This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pre-demolition audit is a tool that can be used to both identify hazardous substances and assess the materials to be removed from the building or infrastructure, and consequently their potential value, prior to the demolition or renovation activity can be established. Audits are essential since they enable all stakeholders involved to get information on the composition of waste and make it easier to find markets for different waste types. It is likely that the European Commission will recommend all Member States to make this pre-demolition audit mandatory to increase high quality recycling of construction and demolition waste. The report presents the current pre-demolition audit systems and existing guidelines in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. The report gives recommendations on key elements to be included in audits for improving the quality of the construction and demolition waste.
Book Synopsis The Handbook to Building a Circular Economy by : David Cheshire
Download or read book The Handbook to Building a Circular Economy written by David Cheshire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a call to arms to all architects, designers and built environment professionals. To avoid a climate catastrophe and achieve a regenerative built environment, the use of new materials and any excess waste in resources need to be cut out from the very beginning of the design process. This requires far-reaching change in established industry processes. How might this begin? What are the key fundamentals you need to know? How can a more effective model be applied? This book, a much-updated second edition of the author’s previous work Building Revolutions, answers all your questions. Inspiring, but never overwhelming, the Handbook to Building a Circular Economy is your must-have companion to helping create a more sustainable future. It explains in simple and practical terms how the principles of a circular economy can be applied to the built environment, thereby reducing the resources required to construct, fit-out, maintain and refurbish buildings. Case studies include: The Forge, UK, by Landsec The Bath School of Art, UK, by Grimshaw Urban Mining and Recycling Experimental Unit, Switzerland, by Werner Sobek NASA Sustainability Base, USA, by William McDonough + Partners University of East Anglia Enterprise Centre, UK, by Architype Park 20|20, The Netherlands, by William McDonough + Partners.
Book Synopsis Building Revolutions by : David Cheshire
Download or read book Building Revolutions written by David Cheshire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry operates within a linear economy of make, use, dispose. Buildings are stripped out and torn down with astonishing regularity while new buildings are constructed from hard-won virgin materials. But raw materials are becoming scarce, and the demands for them are exploiting fragile ecosystems, even as the global demand for resources continues to rise. Policy makers and organisations are beginning to look for a more regenerative, circular economy model. The construction industry demands over half the world’s extracted materials and generates around a third of the total waste generated in the EU, making it a prime candidate for applying the circular economy. Yet there has been little focus on how construction industry professionals and their clients can contribute towards the movement. Drawing on illustrative methods and examples, Building Revolutions explains how the principles of a circular economy can be applied to the built environment where resources are kept in use and their value retained.
Book Synopsis Managing and Minimizing Construction Waste by : J. Ferguson
Download or read book Managing and Minimizing Construction Waste written by J. Ferguson and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1995 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over two billion tonnes of waste are generated in the European Union every year, approximately half of which comes from the construction industry. Increasing pressure on landfill sites, accompanied by escalating prices and a growing awareness of environmental concerns has made the minimization of this waste and ites responsible disposal an absolute necessity. The Environment Protection Act 1990 placed a Duty of Care on every individual involved in the creation, storage, transportation or disposal of waste. This practical guide for everyone involved with the construction industry outlines how to manage waste from construction economically and in accordance with the legal requirements of the Duty of Care. It explains in detail all actions required of the responsible person and offers extremely practical advice on how to minimize the amount of waste produced, thus saving costs and reducing the environmental impact.

Download or read book Construction and Demolition Waste Management Using Zero-Waste Strategy and Green Entrepreneurship written by Ahmed Ibrahim and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: 4.0, The American University in Cairo, language: English, abstract: Sustainable development is considered to be the main solution for various environmental problems facing the world nowadays. In this project, we are going to discuss the definition and importance of sustainability. Moreover, this Project States the condition of C&D (construction and demolition) wastes in Egypt, and their handling. It also explains the concepts of zero waste and green entrepreneurship, and connects these concepts through a variety of integrated case studies. Therefore, we can define a solution to the C&D waste problem in Egypt. The vision of the report that C&D wastes is one from the largest and most hazard wastes in Egypt and up to now Egypt does not appreciate the economic value in these wastes and does not realize their environmental impacts on the people health nor their social impacts on the free lands which are used to be dump sites for these wastes. The report show five case studies aim to reach 100% recycling or zero waste and build green entrepreneurship for C&D waste. This connection between zero waste and build green entrepreneurship will produce comprehensive solution for C&D waste in Egypt to solve the different aspects of this problem and get great economic benefit through this solution.
Book Synopsis End-of-Waste Criteria for Construction & Demolition Waste by : Hjelmar, Ole
Download or read book End-of-Waste Criteria for Construction & Demolition Waste written by Hjelmar, Ole and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the situation within the Nordic countries with respect to production and recycling of construction and demolition waste, in particular crushed concrete, in the form of aggregates, and discusses the conditions and requirements relating to environmental impacts for a possible application of the End-of-Waste option in the Waste Framework Directive. If this option is applied, the material may become a product and it will no longer be regulated by waste legislation. Regulation of crushed concrete under product legislation presents a number of challenges, particularly with respect to environmental protection. The report presents and proposes a methodology for the setting of leaching and risk-based criteria to be fulfilled by crushed concrete (and other waste aggregates) in order to obtain End-of-Waste status. It is further recommended to set impact-reducing conditions on the use of materials obtaining End-of-Waste criteria, and not to allow free use. It should be noted that the work described in this report was carried out during the period from 2010 to 2012.

Download or read book Demolition written by Richard J. Diven and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the built environment ages, demolition has become a rapidly growing industry offering major employment opportunities. During the 1990s the number of contractors grew by nearly 60 percent and there are now over 800 US companies focused on demolition, as well as many more offering this service as part of their portfolio. It has also become an increasingly complex business, requiring a unique combination of project management skills, legal and contractual knowledge, and engineering skills from its practitioners. Created in partnership with the National Demolition Association, Demolition: Practices, Technology, and Management is written specifically with students of construction management and engineering in mind, although it will also be an invaluable reference resource for anyone involved in demolition projects. Since demolition has become such a central part of construction management, this audience includes practicing architects and engineers, general contractors, building and manufacturing facility owners, as well as government officials and regulators. Covered in the book is the full range of technical and management issues encountered by the demolition contractor and those who hire demolition contractors. These include modern demolition practices, the impact of different construction types, demolition regulations, estimating demolition work, demolition contracts, safety on the demolition project, typical demolition equipment, debris handling and recycling, use of explosives, demolition contractors' participation in disaster response, and demolition project management.
