Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joyce Ann Burke had a family like all others. She found herself at age seven suddenly without any family. Her parents separated in 1942 and divorced (rare for that era). Her mother had custody and left the children alone (abandoned). Joyce Ann was awarded to the court, and they in turn incorporated her into the Hendricks County, Indiana Welfare system. She was a welfare child, no parents, no love and no home. She was a textbook waif. She was placed in the country farm home of a sixty one year old widow lady who owned a 110 acre working dairy farm. You see the picture. She was tiny for seven with snow white blond hair and blue eyes. A total stranger she called Grandma would be her new mother, of sorts. Joyce Ann would be the little running legs for this sixty one year old guardian, and essentially a child servant. The white frame farm house was typical of a 1940's farm home without electricity, plumbing, and central heat. This household was totally self-supporting from the farm. Foods were grown there and preserved for winter. Animals were butchered, cows were milked, hogs were slopped and fields were tended. The days were not programmed for play. Totally unaware, she learned life's lessons, and, although sometimes reluctantly, developed a 'powerful' work ethic. Fourteen years with Grandma produced a young woman who became her own person. It was not easy and decisions she had to make many times were difficult and unfair for a child. Joyce Ann could not afford to make mistakes. Why? She had no one and no where to go. Mistakes were not possible and she knew it. Well, Grandma scared her to death and she walked the walk! Thank you Grandma because Joyce Ann became a woman you would be proud to know today. You will read a very happy ending of the story of Joyce Ann's life, and how she flourished, despite a lonely beginning. She researched her family genealogy with intensity, and found she really did have a family she never shared. In short, she found peace and grateful thanks.

Book excerpt: Fatherly advice from a police officer to his daughter in the lasting form of letters, which provide the kind of sound advice that anyone -- young or old -- can learn from.Demitri Kornegay knew that by the nature of his profession, he risked losing his life every time he went to work. And he started to fear that if he were to die in the line of duty, his young daughter, Rhonda, would never benefit from all of the fatherly advice he wanted to give her.So Demitri started writing letters to Rhonda. Each letter tackles a different subject, offering parental advice about everything from maintaining a loving marriage to dealing with depression to understanding race relations. And while he doesn't hesitate to offer his own opinions, Demitri also suggests that his advice be used as a springboard for discovering one's own life philosophies.Demitri's universal themes offer the type of timeless advice that every father wishes he could impart to his children.

Book excerpt: Full of suspense, riveting, and deeply mesmerizing, Manipulation Unto Death is a fictional melodrama that will at times amuse you and unglue you and will stay in your memory bank forever. Samantha, a pregnant Southern-raised sheltered twelve-year-old, is missing without a trail, hot or cold. Voluminous speculations were made throughout the red hills of Georgia and beyond about this unlawful, horrific, sinful act. The local police and social service departments became involved, both launching full-scale investigations, sparing no resources. Given the intensity of the investigation, one might wonder why the community members of this nondenominational religious sect are deliberately tight-lipped. Sadly, the investigation constantly stalls; the police take a long shot and call in a renowned psychic. Is a resolution required to reexamine the age-old notion that children are to be seen but not heard? Or perhaps is it embedded in societys lack of awareness and acceptance of the wide spectrum of autism disorders?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and riveting record of both literary and social value. Frank Sargeson is one of New Zealand's best-loved and most important writers. Besides the ground-breaking short stories, he wrote memoirs, novels, and plays. He encouraged at least three generations of younger writers and, for most of his adult life, the famous bach behind the hedge at 14 Esmonde Road was at the heart of New Zealand's artistic and literary world. Sargeson was also a prolific letter writer, and this selection of 500 of the most fascinating ranges over half a century, from 1927 to 1981. The letters are immensely readable, vividly capturing his life and times, his milieu and his personality. Frank loved gossip, could be bitchy and peevish, but also kind, affectionate, funny, ribald, astute. This collection, selected, edited and annotated by Sarah Shieff, is a document of extraordinary significance for all those interested in New Zealand's literary and social history.
