Book excerpt: Welcome to Verona Bay, a small coastal town where the secrets just won’t stay buried—and people aren’t always who they seem. She was the one that got away… Eight years ago Serenity Washington watched as her twin sister was murdered. She was lucky to escape the same grisly fate. With her sister’s killer in jail, she relocated and tried to move on with her life. She married a man in the Air Force and started a family, but when her husband dies unexpectedly she moves back to the last place she remembers being happy—Verona Bay, FL. Now that she’s come home, it’s all starting again… Within months of Serenity’s homecoming, she receives a ‘gift’—a bracelet from her sister that was never recovered after her death—and a taunting note. Terrified for herself and her young daughter, she turns to the local sheriff for help. But there’s only so much they can do without proof that the gifts aren’t more than sick pranks. There’s been no DNA, no fingerprints left behind—nothing to indicate who’s leaving them. As the horrifying gifts arrive with increasing frequency, Serenity has no doubt that she’s the ultimate target. But with her sister’s murderer—a confessed serial killer—still behind bars, she has no idea who’s stalking her. She turns to the one man she’s been trying to keep her distance from… Former Marine Lucas Jordan has been hung up on single mom Serenity since she moved back to Verona Bay, but she’s made it clear she’s not looking for a relationship. When she’s targeted, however, all bets are off. He won’t sit by while she’s terrorized, and with her and her daughter’s lives in danger he’s prepared to stand his ground and protect them both. Together they face the impossible task of trying to figure out who to trust before they all wind up six feet under.

Book excerpt: FIFTEEN CRIME AND MYSTERY STORIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH UNTIL YOU DIE… Humor is often found in unlikely places, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Mystery Writers of America’s latest classic anthology, edited by master raconteur Richard S. Prather. Richard’s only criteria for this collection was that each crime or mystery story had to make the reader laugh, and the writers selected met his challenge and then some. Margaret Manners brings us the tale of a wife turned amateur journalist/sleuth who’s more than a match for a devious murder. From legendary hardboiled author Evan Hunter comes an over-the-top tale of a gumshoe in way over his head, caught up between a deadly damsel and a local mob. Ellery Queen recounts a tale of theft and assault at a university, where a slip of the tongue is enough to catch a thief. And no collection of humorous mystery stories would be complete without one from the master himself, Richard S. Prather, featuring his wisecracking P.I. Shell Scott matching wits with a local mobster who’s framed Scott for that most heinous of crimes…moral turpitude. Fifteen stories ranging from slapstick to parody to black humor, all guaranteed to tickle your funny bone…whether it’s attached to the rest of your body or not… Robert Arthur Stanley Ellin Michael Fessier Jack Finney Erle Stanley Gardner Michael Gilbert Dion Henderson Evan Hunter Veronica Parker Johns Dana Lyon Margaret Manners Berkely Mather William O’Farrell Richard S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of Nabokov's Lolita, Humbert makes an honest admission: "[A]nd it struck me…that I simply did not know a thing about my darling's mind." That line sums up the isolate game of memorializing a deceased loved one, which is the basic tension in Nina's Memento Mori, an elegy to Mathias Freese's lost wife. The profound responsibility of answering the question "Who was Nina?" is left to the lone memoirist: I can say or write anything I want about her…There is much writerly power in that. I am the executor of her probate in all things now. She is mine now in ways she could not be when alive. I am the steward of her memory. Freese ends up analyzing himself, putting the "me" in "memento" and the "i" in "mori," thanks to ever-giving Nina posthumously providing a therapeutic mirror or "Rosebud," which Freese appropriates from Citizen Kane. But Freese mourns more over the burden of existence than over its loss. Appropriately, for Kane is not about the symbolic sled as much as it's about the cumulative snow that buries it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As Christians, we remember our death in order to remember our Life-Jesus Christ. We remember our death in order that our lives may be filled with the Life of Christ, both now and when we enter into the joy of eternal life." (Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP, from the Foreword) Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things is a beautiful prayer book that helps you pray with and meditate on death and the afterlife. Remembrance of the Last Things, beginning with death, opens our hearts to the work God wants to do in us before our last day on earth. Encouraged by Scripture and the saints, this ancient tradition can help you to manage the chaos of this world, grow closer to God, and focus on heaven. Sr. Theresa Alethia Noble, FSP, has taken the ancient custom of memento mori (remembering one's death) and modernized it for the 21st century. In this prayer book she has brought together the prayers, meditations, and readings that are most likely to help us in living our life and preparing for eternity, through the practice of remembering our death. The prayer book includes prayers for a good death, a Memento Mori Examen, Marian prayers for assistance in life and death, Spiritual Warfare prayers, the power of the Holy Rosary, and Prayers to live for heaven, and more. Truly helpful are the prayers that have been included to assist those who are dying and a section of Prayers for the Dead. We often don't know what to do-or say-when someone we care about is dying, or even when we think about our own deaths. Our culture has taught us to pretend death doesn't exist, and as a result we're bereft in more ways than one when we have to confront it. But it doesn't have to be that way. Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things will give you the words you've been looking for, will comfort you and help you comfort others, and will allow you the time to reflect on our nearness to God in these moments. Sr. Theresa Alethia Noble, FSP, has written a Memento Mori devotional, created a Memento Mori journal, and now brings us Memento Mori: Prayers on the Last Things.

