Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2 of 3: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation The major no sooner heard the voice than he relinquished Mr. Dombey's arm, darted forward, took the hand Of the lady in the chair, and pressed it to his lips. With no less gallantry the major folded both his gloves upon his heart, and bowed low to the other lady. And now, the chair having stopped, the motive power became visible in the Shape of a flushed page pushing behind, who seemed to have in part outgrown and in part outpushed his strength, for when he stood upright he was tall, and wan, and thin, and his plight appeared the more forlorn from his having injured the shape of his hat, by butting at the carriage with his head to urge it forward, as is sometimes done by elephants in Oriental countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2: Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation The Major, more bluedfaced and staring - more -ripe, as it Were, than ever - and giving vent, every now and then, to one of the horse's coughs, not so much of necessity as in a spbntaheous explosion of importance, walked arm in arm with Mr. Dombey up the sunny side of the way, with'his cheeks veiling over his tight stock, his legs majesticl ally wide apart, and his great head wagging from side to side, as if he were remonstrating within himself on being such a captivating object. They had not walked many yards, before the Major encountered somebody he knew, nor 'many yards farther before the Major encountered somebody else he knew, but he merely shook his fingers at them as he passed, and led Mr. Dombey on pointing out the localities as they went, and enlivening the walls with any current scandal suggested by them. He dreams of passing his business on to his son. Dombey dotes on his son, and neglects and mistreats his daughter. The "son" in the title of the book is incapable of ever joining the firm. A sickly and odd child, Paul dies at the age of six. Dombey pours his resentment and anger out on his daughter, whom he pushes away despite her efforts to earn her father's love.Eventually Dombey remarries, after literally acquiring his new wife from her father in a commercial transaction. Dombey is as bad a husband as he is a father and his marriage is loveless. His new bride hates Dombey and eventually runs off with Canker, his business manager. Dombey characteristically blames Florence for this reversal, and strikes her, causing Florence to run away as well.Abandoned by everyone, Dombey loses his business and goes half insane, living in his decaying house. Dombey is eventually reconciled to his daughter, who always a doormat forgives her father........

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dealings With the Firm of Dombey and Son, Vol. 2 of 2: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation; With the Original Illustrations Dawn, with its passionless blank face, steals shivering to the church beneath which lies the dust of little Paul and his mother, and looks in at the windows. It is cold and dark. Night crouches yet, upon the pavement, and broods, sombre and heavy, in nooks and corners of the building. The steeple clock, perched up above the houses, emerging from beneath another of the countless ripples in the tide of time that regularly roll and break on the eternal shore, is greyly visible, like a stone beacon, recording how the sea flows on; but within doors, dawn, at first, can only peep at night, and see that it is there. Hovering feebly round the church, and looking in, dawn moans and weeps for its short reign, and its tears trickle on the window-glass, and the trees against the church-wall bow their heads, and wring their many hands in sympathy. Night, growing pale before it, gradually fades out of the church, but lingers in the vaults below, and sits upon the coffins. And now comes bright day, burnishing the steeple-clock, and reddening the spire, and drying up the tears of dawn, and stifling its complaining; and the scared dawn, following the night, and chasing it from its last refuge, shrinks into the vaults itself and hides, with a frightened face, among the dead, until night returns, refreshed, to drive it out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul Dombey: From Dombey and Son American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit. His sarcasm and the severity with which in these two books he caricatured the people he met excited indignation among Americans. This feeling gradually passed away, however, and in 1868, upon his second visit, he was cordially received in all the larger cities of the United States. He read selections from his own works, and crowds came to hear him. In England he was universally popular. The queen offered him a title of nobility, but he declined it, saying that he wished to be remembered by no other name than Charles Dickens. He continued to write until the very day of his death, and left unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which promised to be one of his best novels. He died suddenly on the 8th of June, 1870 and the nation paid him homage by burying him in the Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. The only person Dombey cares for is his frail son, grooming him for entry into the family business, while abandoning and ignoring his his daughter Florence, who craves affection from her unloving father. It has been said that the story of Dombey and Son is a refection upon Dicken’s own childhood. Can this heartless businessman be redeemed? The book begins when his son is born, and Dombey's wife dies shortly after giving birth. Following the advice of Mrs Louisa Chick, his sister, Dombey employs a wet nurse named Mrs Richards (Toodle). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new edition, Adeptio's Vintage Edition, of Charles Dickens's Dealings with the firm of Dombey and Son, originally published in 1948 by Bradbury & Evans, of London, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. Part of Adeptio's Unforgettable Classic Series, this is not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Adeptio Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. The eBook edition was designed in an elegant style and set to take full advantage of the readers' devices. Dombey and Son is Dickens's first artistically mature work, and is considered one of Dickens's masterpieces and helped establish Dickens's reputation throughout the world. About the Author: Charles John Huffam Dickens (February 7, 1812-June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He was the second of eight children of Elizabeth Dickens (née Barrow; 1789 1863) and John Dickens (1785-1851). He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Dickens's works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognized him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today. Born in England, in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Still a child, he lived in a back-attic in the house of an agent for the Insolvent Court, Archibald Russell. To pay for his board and to help his family, Dickens was forced to leave school and work ten-hour days at Warren's Blacking Warehouse, on Hungerford Stairs, near the present Charing Cross railway station, where he earned six shillings a week pasting labels on pots of boot blacking. The strenuous and often harsh working conditions made a lasting impression on Dickens and later influenced his fiction and essays, becoming the foundation of his interest in the reform of socio-economic and labor conditions, the rigors of which he believed were unfairly borne by the poor. He later wrote that he wondered "how I could have been so easily cast away at such an age." Dickens has been praised by many of his fellow writers-from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell, G. K. Chesterton, and Tom Wolfe-for his realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterizations, and social criticism. Charles Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of "The Pickwick Papers." Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humor, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, initially published in monthly or weekly installments; this format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback Despite his lack of formal education, Dickens edited a weekly journal for 20 years, published over a dozen major novels and novellas, a large number of short stories- including a number of Christmas-themed stories-a handful of plays, several nonfiction books and articles, lectured, and performed readings extensively between 1836 and 1870. He died on June 9, 1870 in Kent, England. Dickens's impressive works include masterpieces such as A Christmas Carol, Dombey and Son; Christmas Stories; Sketches of Young Couples, Young Ladies, Young Gentlemen; Adventures of Oliver Twist (or, The Parish Boy's Progress), and A Tale of Two Cities (A Story of the French Revolution)-all published by Adeptio Editions.
