Book excerpt: Pride. Anger. Envy. Slothfulness. Lust. Greed. Gluttony. Is this an out-of-date list of sins preached against by a behind-the-times church? Or are these sins a challenge and a stumbling block for those of us who are living at the dawn of the twenty-first century? Pastor Ed Young, Jr. says, "I believe you can not only live what the world calls a 'good life,' but you can live what God calls a 'right life.' You can be free of the things that are hanging you up. But to be free, you can and must own up to the distractions described in this book."

Book excerpt: A Swift and Deadly Maelstrom The Great Norwich Flood of 1963 A Survivors Story by Thomas R. Moody Jr. The winter of 1962-63 in Norwich Connecticut had been unbearable. Snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures added to an already gloomy and drawn out New England winter, one which had seen its onset begin virtually at the end of the summer of 1962. Spaulding Pond in Mohegan Park, a large wooded enclave in the northern section of town, was abundantly full again this Wednesday, March 6th. So full in fact that it once again posed a challenge to the 110 year old dam by which it was held in place and where a small leak, another in an ever growing line of recent seepages, was now discovered this afternoon by park workers and reported up to the Public Works Director, himself a witness to these myriad other leaks, and who would summarily dismiss it this day as understood leakage. And so it was on this Wednesday March 6th, 1963 that Norwich Public Works foreman Monroe Cilley first noticed leakage coming from the southeast side of the dam. After a day of digging ditches in and around the park and checking catch basins throughout the area, Cilley, along with fellow employee Clarence Vantour, returned to the dam at around 4:00 p.m. to check the spillway for trees, debris or other obstructions following the days saturating rains. In the immediate downstream area of the dam, there was a small, gravel based, square duck pond which now, upon closer observation was also immensely flooded over. The two men initially attributed this to the recent torrential rains as indeed it was sprinkling even now, but observing the dam up close, Cilley now noticed that water was clearly trickling through it on the eastern end at a point above the southern retaining wall and down the south face and into the small pond. Somewhat alarmed, he now suggested that he and Vantour get out of their truck and perform an inspection at closer range. This time, unfortunately, this minor leakage episode would be different. A Swift and Deadly Maelstrom is the true, fully documented story of a horrible tragedy borne out of ignorance and complacency. As he (Norwich Public Works Director Harold Walz) entered the park on Mohegan Park Rd., driving past the skating pond and travelling north to the immediate east of the dam, he suddenly heard a sound that gave him pause. Slowing his car and opening his window, he heard the unmistakable and unnerving sound of rushing water. Clearly concerned, he quickly maneuvered his headlights onto the south face of the dam and there he now saw water gushing out of a fist sized hole above the base rock wall. This breach was in a different location from where hed observed the earlier seepage; it was lower and more easterly and thus presented a whole new and dangerous development in the dams integrity. Instantly understanding that he had a catastrophic problem on his hands, one with enormous consequences, Walz, again in his personal car and with no radio, raced into action, turning his car around and dashing down to the Public Works garage on Brook St. Arriving there, he rushed in and spoke with night foreman Angelo Yeitz, immediately ordering him to send a worker back up to the dam. I just came down from the dam and we might lose it. he exclaimed. It is also the story, alternately, of life saving heroics, of the efforts of two young men, suddenly trapped in the ensuing floodwaters, to rescue three very young children, those that would tragically lose their mother in this disaster. With a manic survival instinct now taking hold, the adults, while struggling, managed to somehow re-orient themselves while upside down. The doors to the car had sprung open in the crash and while the onrushing flow cascaded through the overturned car, Ronnie, Honey and Tony all managed to locate the children and physically grasp them before the unthinkable could occur. Noticing their proximity to the, for now, dr

Book excerpt: For Women Who Want More Than Comparing, Competing, and Coveting All of creation is content to be what it was made to be except us. Fish flourish in water. Ants are not worried about their size. But we waste time on the three C's--comparing, competing, coveting. We aim at the bull's-eye on someone else's board, pursuing a race we weren't equipped to run. Cheryl Martin shows women how to develop their God-given uniqueness rather than becoming fixated on what they are not or do not have. Distinctly You unveils the actions and attitudes that may be sabotaging women and explores ways women can engage and build up their unique talents, interests, and strengths. Readers will be inspired by examples in the Old and New Testaments of people who were exceptional for God's kingdom. As the author shares her ongoing quest to be distinct for his glory, readers see how God created them to thrive. Includes end-of-chapter questions for individual or group use.

