Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... had the power of appointing and setting apart Deaconesses whensoever they pleased. 8. Authorities.--If I could have fulfilled my promise thoroughly, I should have concluded with a large list of books which bear directly or indirectly upon this subject of the Primitive Diaconate of Women. Under present circumstances I will limit myself to the mention of the following:1--I.--Ziegler: "De Diaoonis et Diaconissis."--Wittenberg, 1678. 2.--The late Bishop of Lincoln's Notes, in his Greek Testament, on the following passages: I Tim. iii. II, v. 3. 3.--Bingham's "Antiquities of the Christian Church."--i Book II. ch. xxii., and VII. ch. x. 4.--Various Essays in German and English, published at Kaiserwerth, especially by Pastor Fliedner. 5.--"Six Months among the Charities of Europe," by John de Liedfe (2 Vols., London, 1865). 6.--"Sisterhoods and Deaconesses at Home and Abroad," by the Rev. H. C. Potter, C.D. (now Coadjutor Bishop of New York.)--New York, 1873. 1 I attach great importance to what is said by M. Renan on this subject. On the one hand he is free from partisanship on such a point, and on the other hand he retains much of his old ecclesitical sympathies. His historical insight enables him to perceive in the institutions of the very earliest Church both the marvellous appearance of the ministry of women as a great fact, and the official appointment of women-deacons side by side with the men-deacons. It should be very carefully noticed that the indirect evidence furnished by Liturgical Services constitutes an evidence more cogent than any evidence which is direct.1 The learned writers quoted above have referred to what is found of this kind in the work of Goar. I may be allowed to add what I produced in the preface to my work...

Book excerpt: In the late 19th century, the Church of England began to embrace the idea of deaconesses - women who would serve the church in a role similar to male deacons. This groundbreaking book, by church reformer Louisa Twining, offers a detailed history of the movement and argues for greater acceptance of deaconesses and their work. Twining also discusses her efforts to train and supervise workhouse girls, who were often neglected and mistreated in contemporary institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the centrality of the threefold orders of bishop, priest and deacon to Anglicanism, deacons have been virtually invisible in the contemporary Church of England. 'Inferior Office?' is the first complete history of this neglected portion of theclergy, tracing the church's changing theology of the diaconate from the Ordinal of 1550 to the present day. Francis Young skilfully overturns the widely held belief that before the twentieth century, the diaconate was merely a brief and nominal period of probation for priests, revealing how it became an integral part of the Elizabethan defence of conformity and exploring the diverse range of ministries assumed by lifelong deacons in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Lifelong deacons often belonged to a marginalised 'lower class' of the clergy that has since been forgotten, an oversight of considerable importance to the wider social history of the clergy that is corrected in this volume. 'Inferior Office?' tells the story of persistent calls for the revival of a distinctive diaconate within the Victorian Church of England and situates the institution of deaconesses and later revival of the distinctive diaconate for women, as well as subsequent developments, within their wider historical context. Set against this backdrop, Young presents a balanced case both for and against the further development of a distinctive diaconate today, offering much to further discussion and debate amongst clergy of the Church of England and all those with an interest in the rich tapestry of its history.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights the thorny and divisive issue of the admission of women into the sacramental diaconal priesthood of the Christian Church from the Orthodox theological perspective. The contributions here stem from scientific papers presented at an international conference titled “Deaconesses, Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology”, organized in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2015 by the Center of Ecumenical, Missiological and Environmental Studies (CEMES). They cover almost all the fields of biblical, liturgical, patristic, systematic, canonical, and historical theology. The volume’s main focus is the ancient order of deaconesses, in connection with the overall issue of the ordination of women. Although most papers address the issues from an Orthodox perspective, their sober analysis can provide theological argumentation for the wider Christian community, both the Churches and Christian denominations that exclude women from the sacramental priesthood, and those that have already adopted their ordination.
