Download or read book War and Popular Culture written by Chang-tai Hung and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of popular culture in twentieth-century China, and of its political impact during the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945 (known in China as "The War of Resistance against Japan"). Chang-tai Hung shows in compelling detail how Chinese resisters used a variety of popular cultural forms—especially dramas, cartoons, and newspapers—to reach out to the rural audience and galvanize support for the war cause. While the Nationalists used popular culture as a patriotic tool, the Communists refashioned it into a socialist propaganda instrument, creating lively symbols of peasant heroes and joyful images of village life under their rule. In the end, Hung argues, the Communists' use of popular culture contributed to their victory in revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the crucial problems that confront mankind today are those associated with a degraded environment. This book examines the extent to which warfare and other military activities contribute to such degradation. The military capability to damage the environment and to cause ecological disruption has escalated, and there is no sign that the level of conflict in the world is decreasing. The military use and abuse of each of the several major global habitats -- temperate, tropical, desert, arctic, insular, and oceanic -- are evalusated separately in the light of the civil use and abuse of that habitat"--Dust jacket.

Download or read book Gilded Age written by Ivan Franceschini and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Chinese zodiac, 2017 was the year of the 'fire rooster', an animal often associated with the mythical fenghuang, a magnificently beautiful bird whose appearance is believed to mark the beginning of a new era of peaceful flourishing. Considering the auspicious symbolism surrounding the fenghuang, it is fitting that on 18 October 2017, President Xi Jinping took to the stage of the Nineteenth Party Congress to proclaim the beginning of a 'new era' for Chinese socialism. However, in spite of such ecumenical proclamations, it became immediately evident that not all in China would be welcome to reap the rewards promised by the authorities. Migrant workers, for one, remain disposable. Lawyers, activists and even ordinary citizens who dare to express critical views also hardly find a place in Xi's brave new world. This Yearbook traces the stark new 'gilded age' inaugurated by the Chinese Communist Party. It does so through a collection of more than 40 original essays on labour, civil society and human rights in China and beyond, penned by leading scholars and practitioners from around the world.

The document is organized into four sections roughly corresponding to the chronological periods in most U.S. history courses: Colonial Period through Revolution, Growth of a New Nation, Civil War through Industrialization, and The Modern Era. Many of the activities focus on landmark Supreme Court cases and modern cases to elucidate the meaning and judicial interpretation of the guarantees of the Bill of Rights. Topics include the Salem witch trials, lawful inspection, the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Dred Scott case, Plessy v. Ferguson, the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, the McCarthy era, and Watergate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current resurgence of interest in Heidegger, an important aspect of his thought has been neglected--namely, his long-standing interest in Asian philosophy. Heidegger and Asian Thought is the first book devoted to exploring this fascinating topic. It brings together essays twelve scholars from India, China, Japan, Germany, and the United States, most of which were written especially for this volume. The essays discuss Heidegger`s thinking in relation to Vedanta, Taoism, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Heidegger`s acquaintance with Asian thought--beginning from his familiarity with the Chuang-tzu as early as 1930--is fully documented, including an account of his work on a partial translation of the Tao Te` Ching into German. This book will be of interest not only to Heidegger scholars but also to students of Asian and comparative philosophy and religion.
