Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six hundred years after Poggio’s retrieval of the De rerum natura, and with the recent surge of interest in Lucretius and his influence, there has never been a better time to fully assess and recognize the shaping force of his thought and poetry over European culture from antiquity to modern times. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and updated overview of Lucretius as philosopher and as poet, with special attention to how these two aspects interact. The volume includes 18 contributions by established as well as early career scholars working on Lucretius’ philosophical and poetic work, and his reception both in ancient and early modern times. All the chapters present new and original research. Section I explores core issues of Epicurean-Lucretian epistemology and ethics. Section II expounds much new material on ancient response to and reception of Lucretius. Section III presents new material and analysis on the immediate, fraught early modern reception of the poem. Section IV offers a wide collection of new and original papers on Lucretius’ fortunes in the period from Machiavelli up to Victorian times. Section V explores little known aspects of the iconographical and biographical motifs related to the De rerum natura.
Book Synopsis Studies in Ancient Greek Philosophy by : D. M. Spitzer
Download or read book Studies in Ancient Greek Philosophy written by D. M. Spitzer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning a wide range of texts, figures, and traditions from the ancient Mediterranean world, this volume gathers far-reaching, interdisciplinary papers on Greek philosophy from an international group of scholars. The book’s 16 chapters address an array of topics and themes, extending from the formation of philosophy from its first stirrings in archaic Greek as well as Egyptian, Persian, Mesopotamian, and Indian sources, through central concepts in ancient Greek philosophy and literatures of the classical period and into the Hellenistic age. Studies in Ancient Greek Philosophy offers both in-depth, rigorous, attentive investigations of canonical texts in Western philosophy, such as Plato’s Phaedo, Gorgias, Republic, Phaedrus, Protagoras and the Metaphysics, De Caelo, Nichomachean Ethics, Generation and Corruption of Aristotle’s corpus, as well as inquiries that reach back into the rich archives of the Mediterranean Basin and forward into the traditions of classical philosophy beyond the ancient world. Studies in Ancient Greek Philosophy is of interest to students and scholars working on different aspects of ancient Greek philosophy, as well as ancient philosophy, more broadly.

Book Synopsis The Poetic World of Statius' Silvae by : Michael Putnam
Download or read book The Poetic World of Statius' Silvae written by Michael Putnam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the essays of this volume, Michael Putnam shows how seriously Statius pays homage to his canonical predecessor, Virgil, how thoroughly he interprets the complexities of Virgilian poetry, and how he often, by placing a Virgilian reference in a different social and cultural context, boldly turns Virgil to new and more positive purposes. He focuses particularly, though not exclusively, on those Silvae which deal with the architectural world of Statius' society, the private villas, the gardens, and the imperial palace. He also writes of the Roman equivalent of the 'Grand Tour,' a young man's educational journey through the monuments of Egypt, Greece, and Asia Minor. The essays offer valuable insight into the cultural and social identity of late first-century imperial Rome. Statius' reverential but also heuristic engagement with Virgil emerges more distinctly across the interrelated essays. Putnam's collected essays display the pioneering nature of Statius' Silvae in the development of ecphrasis as an important social and literary mode in Roman poetry.

Book Synopsis Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ by : Antonio Ramírez de Verger
Download or read book Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ written by Antonio Ramírez de Verger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verse-by-verse commentary on the Ovidian text includes the reading of more than 300 manuscripts, including the so-called Heinsian manuscripts, and of almost 100 editions, from the two "editiones principes" of 1471 to the present day. The introduction describes the manuscripts used, and a history of the Ovidian editions is also traced. A new text of book VI is presented, accompanied by a slim and lucid critical apparatus. Futher information appears in the commentary and in the appendices, particularly readings of manuscripts and editions. The verbatim commentary offers, with reliable quotes for each term, the critical observations of all the editors and commentators of the Ovidian work throughout the centuries. This aspect of critical edition has been neglected by commentators of Ovid since Heinsius (1659) and Burman (1727). Two appendices ("Readings of manuscripts" and "Readings of editions") are added for the first time for readers of the Ovidian work. The volume closes with a "Select index of textual problems", a large "Index locorum" and an "Index nominum".