Book excerpt: When Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP, began keeping a ceramic skull on her desk and tweeting about it, she had no idea she'd be starting a movement. Her daily tweets about memento mori - Latin for "remember your death" -contained quotes and insights that have inspired others to remember death daily. Many have found this ancient practice to provide an important perspective on their lives in view of Jesus' call to repentance, conversion, and the hope of resurrection. And now Sr. Theresa Aletheia's series of tweets has led to a memento mori -inspired Lenten devotional. Each day contains a reflection written by Sr. Theresa Aletheia based on the liturgy of the day for all of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The devotional also includes a memento mori examen or review of the day, a daily moment of intercessory prayer, and daily reflections on death from the tradition, including the Church Fathers and many of the saints. Prompts are provided for journaling that can be used along with the Remember Your Death: Memento Mori Journal, also available from Pauline Books. Lent is a time when we remember the death of Christ and the sacrifice he made to give us eternal life. This devotional will help you to meditate on your own mortality and the incredible gift of salvation in preparation for Easter. Whether you get a skull for your desk, a memento mori journal, or a Lenten devotional, it is vitally important to the Christian life to remember the fragility of your life on earth-because one day you will die.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how four contemporary artists—Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Robert Gober, and Damien Hirst—pursue the question of death through their fraught appropriations of Christian imagery. Each artist is shown to not only pose provocative theological questions, but also to question the abilities of theological speech to adequately address current attitudes to death. When set within a broader theological context around the thought of death, Bacon’s works invite fresh readings of the New Testament’s narration of the betrayal of Christ, and Beuys’ works can be appreciated for the ways they evoke Resurrection to envision possible futures for Germany in the aftermath of war. Gober’s immaculate sculptures and installations serve to create alternative religious environments, and these places are both evocative of his Roman Catholic upbringing and virtually haunted by the ghosts of his excommunication from that past. Lastly and perhaps most problematically, Hirst has built his brand as an artist from making jokes about death. By opening fresh arenas of dialogue and meaning-making in our society and culture today, the rich humanity of these artworks promises both renewed depths of meaning regarding our exit from this world as well as how we might live well within it for the time that we have. As such, it will be a vital resource for all scholars in Theology, the Visual Arts, Material Religion and Religious Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple killings by serial or spree killers and the mass violence seen in war crimes and other atrocities have typically been understood as discrete category types, which can foster the view that there are fundamentally different kinds of human beings, including "deviants" who are born evil and innately given to sadism or a callous lack of empathy. In contrast, this book considers the violence of these "deviants" in terms of larger questions about human violence. Therefore, in addition to describing the life histories of a sample of individual serial and spree murderers, the book includes analysis of macro-level phenomena such as genocide, mass rape and killing, and torture occurring under conditions of war, state authorization, or political upheaval. The chief claim of the book is that, given the "right" combination of factors occurring at different levels of analysis, virtually anyone can emerge as a killer or perpetrator of atrocities. While it is crucial to understand individual killers in terms of the details of their biographies, it is equally crucial to understand political atrocities in terms of the details of their histories; and to see that persons and groups are always the product of complexly interacting assemblage processes.
