Book excerpt: Nothingness addresses one of the most puzzling problems of physics and philosophy: Does empty space have an existence independent of the matter within it? Is "empty space" really empty, or is it an ocean seething with the creation and destruction of virtual matter? With crystal-clear prose and more than 100 cleverly rendered illustrations, physicist Henning Genz takes the reader from the metaphysical speculations of the ancient Greek philosophers, through the theories of Newton and the early experiments of his contemporaries, right up to the current theories of quantum physics and cosmology to give us the story of one of the most fundamental and puzzling areas of modern physics and philosophy.

Book excerpt: Mission X was created after the coma and near-death experience of journalist and author Uwe H. Sueltz. Without the quick action of his partner Renate Sueltz he would have died. More science fiction short stories have been slumbering in the minds of the author team for decades. About the writing team: Renate Sueltz writes children's books, poetry, cookbooks, short novels and short stories. Renate Sueltz was among others. employed in an advertising agency. There she was responsible for poster designs, as well as web design. She also worked in nursing and was trained here. She was responsible for patient care and support, as well as team organization and leadership. Uwe H. Sültz also writes under different pseudonyms. The list of all genres and subgenres is long. To show that one can make a difference with diligent work, Sültz invested in a dilapidated and run-down doctor's practice, managed it and led the laboratory. He returned the doctor's practice after a short, intensive time in the profit zone and saved so many jobs. He has also worked freelance for a TV station (accreditation). His journalistic contributions included the following Topics: - Art and culture - Car & Traffic - Sports & Entertainment - Nature & Travel - Science and research - Politics & Current Affairs - Business & Management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix OCo together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. This invaluable book outlines the development of double beta research from its beginnings until its most recent achievements, and also presents the outlook for its highly exciting future. Contents: Double Beta Decay OCo Historical Retrospective and Perspectives; Original Articles: From the Early Days until the Gauge Theory Era; The Nuclear Physics Side OCo Nuclear Matrix Elements; The Nuclear Physics Side OCo Nuclear Matrix Elements; Effective Neutrino Masses from Double Beta Decay, Neutrino Mass Models and Cosmological Parameters OCo Present Status and Prospects; Other Beyond Standard Model Physics: From SUSY and Leptoquarks to Compositeness and Quantum Foam; The Experimental Race: From the Late Eighties to the Future; The Future of Double Beta Decay; Appendices: Ten Years of HeidelbergOCoMoscow Experiment; The Potential Future OCo GENIUS. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened before the big bang? How did the smallest building blocks of life and matter develop? Do thinking corporeal beings of the higher spiritual order, for example humans, have an ego-consciousness on the basis of the law of conservation of energy? Where does the cycle of cosmic life close? Is there a purpose why the universal world exists in its entirety? And for the fact that it is set up as it is? Is there such a thing as god or gods? As they are called on some habitable planets? And if so, what should we know about him or her? Are they possibly a product of spiritual fantasy of thinking, physical beings of the higher spiritual order as a means of developing and maintaining power? What distinguishes the species of thinking corporeal beings of the higher spiritual order? Is there such a thing as the spiritual, especially a fundamental difference between spirit and matter?

Despite the high level of specialisation required for remaining internationally competitive in cutting-edge research, physics at TU Vienna nevertheless covers a remarkably broad range of topics that can be roughly divided into three core areas: the physics of matter, physical technology and fundamental interactions. This volume is intended to give the non-specialised reader an impression of the outstanding research and teaching done at the Faculty of Physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the statement that crude oil and natural gas are running out has a profound influence on the world economic strategies and on world politics as well as on the future of all humankind. But is this scientific conception of the world totally wrong? This is a must-read book! The renewed interest in the planets that resulted during the 2000s from the space probe investigations caused by Hans-Joachim Zillmer to think about the origin of planetary bodies and the various volatile substances of their atmospheres. Scientists are surprised and have no lucid explanation that abundant hydrocarbons even occur on comets and as already proofed on other planets or its moons. In this book is described that this volatile substances on planetary bodies are not of biology origin. These inorganic components of the Earth's mantle are continually out gassing toward the surface by geological and mechanical forces. Our planet would be replete with methane and we are not running out of petroleum? The energy crises would be over. There are many other reasons for wanting to understand the principle of operation of our solar system with the energy supply of planetary bodies. Suppose someone claimed that life on Earth started below the surface of our planet and if we find extraterrestrial life it is likely to be within, but not on, other planets. Darwin's theory of macroevolution must be rewritten. This heretic science book rejects the ideas of conventional geology, geophysics and astronomy, but instead demonstrates in layman's terms how the Earth originated and where the continents, the ocean and the atmosphere came from. This highly exciting and controversial German bestselling book The Energy Mistake shows that the history of Earth must also be replaced. We see a brilliant thinker as he develops a revolutionary view about the fundamental workings of our planet and the solar systems. This is a must-read book

Book excerpt: God, Life, and the Cosmos: Christian and Islamic Perspectives is the first book in which Christian and Muslim scholars explore the frontiers of science-religion discourse. Leading international scholars present new work on key issues in science and religion from Christian and Islamic perspectives. Following an introduction by the editors, the book is divided into three sections: the first explores the philosophical issues in science-religion discourse; the second examines cosmology; the third analyses the issues surrounding bioethics. One of the first books to explore aspects of science-religion discourse from the perspective of two religious traditions, God, Life, and the Cosmos opens up new vistas to all interested in science and religion, and those exploring contemporary issues in Christianity and Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For us humans the question of the temporal end of our existence is of great importance. The answer that faith seeks is not the task and goal of this book, but the rational answer. The author remains on the ground of science and soberly examines how far we can reveal the mystery of the temporal end and answer the question from the scientific facts and from the standpoint of logical thinking: Is there life after life? But what can science contribute to a subject that is otherwise occupied by philosophy and the various faiths? The answer is: very much! For in natural science there are the extremely strange phenomena of quantum physics, which, despite their oddity, have the potential to shed light on those areas that philosophy has not yet been able to illuminate. In the end, there is confidence and the light of knowledge about the liberation of consciousness from the shackles of time.
