Book Synopsis Current Trends in Narratology by : Greta Olson
Download or read book Current Trends in Narratology written by Greta Olson and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Trends in Narratology offers an overview of cutting-edge approaches to theories of storytelling. The introduction details how new emphases on cognitive processing, non-prose and multimedia narratives, and interdisciplinary approaches to narratology have altered how narration, narrative, and narrativity are understood. The volume also introduces a third post-classical direction of research ‐ comparative narratology ‐ and describes how developments in Germany, Israel, and France may be compared with Anglophone research. Leading international scholars including Monika Fludernik, Richard Gerrig, Ansgar Nünning, John Pier, Brian Richardson, Alan Palmer, and Werner Wolf describe not only their newest research but also how this work dovetails with larger narratological developments.
Book Synopsis Cahiers de Recherche Tome 9 - Points de vue sur l'inversion by : Christine Copy
Download or read book Cahiers de Recherche Tome 9 - Points de vue sur l'inversion written by Christine Copy and published by Editions OPHRYS. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Clause Combining in Ancient Greek Narrative Discourse by : Michel Buijs
Download or read book Clause Combining in Ancient Greek Narrative Discourse written by Michel Buijs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the usage of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon’s Hellenica and Anabasis, with additional examples from other texts, using a text grammar-oriented approach, which can map more factors underlying the distribution of these clauses, and offers a more satisfactory explanation of a larger number of instances than is possible using the traditional sentence-level approach. The discourse-analytic description of the different clause types focuses on how relations are coded by means of subordinating conjunctions, the differences in form and function as discourse boundary markers between preposed, sentence-initially placed subclauses and participles, and the differences between clause types with respect to the information flow in on-going discourse. The discussion of many examples from the work of Xenophon makes this book interesting for both linguists and classical philologists.
Book Synopsis Linguistics into Interpretation by : Johannes M. van Ophuijsen
Download or read book Linguistics into Interpretation written by Johannes M. van Ophuijsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a sustained exercise in the genre of secondary literature which aims at explaining a literary work as much as possible in and through the author's own words. A crucial passage in direct speech by different speakers from the History of Herodotus, the earliest long Greek prose text, has been made the object of a systematic effort to distill and analyse the linguistic characteristics relevant to its interpretation, by confronting it with the rest of the work as well as with earlier and contemporary writings. This is done with the primary aim of placing the interpretation of a major author on the firmest ground available, the author's ipsissimi verba. The result, made accessible by full indexes, will prove helpful to readers of any part of Herodotus' History.

Download or read book The Narrator written by Sylvie Patron and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrator (the answer to the question "who speaks in the text?") is a commonly used notion in teaching literature and in literary criticism, even though it is the object of an ongoing debate in narrative theory. Do all fictional narratives have a narrator, or only some of them? Can narratives thus be "narratorless"? This question divides communicational theories (based on the communication between real or fictional narrator and narratee) and noncommunicational or poetic theories (which aim to rehabilitate the function of the author as the creator of the fictional narrative). Clarifying the notion of the narrator requires a historical and epistemological approach focused on the opposition between communicational theories of narrative in general and noncommunicational or poetic theories of the fictional narrative in particular. The Narrator offers an original and critical synthesis of the problem of the narrator in the work of narratologists and other theoreticians of narrative communication from the French, Czech, German, and American traditions and in representations of the noncommunicational theories of fictional narrative. Sylvie Patron provides linguistic and pragmatic tools for interrogating the concept of the narrator based on the idea that fictional narrative has the power to signal, by specific linguistic marks, that the reader must construct a narrator; when these marks are missing, the reader is able to perceive other forms and other narrative effects, specially sought after by certain authors.

Book Synopsis Phantom Sentences by : Robert S. Kawashima
Download or read book Phantom Sentences written by Robert S. Kawashima and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ann Banfield - professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley - is best known for her groundbreaking contributions to narrative theory. Working within the paradigm of generative linguistics, she argued that the language of fiction is characterized by two «unspeakable sentences», i.e., sentences that do not properly occur in the spoken language: the sentence of «pure narration» and the sentence of «represented speech and thought» (style indirect libre or erlebte Rede). More recently, Banfield offered a major reconsideration of the novels of Virginia Woolf and modernism in light of the philosophy of knowledge developed by G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, and appropriated by Roger Fry in his critical analyses of impressionism and post-impressionism. The essays gathered here pay tribute to Banfield by addressing those disciplines and topics most closely related to her work, including: narrative theory and pragmatics, the philosophy of language and knowledge, generative syntax, meter and phonology, and modernism.
