting. Scared to death of him, I kept telling myself to find the courage to 'stand up to him.' When I was fifteen, I did. We did not speak to each other for ten years. And then we did- for eight hours. 'Dear Father, Dear Son' takes a journey of American history through the eyes of a father- from his dirt-poor Jim Crow Southern childhood, to the segregated Marine Corps of World War II, to a janitor turned California business man. Hard memories. One man discovered a son he never really knew. And the son found a man, a friend, a father who had really been there all along."--p.[4] of dust jacket.

Kids are constantly changing and how we parent them must change, too. But how do we stay close as a family as our lives move apart? Enter the co-founders of Grown and Flown, Lisa Heffernan and Mary Dell Harrington. In the midst of guiding their own kids through this transition, they launched what has become the largest website and online community for parents of fifteen to twenty-five year olds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God allows brokenness. We learned that God is good and gracious but we live in a broken world. This story deals with a broken home, a broken body and a broken heart. Jesus the Man of Sorrows knew the greatest suffering and loss. Out of all our trials our knowledge and love of God grew deeper. He brought healing and blessing. He never forsakes us but is in fact “near to the brokenhearted.” His grace is amazing and sufficient. We learned we had to be steadfast in our faith through it all. Faith means being faithful in all of our trials because God is in control and has a sovereign plan for each of us. Suffering here is temporary but heaven is forever glorious. There is hope, healing and blessing for the broken.

Book excerpt: The saga of Germany’s “Gone With The Wind” Immerse into the Political, Social, Economic and Religious World of Germany in the late 19th and beginnings of the 20th Centuries. A Time of Grace, Gentility and Achievment in the Arts, Society and in Religious Life. As an American of German ancestry, exposed to the many misconceptions and deliberate lies of the German Character and of German Life, most of the stories told in this book are written from my own Family History. My Great Grandfather was the inspiration in the creation of Maximillian Voss, one of “The Noble Germans” Heroes, and himself a very real Noble German. My intent in telling this story is to encourage everyone to search for the TRUTH in all of life’s encounters, and to DEMAND the TRUTH from everyone, especially those in Governments, Media, in the Halls of Learning and in any and all leadership positions everywhere. A Sequel is expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Devil's Own Dear Son" is Cabell's final philsophical comedy, about a man who discovers that his father was a demon and goes to Hell for a disquieting family reunion. James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) wrote many of the Twentieth Century's finest fantasies, including the controversial Jurgen, which was famously banned by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. It was only after the furor died down that readers and critics were fully able to appreciate that the author was no mere sensationalist, but a literary artist of very high calibre. Cabell was above all else, an elegant stylist, whose gently caustic, beautifully fantasic comedies struck a chord in the Jazz Age and still resonate today. He was an important influence on subsequent writers as diverse as Fritz Leiber and Neil Gaiman. "[He] is a delightful author . . . I like the sheer audacity and the scope [of his work]."" -- Neil Gaiman "One of the all-time greats of fantasy, whose cynical yet romantic view of the human comedy is simultaneously hilarious, beautiful, and melancholy. A writer you must read."" -- Darrell Schweitzer

This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, when the Hudson’s Bay Company sent men to its furthest posts along the coast of North America’s Pacific Northwest, the letters of those who cared for those men followed them in the Company’s supply ships. Sometimes, these letters missed their objects – the men had returned to Britain, or deserted their ships, or died. The Company returned the correspondence to its London office and over the years amassed a file of “undelivered letters.” Many of these remained sealed for 150 years and until they were opened by archivist Judith Hudson Beattie, when the Company archives were moved to Canada. These letters tell the fascinating stories of ordinary people whose lives are rarely recounted in traditional histories. Beattie and Helen M. Buss skilfully introduce us to both the lives of the letter writers and their would-be recipients. Their commentaries frame, for contemporary readers, the words of early nineteenth century working and middle class British folk as well as letters to “voyageurs” from Quebec. The stories of their lives – fathers struggling to support a family, widowed mothers yearning to see their sons, bereft sweethearts left behind, and wives raising their children alone – reach out over two centuries to offer rare insight into the varied worlds of men and women in the early nineteenth century, many of whom became settlers in Washington, Oregon, and the new British colony of Vancouver Island.

Book excerpt: Whether a death is sudden or anticipated, losing a loved one shakes us to our very core, destroying our belief in a just, safe, and predictable world. Grief often changes us quickly both physically and mentally. It is like being kidnapped and suddenly transported to a foreign land without luggage, a passport, or the language to make sense of what's happening. Even if you have a road map for getting through the pain and anguish, you still have to take the trip. The purpose of this book is to help you find threads of hope that will assist your recovery and help you carry on. By sharing inspirational stories, personal experiences, and professional advice from contributors to theOpen to Hope website, we trust that you will be comforted and inspired by learning how others dealt with their losses, what they saw as roadblocks, and how they handled them as well as what it has taken for them to not only survive, but thrive. We want to help you resume leading the life that you were meant to live--a life of satisfaction and one driven by a belief in your own personal power for change.

Book excerpt: Ahead of Peter, miles away from home in a foreign land, lay his toughest challenge yet. In the pursuit of his dreams, he would be driven to the limits of desperation, hunger and endurance. In his eyes, life could not be lived; it had to be survived. Although the generational adage of 'suffering and smiling' prescribed to Nigerians perhaps would represent most of Peter's life, with sheer restless determination, he would wrestle his future into his hands. In his long-awaited sequel to The Unexpected Truth, Oluwafemi Senu, weaves a story where the reader feels his emotional journey from the beginning to end. Written as a testament to less privileged children, his triumphant autobiography underpins the principal ethos that has guided his life: a dream is never achieved by the man who stands still, but the one who tries is at least a step closer.

Book excerpt: Amelia's world shatters on her 18th birthday. Her fiance marches off to fight as a confederate soldier for Virginia in the Civil War. Amelia believes Jeremiah is dead. Year pass. They both create new lives. Jeremiah deserts and eventually marries, moving his family by steamboat up the Missouri River to Montana Territory. Amelia enters the no-women-allowed world of medical school. She graduates as a physician and marries. A deranged patient kills her husband. Filled with grief, Amelia, her sister and a maid, move west. However fate again enters and Amelia finds herself staring into the face of the man she once loved. Will commitments to their new lives be stronger than true love? Forever Friends acquaints you with Amelia, Josie, Sarah Marie, Beulah and Mrs. Mutchnik. Amelia has lost love and must grieve; Beulah fights for her freedom; Josie wants her identity back; Sarah Marie finds more to life than what is in the pages of books, and Mrs. Mutchnik? Well... Lenore McKelvey Puhek has completed three novels writing about pioneer women. "You have taken American history and made it intimate and personal. The individuals come alive, and their strengths and weaknesses are revealed with each page. You make us care about them. We feel both the boredom and the horror of war, the intense heartbreak of first love gone wrong. The satisfaction is of the good turn of events as they take risks and grab at opportunities to bring value to their lives, to live them fully...and to serve others in the process. This is a sacramental story of the everyday sacredness of life. Awesome reading...once I started I could not stop until I reached the end. You are a true storyteller. You have a special gift of "inflection" and character traits...this is so difficult yet you make it look easy." Mary A. Bell, Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator, Helena, MT.
