Book excerpt: Love stories, with a twist, by Russia’s preeminent contemporary fiction writer—the author of the prizewinning memoir about growing up in Stalinist Russia, The Girl from the Metropol Hotel By turns sly and sweet, burlesque and heartbreaking, these realist fables of women looking for love are the stories that Ludmilla Petrushevskaya—who has been compared to Chekhov, Tolstoy, Beckett, Poe, Angela Carter, and even Stephen King—is best known for in Russia. Here are attempts at human connection, both depraved and sublime, by people across the life span: one-night stands in communal apartments, poignantly awkward couplings, office trysts, schoolgirl crushes, elopements, tentative courtships, and rampant infidelity, shot through with lurid violence, romantic illusion, and surprising tenderness. With the satirical eye of Cindy Sherman, Petrushevskaya blends macabre spectacle with transformative moments of grace and shows just why she is Russia’s preeminent contemporary fiction writer.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book-length study of gender politics in Ngugi wa Thiong'o's fiction. Brendon Nicholls argues that mechanisms of gender subordination are strategically crucial to Ngugi's ideological project from his first novel to his most recent one. Nicholls describes the historical pressures that lead Ngugi to represent women as he does, and shows that the novels themselves are symptomatic of the cultural conditions that they address. Reading Ngugi's fiction in terms of its Gikuyu allusions and references, a gendered narrative of history emerges that creates transgressive spaces for women. Nicholls bases his discussion on moments during the Mau Mau rebellion when women's contributions to the anticolonial struggle could not be reduced to a patriarchal narrative of Kenyan history, and this interpretive maneuver permits a reading of Ngugi's fiction that accommodates female political and sexual agency. Nicholls contributes to postcolonial theory by proposing a methodology for reading cultural difference. This methodology critiques cultural practices like clitoridectomy in an ethical manner that seeks to avoid both cultural imperialism and cultural relativisim. His strategy of 'performative reading,' that is, making the conditions of one text (such as folklore, history, or translation) active in another (for example, fiction, literary narrative, or nationalism), makes possible an ethical reading of gender and of the conditions of reading in translation.

Book excerpt: Winner of the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award "A charming book about enchantment, a profound book about fairy tales."—John Updike, The New York Times Book Review Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Analyzing a wide range of traditional stories, from the tales of Sindbad to “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “The Sleeping Beauty,” Bettelheim shows how the fantastical, sometimes cruel, but always deeply significant narrative strands of the classic fairy tales can aid in our greatest human task, that of finding meaning for one’s life.

Book excerpt: I have heard many arguments, questions and comments in reference to homosexuality, and there is now a burden on my heart to express plainly how offensive this is in the sight of God. I will try to merge all these arguments, questions and comments together and balance them by the Word of God. I pray you read this with an open heart and mind. Well, I am going to point out a few things that may come as a shock to you. You must approach this subject with an open mind, and form your own conclusions, since mind control is about telling people what to do and how to think, and I am certainly not trying to control you or your life. There are some aspects of reality that people nowadays are not taught, due to an overwhelming feeling of fear created by those very aspects of reality. There are mass movements of gays and lesbians going on around the world, even in largely homophobic enclaves such as in many African societies. All of these are not an accident folks; it is a careful orchestration by the one who seeks Man's destruction. I certainly see a prophetic significance in the recent homosexual upsurge. The modern homosexual upsweep is one phase of a declining trend in morals. When the disciples asked our Lord, "What shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the consummation of the age?" He told them that "iniquity shall abound" (Matthew 24:3, 12). There is today permissiveness and promiscuity in sexual behavior unprecedented in the history of America and of the world. There is little restraint upon the widespread of materials containing pictures and writings depicting erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement. This would be included in our Lord's prophecy about abounding iniquity.

Book excerpt: In a grand tour of comic theater over the centuries, Erich Segal traces the evolution of the classical form from its early origins in a misogynistic quip by the sixth-century B.C. Susarion, through countless weddings and happy endings, to the exasperated monosyllables of Samuel Beckett. With fitting wit, profound erudition lightly worn, and instructive examples from the mildly amusing to the uproarious, his book fully illustrates comedy's glorious life cycle from its first breath to its death in the Theater of the Absurd.

When their younger son told them in 2004 that he was gay, Sushma was devastated. She wanted to know why this had happened to her family, who was to blame, and what she should do next. To come to terms with her son's sexual orientation, she began to educate herself about homosexuality, a topic that Sushma had no exposure to. She went to counseling and attended PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meetings. After much soul searching and many conversations with her son, husband, and others, Sushma accepted her son for who he was. In Loving My Gay Child, Sushma reveals how she came to terms with her son's orientation, shared the news with friends and family, and finally threw a beautiful traditional gay Hindu wedding for her son and his fiancé.

Book excerpt: Male homosexual narratives in various genres and media—from “high-brow” literature by distinguished female authors to “pornographic” comic books produced and distributed by amateurs—have attracted the attention of a number of cultural critics in Japan and abroad. This book represents the first extensive critical attempt to examine Japanese women's narratives of male homosexuality/homoeroticism, addressing not only popular culture genres, but also the considerable body of critically acclaimed literary works (with English translations of the original works). The result is an in-depth analysis of the ways in which female fantasies of male homosexuality/homoeroticism may be composed, acknowledged, and interrogated.

Or was he the first white man to write a love poem to an Aboriginal woman? Was he both? Did the Finke River missionaries imprison and beat their recalcitrant converts, or did they mark out a future path for a people abandoned by South Australian society? Did the mission connive at the murder of the men who opposed them? Did they really convert anyone to Lutheran Christianity? And what did the people and governments of South Australia know and care about their northern frontier? Could a policeman be hanged for murder? This book goes beyond the stereotypes to answer these questions. It brings back to life some remarkable people.

Book excerpt: This book presents an innovative comparative view of how the issue of adolescent sexuality and consent is differently treated in various media. Analyzing teenage sexual encounters with adults across a variety of media, including films, television, novels, and podcasts, the volume takes a positive stance on the expression of teenage sexuality, while remaining sensitive to the power of adults to abuse and manipulate. The anthology treats these representations as negotiations between conflicting forces: desire, sexual self-knowledge, unequal power, and the law, the latter both actual legal statutes and internalized law in the philosophical and psychoanalytic sense. Questions of unequal power inherent in such relations are theorized. The authors examine variations of this configuration of sexual relations between teenagers and adults from different perspectives, to consider how various forms of expression rework it formally. These essays are attuned to both nuances of presentation and contexts of reception, and they consider how aesthetics play a role. Contributing to the general debate about the ways that societies construct and regulate adolescent sexuality, this book will be of great interest to scholars and students of media studies, cultural studies, film studies, television studies, sociology, and gender studies
