Book excerpt: As a child who lost her daddy at such a young age, I don't have the pleasure of many memories with the man I thought of as my hero. All I have left of him are some pictures, a handful of memories, and whatever stories others who knew him well have shared with me.I've always desperately wished I had more. When I became a mother, I instantly felt the other side of the story. My whole life I'd only been the child... and now I was the parent. I suddenly knew what it was like to literally wear my heart on my sleeve. To feel not only all of my own fears and emotions, and pain. But, now I've taken on all of hers as well. This switch in perspectives inspired me to give her something I never had. A piece of me she can have and hold, and refer to forever. A way to give her advice and comfort. Whether it be when she's a teenager and too scared to come ask for help or confide in me. Or, when I'm long gone and she's a mommy herself. A way for her to get to know me, know who I am, what is important to me. What I struggled with, what I conquered, what I accomplished. What I failed at, what I hope for her, how much I believe in her. And most importantly, how so very, very much I love her. So, I've written her letters, periodically, since the day she was born. Letters about life, advice, stories, memories, anything I am inspired to write to her about. Something that can not only help her, but hopefully others as well. My hope is you walk away empowered, inspired, and plum full of love and hope, because we all need it.

Download or read book Everything She Thought She Wanted written by Elizabeth Buchan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-04-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Buchan’s beloved bestsellers, Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman and The Good Wife Strikes Back, have made her an icon of upmarket women’s fiction. Taking her characteristic wit and emotional resonance to a new level, her latest novel focuses on two lives separated by forty years of history. In 1959, a forty-something married mother finds herself immersed in a surprisingly passionate affair with a younger man, while in the present, a professional woman faces a daunting choice between her blossoming career and her husband’s desire for children. Mirroring each other in surprising ways, these twin stories offer a deliciously readable funny and moving look at the battle of the sexes across time—and deliver another smart, nuanced novel for Elizabeth Buchan’s growing fans.

Download or read book Dearest Isa written by Robert Browning and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Browning's friendship for Isabella Blagden was almost as remarkable as was his love for Elizabeth Barrett. After Elizabeth's death (June 1861), Browning went to England to educate their son, but he hoped eventually to return to Italy, principally so that he might be near his friend "Isa." He asked her to write to him once a month on the twelfth, promising to answer her letter on the nineteenth. The fulfillment of this obligation resulted in a correspondence which is remarkable from the standpoint of continuity. Most collections of letters suffer from their fragmentary form; there are no continuing threads of interest which hold them together. Not so the letters which Browning wrote to Miss Blagden. They are not in the great English letter writing tradition, being obviously written for Isa rather than for posterity, but they are filled with the most intimate and interesting sort of gossip and informal exchanges of ideas which give them a character all their own. One hundred and fifty-four letters from Browning to Isabella Blagden are known to be in existence; all of them are included in the present volume, together with copious explanatory notes and an illuminating introduction. Edward C. McAleer has approached every detail of his editorial task with thoroughness, imagination, and skill. His notes will add immeasurably to the pleasure of reading the letters, in addition to making a substantial contribution to the world's knowledge of Browning and his associates.
