Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex Stainless Steels (DSSs) are chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloys that are usually in proportions optimized for equalizing the volume fractions of austenite and ferrite. Due to their ferritic-austenitic microstructure, they possess a higher mechanical strength and a better corrosion resistance than standard austenitic steels. This type of steel is now increasing its application and market field due to its very good properties and relatively low cost. This book is a review of the most recent progress achieved in the last 10 years on microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties, as well as applications, due to the development of new grades. Special attention will be given to fatigue and fracture behavior and to proposed models to account for mechanical behavior. Each subject will be developed in chapters written by experts recognized around the international industrial and scientific communities. The use of duplex stainless steels has grown rapidly in the last 10 years, particularly in the oil and gas industry, chemical tankers, pulp and paper as well as the chemical industry. In all these examples, topics like welding, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties (mainly in the fatigue domain) are crucial. Therefore, the update of welding and corrosion properties and the introduction of topics like texture effects, fatigue and fracture strength properties, and mechanical behavior modeling give this book specific focus and character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive treatment of hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials, mainly of steels. The subject is increasingly important with regard to recent requirements for hydrogen energy equipment. Recent progress in revealing the nature of hydrogen embrittlement is remarkable, and this book provides students and researchers engaging in hydrogen problems with a comprehensive view of hydrogen embrittlement covering basic behaviors of hydrogen in materials and their various manifestations in degradation of mechanical properties. Previous studies are critically reviewed and recent advances including new ideas on the mechanism of embrittlement are presented. Emphases are put on experimental facts, but their meanings rather than phenomenological appearance are given particular attention. Experiments are noted on adopted conditions since the operating mechanism of hydrogen might differ by materials and environments. For theories, assumptions and premises employed are noted so as to examine their versatility. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, brief descriptions of fundamental ideas are presented when necessary.

Book excerpt: This report supplies information on joining processes applicable to titanium and its alloys in sheet metal applications, primarily related directly to airframe construction. Although the material presented here does not cover all titanium joining processes, and omits such processes as plasma-arc, submerged-arc, electroslag, flash, and high-frequency resistance welding, the data presented cover materials up to 2-inches thick in some cases and the report should be useful to anyone seeking titanium joining information. The joining processes covered fall into five categories: welding, brazing, metallurgical bonding (diffusion and deformation bonding), adhesive bonding, and mechanical fastening. The fusion welding processes that are discussed in detail include gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, arc spot, and electron beam. The resistance processes give extended coverage are spot, roll spot, and seam welding. (Author).

Book excerpt: Heterostructured (HS) materials represent an emerging class of materials that are expected to become a major research field for the communities of materials, mechanics, and physics in the next couple of decades. One of the biggest advantages of HS materials is that they can be produced by large-scale industrial facilities and technologies and therefore can be commercialized without the scaling up and high-cost barriers that are often encountered by other advanced materials. This book collects recent papers on the progress in the field of HS materials, especially their fundamental physics. The papers are arranged in a sequence of chapters that will help new researchers entering the field to have a quick and comprehensive understanding of HS materials, including the fundamentals and recent progress in their processing, characterization, and properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steel is increasingly used in construction due to its corrosion resistance, ease of maintenance, aesthetics and fire resistance. In spite of these benefits, its application in structures has been inhibited by a lack of design guidance that makes optimum use of its properties. An extensive test programme was carried out on structural members and connections in stainless steel. The project concentrated on the most commonly used austenitic grades 1.4301 and 1.4401 and one duplex grade, 1.4462. One work package studied ferritic grades. Numerical models were calibrated against these test results, and then used to analyse the effects of a wider range of parameters than those tested. The existing design rules in the Eurocode covering design of structural stainless steel, ENV 1993-1-4, were compared against the experimental and numerical data. Where the rules proved excessively conservative, more economic design rules were developed. The results of the project will lead to both revision and addition to the existing guidance in ENV 1993-1-4 as well as ENV 1993-1-2, the Eurocode covering design of structures in fire. Key recommandations include : - less severe limiting width-to-thickness ratios for welded flanges and webs in compression, webs subject to bending and circular hollow sections subject to bending; - less severe buckling curves for major axis flexural buckling and lateral torsional buckling of welded I-sections; - a new design approach for shear buckling and web crippling, closely based on the ENV 1993-1-5 rules; - a method for predicting the fire resistance of beams and columns.

This book was released on 2016-04-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents guidelines on quantitative and qualitative measures of the geometric features and imperfections of welds to ensure that it meets the fatigue strength requirements laid out in the recommendations of the IIW (International Institute of Welding). Welds that satisfy these quality criteria can be assessed in accordance with existing IIW recommendations based on nominal stress, structural stress, notch stress or linear fracture mechanics. Further, the book defines more restrictive acceptance criteria based on weld geometry features and imperfections with increased fatigue strength. Fatigue strength for these welds is defined as S-N curves expressed in terms of nominal applied stress or hot spot stress. Where appropriate, reference is made to existing quality systems for welds. In addition to the acceptance criteria and fatigue assessment curves, the book also provides guidance on their inspection and quality control. The successful implementation of these methods depends on adequate training for operators and inspectors alike. As such, the publication of the present IIW Recommendations is intended to encourage the production of appropriate training aids and guidelines for educating, training and certifying operators and inspectors.
