Book excerpt: The considerations involved in combining data compression and error control coding in space telemetry are analyzed through the use of two performance measures, D and R, which are similar to those measures used by Shannon for his rate distortion function. The average distortion D is a function of the source probability distribution, the overall system transitional probability matrix, and a cost matrix which signifies the relative importance of different types of data errors. The rate-ratio R is the reciprocal of the overall system compression ratio and includes the data expansion effect of additional timing data, identification data, and coding redundancy. Different schemes for supplying the timing information in a compressed system are analyzed and compared. A new timing scheme is developed which requires, on the average, fewer time words for a large class of data sources. A method is developed for uniquely encoding and decoding an entire sequence of time words for compressed data, utilizing the strict monotonicity of the sequence. The effects of the following system parameters and properties on the overall distortion and rate-ratio are analyzed: the error-control usefulness of natural data redundancy, errors in time information, the error-control usefulness of time word monotonicity, the probability distribution of the source, the bit-error probability of a binary symmetric channel, and the word compression ratio. A rationale for comparing and choosing among three systems--uncompressed-uncoded, compressed-uncoded, and compressed-coded--is given in terms of the performance measures D and R.

Book excerpt: With the development of new advanced instruments for remote sensing applications, sensor data will be generated at a rate that not only requires increased onboard processing and storage capability, but imposes demands on the space to ground communication link and ground data management-communication system. Data compression and error control codes provide viable means to alleviate these demands. Two types of data compression have been studied by many researchers in the area of information theory: a lossless technique that guarantees full reconstruction of the data, and a lossy technique which generally gives higher data compaction ratio but incurs some distortion in the reconstructed data. To satisfy the many science disciplines which NASA supports, lossless data compression becomes a primary focus for the technology development. While transmitting the data obtained by any lossless data compression, it is very important to use some error-control code. For a long time, convolutional codes have been widely used in satellite telecommunications. To more efficiently transform the data obtained by the Rice algorithm, it is required to meet the a posteriori probability (APP) for each decoded bit. A relevant algorithm for this purpose has been proposed which minimizes the bit error probability in the decoding linear block and convolutional codes and meets the APP for each decoded bit. However, recent results on iterative decoding of 'Turbo codes', turn conventional wisdom on its head and suggest fundamentally new techniques. During the past several months of this research, the following approaches have been developed: (1) a new lossless data compression algorithm, which is much better than the extended Rice algorithm for various types of sensor data, (2) a new approach to determine the generalized Hamming weights of the algebraic-geometric codes defined by a large class of curves in high-dimensional spaces, (3) some efficient improved geometric Goppa codes for disk memory s...

Book excerpt: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has developed a method of applying data compression to the pulse coded modulation (PCM) telemetry bit stream from Apollo spacecraft. The compression could be applied to the data transmission on the link between the Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN) sites and Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to give a savings in realized telephone cable capacity and to transmit more information to Mission Control. The method of data transmission developed permits all the data in the 51.2 kbps bit stream from the Command Service Module (CSM) or the Lunar Module (LM) to be sent in real time over two 2.4-kbps voice-data-quality telephone lines. Very basically, the system uses a zero order predictor with a variable window to screen out redundant data; run length encoding is used to encode the location sequence, and '2-9' encoding is used to encode the data values. Combining these two coding schemes results in 88 bits per frame, on the average. This technique requires modification of the present computer software only; it does not require any hardware changes.
