Book Synopsis L’Humain et l’Animal dans la France médiévale (XIIe-XVe s.) by : Irène Fabry-Tehranchi
Download or read book L’Humain et l’Animal dans la France médiévale (XIIe-XVe s.) written by Irène Fabry-Tehranchi and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This is the first volume that explores the changing relationships between humans and animals, both real and fantastic, in medieval France, from a completely interdisciplinary perspective. The authors examine the way the human-animal rapport was imagined, defined and remodeled in thought, culture and artistic production. The distinction between human and animal, fundamental in the Bible and in Ancient philosophy, was challenged throughout the course of the 12th century. This phenomenon can be traced in changes in the terminology used to designate animals, in their representations in the arts and literature, and in the reworking of fundamental texts such as the Physiologus and the bestiaries. The borders between the human and the animal world, based on criteria such as linguistic ability, the capacity to laugh and even legal responsibility, evolved and were fundamentally reconsidered between the 12th and the 15th century.

It compares and contrasts for the first time popular science works published at the same time in the two countries, focusing both on non-fictional and fictional texts. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of the Journal Labyrinth is dedicated to the philosophy of Jan Patocka. It commemorates not only the 110th anniversary of his birth but also the 40th anniversary of his tragic death in 1977. In that year Patocka became one of the first spokespersons of the civil rights movement Charter 77 - an engagement marked by confrontation with the communist regime, which ultimately cost him his life. The issue's title invokes this double commemoration and alludes to his most famous and most heartily debated book, "Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History." These essays, written towards the end of his life, in some sense can be seen as the culmination of his inquiries and long-term aspirations in the philosophy of history. Yet, it is by no means unequivocal why the author deemed these six essays to be "heretical."

Book Synopsis Face to Face with Animals by : Peter Atterton
Download or read book Face to Face with Animals written by Peter Atterton and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of primary and secondary source material dedicated solely to the animal question in Levinas. Drawing on previously unpublished material, including the recent discovery and digitization of the original French recording of an interview with Levinas that took place in 1986, it seeks to give fresh impetus to the debate surrounding the moral status of animals in Levinas's work. The book offers ten essays by leading scholars, along with a general introduction that places Levinas's philosophy in the context of the growing field of animal ethics. The aim of the volume is to encourage dialogue on how we can extend Levinas's ethics beyond its traditional human confines and to spur further research on the opportunities and challenges it raises.
