Book excerpt: All good things must come to an end... Humanity is all but doomed. There is no way off the dying Earth unless William Clarke can complete the Teleportal, and it seems that every faction in the world has their sights set on acquiring the unfinished device. With their choices drastically limited and time running out, Baxter and the Sylvans must overcome not only the global geologic crisis that threatens to extinguish life on Earth, but also the newly formed android faction that seeks the elimination of humanity. As if things weren't bad enough already. There's an awful lot of backstabbing, bloodshed, and conflict going on - especially considering there isn't even going to be a planet to fight over for much longer.

Book excerpt: “Veil of Dawn’s Promise" unfolds in the futuristic city of Cyronis, a towering beacon of human ingenuity and technological prowess, set against a planet scarred by past mistakes. The city, under the vigilant surveillance of an entity known as the Watchers, encapsulates a perfect blend of advanced technology and strict societal control. Amidst this backdrop, the narrative follows Elysa Jane Hawthorne, a pivotal figure within Cyronis's intricate data nexus, who finds herself entangled in a web of clandestine rebellion and hidden truths. The story opens in the vibrant heart of Cyronis, the marketplace, where the rhythms of daily life are suddenly disrupted by a meticulously orchestrated assault. Shadowy figures, members of a terrorist faction known as The Veil of Dawn, execute a series of attacks, leaving the city in disarray and the populace reeling from the unexpected violence. The aftermath exposes the vulnerabilities of Cyronis’s seemingly impenetrable surveillance system and sets the stage for a deeper conflict. Elysa, grappling with fragmented dreams and a sense of a lost past, finds these disturbances unsettlingly close to her personal sphere. As she delves deeper, she discovers connections to her own life and a much larger conspiracy that extends to the very core of Cyronis's governance and its artificial intelligence, Orion. The story navigates through layers of political intrigue, personal discovery, and societal upheaval. Central to the narrative is the complex relationship between technology and humanity, explored through the lens of Elysa’s experiences and her interactions with Orion. The novel adeptly portrays the struggle for identity and freedom within a system designed for absolute control. Elysa’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she uncovers hidden aspects of her past and the true nature of her existence within Cyronis. "Veil of Dawn" masterfully weaves themes of surveillance, autonomy, and the human spirit against a backdrop of a futuristic dystopia. It presents a world where the lines between human emotion and technological advancements blur, creating a compelling narrative that questions the very essence of human freedom and the price of security.

Book excerpt: Consultant eye surgeon, Eric Arnott, was one of the original pioneers of small-incision surgery. He was the first to perform modern Phaco surgery in Europe and designed lens implants that have restored the sight to millions of patients. The word autobiography is simply insufficient to describe this book, which is a remarkable testament to the life, works and marriage of a remarkable man. The book details the original invention of the lens implant by Harold Ridley, who Eric worked with in his early years of medical training. It goes on to follow the development of small-incision Phaco surgery, instigated by Charlie Kelman, and the disinterest and contempt held by the peers of these ophthalmologic pioneers. The author describes every advance in this field of ophthalmology in fascinating detail. The importance to Eric of religion, spirituality, family life and helping others less fortunate than himself is reinforced in this enthralling and at times very amusing read. Arnott draws you into his narrative, rousing thoughts of disbelief as you are compelled to continue reading, each new chapter and event in his life proving as fascinating as the last. Entertaining and illuminating, A New Beginning in Sight provides a detailed history of ophthalmology and is essential reading for ophthalmologists, other specialists and non-specialists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important commentary on Vajrayana from the founder of the Dalai Lama's school of Buddhism. The Brilliantly Illuminating Lamp of the Five Stages (rim lnga rab tu gsal ba’i sgron me) is Tsong Khapa’s most important commentary on the perfection stage practices of the Esoteric Community (Guhyasamaja), the tantra he considered fundamental for the practice of the “father tantra” class of unexcelled yoga tantras. It draws heavily on Nagarjuna’s Five Stages (Pañcakrama) and Aryadeva’s Lamp that Integrates the Practices (Caryamelapakapradipa), as well as a vast range of perfection stage works included in the Tibetan canonical (Kangyur and Tengyur) collections. It is an important work for both scholars and practitioners. A reader of this work will find in it convincing evidence for Tsong Khapa’s own yogic experience and attainment, in coordination with his better-known philosophical and scholarly achievements. The present revised edition of the work is a cornerstone of the Complete Works of Jey Tsong Khapa and Sons collection, a subset of the Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences series. Comprised of the collected works of Tsong Khapa (1357–1419) and his spiritual sons, Gyaltsap Darma Rinchen (1364–1432) and Khedrup Gelek Pelsang (1385–1438), the numerous works in this set of Tibetan treatises and supercommentaries are based on the thousands of works in the Tibetan Buddhist canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colour is a sensation and as such it is a subjective and incommunicable quantity. Colour measurement is possible because we can create a correspondence between colour sensations and the light radiations that stimulate them. This correspondence concerns the physics of light radiation, the physiology of the visual process and the psychology of vision. Historically, in parallel to standard colorimetry, systems for colour ordering have been developed that allow colour specifications in a very practical and concrete way, based on the direct vision of material colour samples arranged in colour atlases. Colour-ordering systems are sources of knowledge of colour vision, which integrate standard colorimetry. Standard Colorimetry: Definitions, Algorithms and Software: Describes physiology and psychophysics useful to understand colorimetry Considers all the photometric and colorimetric systems standardized by CIE (XYZ, CIELAB, CIELUV, LMS) Presents colorimetric instrumentation in order to guide the reader toward colorimetric practice Discusses colorimetric computation to understand the meaning of numerical colour specification Considers colorimetry in colour syntheses and in imaging colour reproduction Includes ready-to-use, freely-available software, “Colorimetric eXercise”, which has multiple toolboxes dedicated to displaying CIE systems, atlases, any colour and its whole numerical specification colour-vision phenomena and tests Standard Colorimetry: Definitions, Algorithms and Software is an accessible and valuable resource for students, lecturers, researchers and laboratory technicians in colour science and image technology. Book excerpt: A beautiful collectible hardcover edition of the father of Korean American literature's "wonderfully resplendent evocation of a newcomer's America" (Chang-rae Lee, author of Native Speaker) A Penguin Vitae Edition Having fled Japanese-occupied Korea for the gleaming promise of the United States with nothing but four dollars and a suitcase full of Shakespeare to his name, the young, idealistic Chungpa Han arrives in a New York teeming with expatriates, businessmen, students, scholars, and indigents. Struggling to support his studies, he travels throughout the United States and Canada, becoming by turns a traveling salesman, a domestic worker, and a farmer, and observing along the way the idealism, greed, and shifting values of the industrializing twentieth century. Part picaresque adventure, part shrewd social commentary, East Goes West casts a sharply satirical eye on the demands and perils of assimilation. It is a masterpiece not only of Asian American literature but also of American literature. Penguin Vitae―loosely translated as "Penguin of one's life"―is a deluxe hardcover series from Penguin Classics celebrating a dynamic and diverse landscape of classic fiction and nonfiction from seventy-five years of classics publishing. Penguin Vitae provides readers with beautifully designed classics that have shaped the course of their lives, and welcomes new readers to discover these literary gifts of personal inspiration, intellectual engagement, and creative originality.