Book excerpt: Discover a profound spiritual practice leading to success in the business of life. The Tap is about accepting the inherent responsibility and gaining the confidence in your ability to handle more, whether it's more wealth, health, happiness, or relationships. This book is for those who don't feel they're succeeding at the level they desire in the business we're all in: the business of life. Whether you're seeking greater financial rewards or some other kind of uplift, this book reveals there's one solution: Learning to feel The Tap and then acting on it. It primes you to start thinking that the rewards of success aren't meant for you alone, regardless of whether those rewards are already in hand or coming soon. But the rewards will come with astonishing speed and size to those who act on the greater responsibility that comes with greater blessings. Inspired by the biblical passage, 'from those to whom much is entrusted, much will be expected,' The Tap promises readers that as they attune themselves to this enduring truth, they'll feel God's tap and experience breakthroughs beyond comprehension. In The Tap, renowned real-estate "rock czar" Frank McKinney reveals the most important spiritual principle and practice of his astronomical success. He reveals how God has tapped him (and taps everyone) many times in life, answering prayers and presenting life-changing opportunities. Why, then, haven't you always recognized your own "Tap Moments"? The author explains this common oversight and leads you to find how you, too, have been blessed with the special ability to succeed at some level, yet the rewards of your success aren't meant for you alone. The author isn't a preacher or man of the cloth; he's a businessman who's discovered that faithful stewardship is a prerequisite to receiving greater resources. This inspiring yet practical guide is for those who want to succeed at a higher level with the business we're all in: the business of life. In The Tap, McKinney shows how you, too, can enrich your life beyond what you might ever have imagined for yourself--if you learn how to listen and respond to The Tap. The Tap: Feel it, follow it, and find your highest calling. Sensitize yourself to God's call and be prepared for the times when you're most likely to experience Tap Moments. Have confidence to handle the rapid rate of ascent that usually accompanies The Tap. Realize why you can't really understand or apply such popular ideas as the law of attraction and 'the secret' until you've been tapped. Combine compassionate capitalism and spiritual stewardship for progressive business models and practices.

Book excerpt: WARNING: This book may be hazardous to your religious lethargy! No one reads this book without being changed! No one reads this book without being incredibly challenged and blessed! Why? because the topic of the Holy Spirit carries with it a powerful transforming energy which renews the soul of anyone who approaches it. After the cross, the most important teaching in all of Christendom is the doctrine of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. John said that he baptized with water, but the one who was to come after him would baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit! This sacred fire, the fire of love, is here. Now. A gift. A treasure for you. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate that the filling of the Spirit is not merely an idea to believe in but an enlightening, empowering encounter to be experienced each day. It is the throbbing heart of a vital, dynamic Christianity. Consciousness is rising as Christians move the foundation of their spiritual lives from law to grace, from rules to relationship, from dogma to devotion from belief to experience. This book invites you to be part of this exciting journey, part of the new Pentecost. It is designed to move you from a traditional doctrinal paradigm as the foundation of your religious experience to a new, relational-spiritual paradigm which recognizes that connection in the now, moment by moment intimate connection with the Divine through the in-dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, is everything. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, which is given unto us. Romans 5:5

Book excerpt: Jet airliner operations in the United States began in 1958, bringing, it was thought, a new era of fast, high, safe, smooth, sophisticated travel. But almost immediately, the new aircraft were involved in incidents and accidents that showed jets created new problems even as they solved old ones. This book discusses five disasters or near-disasters of the early Jet Age, experiences which shook the industry, regulators and public out of early complacency and helped build a more realistic foundation for safer air transportation. Special attention is paid to the 1966 destruction of Braniff International Airways Flight 250 in Nebraska. Nearly two years of inquiry helped advance the understanding of jet operations in severe weather and saw the first use of cockpit voice recorder technology in an aviation accident investigation. In addition, a University of Chicago professor, Dr. Tetsuya "Ted" Fujita, conducted a more intensive investigation of the weather system which downed Flight 250. Dr. Fujita's already extensive knowledge of thunderstorms and tornadoes led to his creation of the Fujita Scale of Tornado Intensity, the F-scale that we hear about so frequently during storm season.
