No two days are the same—our existence in this lifetime is a school of thought for the next. The miracles of God are the same today as they have been in the past. He is a spirit, he is invisible and he is what is, what was and what would be. Cephas is a man pressured by life's obstacles, a systems engineer living in London and exposed to harrowing escapades. Yet even in the face of adversity he is chosen to live by the word of God, not by his will but by a mystery that dumbfounds the wisdom of man. Can one day make the difference? Faith is the evidence, patience is a virtue and suspense is the attraction. Weaved in a vast arena with vivid scenarios from four continents he reveals an epic voyage of courage and hope in a quest for the reason behind his existence. Cephas is the man and life is a mystery. What is the missing link...

Book excerpt: In the dim twilight preceding the dawn of Indian literature the historical imagination can perceive the forms of Aryan warriors, the first Western conquerors of Hindustan, issuing from those passes in the north-west through which the tide of invasion has in successive ages rolled to sweep over the plains of India. The earliest poetry of this invading race, whose language and culture ultimately overspread the whole continent, was composed while its tribes still occupied the territories on both sides of the Indus now known as Eastern Kabulistan and the Panjab. That ancient poetry has come down to us in the form of a collection of hymns called the Rigveda. The cause which gathered the poems it contains into a single book was scientific and historical. The number of hymns comprised in the Rigveda, in the only recension which has been preserved, that of the Çakala school, is 1017, or, if the eleven supplementary hymns (called Valakhilya) which are inserted in the middle of the eighth book are added, 1028. These hymns are grouped in ten books, called mandalas, or "cycles," which vary in length, except that the tenth contains the same number of hymns as the first. In bulk the hymns of the Rigveda equal, it has been calculated, the surviving poems of Homer.

When the darkly seductive Liam calls in a favor, she'll find her carefully constructed world tilting on its axis as he draws her into a dangerous game against a wily enemy. The High Fey-creatures as powerful and beautiful as they are deadly-have come to town, their motivations unclear as lines are drawn and shadowy alliances made. And with them, they bring their Wild Hunt where everyone is either predator or prey. Betrayed and marked as its quarry, Aileen will find surviving until dawn has never been this hard. The only thing that might save her-are the vampires she doesn't trust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the tumultuous years of the English Revolution and Restoration, national crises like civil wars and the execution of the king convinced Englishmen that the end of the world was not only inevitable but imminent. National Reckonings shows how this widespread eschatological expectation shaped nationalist thinking in the seventeenth century. Imagining what Christ's return would mean for England's body politic, a wide range of poets, philosophers, and other writers—including Milton, Hobbes, Winstanley, and Thomas and Henry Vaughan,—used anticipation of the Last Judgment to both disrupt existing ideas of the nation and generate new ones. Ryan Hackenbracht contends that nationalism, consequently, was not merely a horizontal relationship between citizens and their sovereign but a vertical one that pitted the nation against the shortly expected kingdom of God. The Last Judgment was the site at which these two imagined communities, England and ecclesia (the universal church), would collide. Harnessing the imaginative space afforded by literature, writers measured the shortcomings of an imperfect and finite nation against the divine standard of a perfect and universal community. In writing the nation into end-times prophecies, such works as Paradise Lost and Leviathan offered contemporary readers an opportunity to participate in the cosmic drama of the world's end and experience reckoning while there was still time to alter its outcome.

Book excerpt: The Vedas are a collection of hymns and other ancient religious texts written in India between about 1500 and 1000 BCE. It includes elements such as liturgical material as well as mythological accounts, poems, prayers, and formulas considered to be sacred by the Vedic religion. According to tradition, Vyasa is the compiler of the Vedas, who arranged the four kinds of mantras into four Samhitas (Collections). There are four Vedas: the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharvaveda. The basic Vedic texts are the Samhita “Collections” of the four Vedas: Rig-Veda “Knowledge of the Hymns of Praise”, for recitation. Sama-Veda “Knowledge of the Melodies”, for chanting. Yajur-Veda “Knowledge of the Sacrificial formulas”, for liturgy. Atharva-Veda “Knowledge of the Magic formulas”, named after a kind of group of priests.