Book excerpt: This book examines many examples of the nocturnal behaviour of birds. For many people, watching and studying birds is exclusively a day time activity. However, for many birds twilight and night time are not a barrier to useful activity. It is true that very few birds are exclusively nocturnal, but many birds which are active by day also conduct limited, and often crucial, activities after dusk. Examples range from the occasional night feeding of wildfowl and shorebirds to the night singing and night migration of certain passerines, and from the location of nest sites by sea birds to the nocturnal foraging of owls and nightjars. The special cases of flightless nocturnal birds and those birds which dwell in lightless caves are also considered. Throughout, this survey considers not only what it is that birds do at night but also discusses how these nocturnal activities are possible. It brings together studies in field ornithology, sensory science, ecology and physics and involves comparisons of the sensory capacities of other animals, including man. It is shown how the senses of hearing, smell and touch, as well as vision, play a crucial role in many of the night time activities of birds. However, these senses are not always adequate for fully explaining how nocturnal behaviours are executed. To achieve this we must look at the complex of relationships between behavioural and sensory adaptations and the particular environments which birds inhabit from dusk to dawn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates three decades of owl monkey research conducted since 1994 when the first and only book focused on the genus Aotus was published. Owl monkeys were one of the least understood primates then; knowledge from wild populations was only beginning to emerge and there had been some substantial research in colonies of captive individuals. The situation is very different today. Research on captive owl monkeys has continued to develop, with valuable contributions to the health and medical sciences. And there is now enough information on the behavior, ecology, conservation, and biogeography of the genus that merits a synthesis. The book synthesizes new field data on the biogeography, behavioral ecology, circadian biology, population biology and demography spanning their entire continental range from Panamá to Argentina. It includes theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, biological anthropology, anatomy, morphology and physiology, genetics, endocrinology and conservation biology to examine a specic set of adaptations that have allowed owl monkeys to exploit the nocturnal niche while functioning in a pair-living sexually monogamous system with remarkable patterns of paternal care. The author, with 30 years of research experience with both captive and wild primates, has directed the longest project on any owl monkey species and has conducted extensive original research on their biology, adaptive radiation and behavioral ecology. His expertise and published record on both wild populations and laboratory colonies makes this book one of a kind; it presents information from both captive and wild primates and explores questions through the integration of both approaches. The volume offers some additional features that make it novel in its approach: (1) brings together a combination of senior researchers who during four decades have established captive owl monkeys as a system of study with a new generation of younger scientists who have, for the last 10-20 years, been spearheading their study in the wild, (2) presents the work of a remarkably diverse range of authors representing all countries where owl monkeys are present, as well as researchers from the U.S and Europe, and (3) offers “synthesis” chapters; in doing so, it will surely become a reference book for those specifically drawn to owl monkeys, as well as for those interested in the research topics that are covered.
