Book excerpt: Batman is an iconic hero of the comic book superworld and also a unique one. He is an ordinary man by day and the soicial saviour by night. His persona is both menacing and mysterious whilst the true man beneath the costume is heartfelt and sincere. Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire playboy, industrialist, and philanthropist. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, Wayne trains himself both physically and intellectually and creates a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime, operating in the fictional city of Gotham. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superpowers; he makes use of intellect, detective skills, science and technology, wealth, physical prowess, and intimidation in his war on crime. The initial character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger and first appeared in 1939. Batman became hugely popular soon after his introduction and gained his own comic book title, Batman, in 1940.This highly illustrative, graphic art rendition of the Batman story introduces a new, younger audience to his life story. The art is stereotypically one dimensional and highly indicative of the time from which the character was created. It is true comic-book style, but with text that is simple and accessible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K-pop (Korean popular music) reigns as one of the most popular music genres in the world today, a phenomenon that appeals to listeners of all ages and nationalities. In Soul in Seoul: African American Popular Music and K-pop, Crystal S. Anderson examines the most important and often overlooked aspect of K-pop: the music itself. She demonstrates how contemporary K-pop references and incorporates musical and performative elements of African American popular music culture as well as the ways that fans outside of Korea understand these references. K-pop emerged in the 1990s with immediate global aspirations, combining musical elements from Korean and foreign cultures, particularly rhythm and blues genres of black American popular music. Korean solo artists and groups borrow from and cite instrumentation and vocals of R&B genres, especially hip-hop. They also enhance the R&B tradition by utilizing Korean musical strategies. These musical citational practices are deemed authentic by global fans who function as part of K-pop’s music press and promotional apparatus. K-pop artists also cite elements of African American performance in Korean music videos. These disrupt stereotyped representations of Asian and African American performers. Through this process K-pop has arguably become a branch of a global R&B tradition. Anderson argues that Korean pop groups participate in that tradition through cultural work that enacts a global form of crossover and by maintaining forms of authenticity that cannot be faked, and furthermore propel the R&B tradition beyond the black-white binary.

Book excerpt: When Mark, a struggling small-business owner, hesitantly decides to meet an old friend of his father’s for a day of fishing and “business advice,” he doesn’t expect much. As far as he knows, his father has no real experience in business after all, and the “the captain” he is supposed to meet doesn’t exactly sound like a particularly helpful resource either. Little does he know that his day out on the lake with the man will change everything, identifying the blind spots in his own business understanding, attitudes, and perspectives. He’ll learn a great many things from the captain, but none more important than the concept of “Vision Meets Execution,” which details how the roles of CEO and COO need to work in concert and harmony to drive any business toward success, whether it’s a business with hundreds of employees or a business of one. Astounded by all he’s learned; Mark invites the captain to a meeting with his Office manager Dawn (whom he quickly realizes has been his COO all along) to expand on his incredible mentorship. That meeting would change every aspect of Mark’s business, establishing and clarifying the role of every team member and how they interrelate, embracing candour and inclusivity, and ensuring that every member of the team, including the CEO and COO, figure out how to stay in their own lanes. Though set within a fictional framework with the intent of making its lessons and advice a bit more palatable than the more common, and predictably dry, business manuals, make no mistake: This guide to business success will change the way you look at your business, regardless of its size, and with wisdom and insight that are easily grasped and put into action, help it reach new heights of success.