Book excerpt: Ardor, inspiration, the soul, the sublime: Such terms have long since fallen from favor among critics and artists alike. In his new collection of essays, Adam Zagajewski continues his efforts to reclaim for art not just the terms but the scanted spiritual dimension of modern human existence that they stake out. Bringing gravity and grace to his meditations on art, society, and history, Zagajewski wears his erudition lightly, with a disarming blend of modesty and humor. His topics range from autobiography (his first visit to a post-Soviet Lvov after childhood exile; his illicit readings of Nietzsche in Communist Poland); to considerations of artist friends past and present (Zbigniew Herbert, Czeslaw Milosz); to intellectual and psychological portraits of cities he has known, east and west; to a dazzling thumbnail sketch of postwar Polish poetry. Zagajewski gives an account of the place of art in the modern age that distinguishes his self-proclaimed liberal vision from the "right-wing radicalism" of such modernist precursors as Eliot or Yeats. The same mixture of ardor and compassion that marks Zagajewski's distinctive contribution to modern poetry runs throughout this eloquent, engaging collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an educated scientist and businessman, author Ramesh Malhotra is interested in unveiling the secrets of nature known to ancient spiritual scholars. In 2013, he published Spiritual Wisdom based on the holy scripture, Bhagavad Gita. During the last seven years, he’s been working to unveil truths buried in the Vedas. These Vedas were composed by spiritual scholars throughout many years before the second millennium BCE and extending into the Late Bronze Age. Through his investigation and research, based on personal devotion, he’s uncovered many aspects relating to the genesis of the dynamic universe, the creation of the planetary system, and its relationship to all creation and especially to humanity, which has prevailed for a long time on earth. In In Search of Absolute Truth, Malhotra journeys through complex, ancient Rig Veda mystic mythology, writings that cover various aspects of creation preservation and transformation. He shares that finding knowledge buried in holy scripture is like climbing a mountain. Your judgment and perception are constantly refined as you get higher and higher in understanding the Vedas. You come to know absolute truth only when you reach the peak and look around and see there are many hills that make the mountain peak of the absolute truth.

Book excerpt: About the Book THE THIRD BATTLE OF PANIPAT—THE FINAL ONE, THE BLOODIEST OF THEM ALL The Marathas and the king of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, fought to claim the throne of Delhi. While the face-off had stretched on for months on the elevated flat land of Panipat, the actual conflict took place on 14 January 1761. 150,000 soldiers lost their lives, and about 80,000 horses, bullocks and elephants were slaughtered. The Maratha warriors and their allies defied the bitter cold of the north and months of starvation, fighting to the last man. The campaign brought the Maratha empire to its knees, emptying out its coffers and decimating an entire generation. This battle most horrific has dazzled generations of historians. Its tactics, ingenious battle formations and fortifications, its reputation as the supreme war of wits has kept the third battle of Panipat alive in public memory. But a war is not only glory and splendour. It is fought by flesh-and-blood people who come alive in Vishwas Patil’s Panipat. Panipat, has received thirty-eight awards since its publication in 1988, and sold more than 2,50,000 copies.

Book excerpt: Everywhere, the twentieth century has been judged and condemned: the century of totalitarian terror, of utopian and criminal ideologies, of empty illusions, of genocides, of false avant-gardes, of democratic realism everywhere replaced by abstraction. It is not Badiou's wish to plead for an accused that is perfectly capable of defending itself without the authors aid. Nor does he seek to proclaim, like Frantz, the hero of Sartre's Prisoners of Altona, 'I have taken the century on my shoulders and I have said: I will answer for it!' The Century simply aims to examine what this accursed century, from within its own unfolding, said that it was. Badiou's proposal is to reopen the dossier on the century - not from the angle of those wise and sated judges we too often claim to be, but from the standpoint of the century itself.
