Book Synopsis R-Trees: Theory and Applications by : Yannis Manolopoulos
Download or read book R-Trees: Theory and Applications written by Yannis Manolopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space support in databases poses new challenges in every part of a database management system & the capability of spatial support in the physical layer is considered very important. This has led to the design of spatial access methods to enable the effective & efficient management of spatial objects. R-trees have a simplicity of structure & together with their resemblance to the B-tree, allow developers to incorporate them easily into existing database management systems for the support of spatial query processing. This book provides an extensive survey of the R-tree evolution, studying the applicability of the structure & its variations to efficient query processing, accurate proposed cost models, & implementation issues like concurrency control and parallelism. Written for database researchers, designers & programmers as well as graduate students, this comprehensive monograph will be a welcome addition to the field.

Book Synopsis Applications of Logic Databases by : Raghu Ramakrishnan
Download or read book Applications of Logic Databases written by Raghu Ramakrishnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise behind developing powerful declarative database languages is compelling: by enabling users to specify their queries (and their integrity constraints) in a clear, non-operational way, they make the user's task easier, and provide the database system with more opportunities for optimization. Relational database systems offer a striking proof that this premise is indeed valid. The most popular relational query language, SQL, is based upon relational algebra and calculus, i.e., a small fragment of first-order logic, and the ease of writing queries in SQL (in comparison to more navigational languages) has been an important factor in the commercial success of relational databases. It is well-known that SQL has some important limitations, in spite of its success and popUlarity. Notably, the query language is non-recursive, and support for integrity constraints is limited. Indeed, recognizing these problems, the latest standard, SQL-92, provides increased support for integrity constraints, and it is anticipated that the successor to the SQL-92 standard, called SQL3, RECURSIVE UNION operation [1]. Logic database systems have will include a concentrated on these extensions to the relational database paradigm, and some systems (e.g., Bull's DEL prototype) have even incorporated object-oriented features (another extension likely to appear in SQL3).

Book Synopsis Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems VI by : Sushil Jajodia
Download or read book Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems VI written by Sushil Jajodia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-12-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and integration of integrity and internal control mechanisms into information system infrastructures is a challenge for researchers, IT personnel and auditors. Since its beginning in 1997, the IICIS international working conference has focused on the following questions: what precisely do business managers need in order to have confidence in the integrity of their information systems and their data and what are the challenges IT industry is facing in ensuring this integrity; what are the status and directions of research and development in the area of integrity and internal control; where are the gaps between business needs on the one hand and research / development on the other; what needs to be done to bridge these gaps. This sixth volume of IICIS papers, like the previous ones, contains interesting and valuable contributions to finding the answers to the above questions. We want to recommend this book to security specialists, IT auditors and researchers who want to learn more about the business concerns related to integrity. Those same security specialists, IT auditors and researchers will also value this book for the papers presenting research into new techniques and methods for obtaining the desired level of integrity.
Book Synopsis Active and Real-Time Database Systems (ARTDB-95) by : Mikael Berndtsson
Download or read book Active and Real-Time Database Systems (ARTDB-95) written by Mikael Berndtsson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The areas of active and real-time databases have seen a tremendous growth of interest in the past few years, particularly with regard to their support of time-critical and embedded applications. ARTDB-95 provided, therefore, an important forum for researchers from both communities to discuss research results, and also to chart new directions for the future. As well as the 11 submitted papers presented at the workshop, this volume also contains 4 invited papers on the following topics: the impact of active databases on commercial practice; the optimization of active database transactions; the need for better language, compiler and tool support for real-time databases; and the origin of time constraints associated with data, events and actions. Together the papers give a comprehensive overview of current research, and will provide invaluable reading for academic and industrial researchers and students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
