Welche unterschiedlichen Arten von Begriffen gibt es und welche Information enthält eine Definition? In welchem Verhältnis stehen die verschiedenen Elemente, die man für die Sozialforschung braucht, zueinander? Fragen dieser Art sollen in einem ersten Schritt behandelt werden, sodass der Forscher bzw. die Forscherin eine Vorstellung davon bekommt, was man für eine angehende Untersuchung im Vorfeld wissen sollte. Bevor jedoch eine empirische Sozialforschung starten kann, braucht jeder Wissenschaftler und jede Wissenschaftlerin zusätzlich einen Konsens darüber, wie die Planung und der darauffolgende Ablauf einer empirischen Untersuchung zu gestalten sind. Welche Phasen gilt es zu beachten? Welche Entscheidungen müssen vorab getroffen werden und welche Fragen müssen primär geklärt werden? Gerade wo an die Stelle eines bestimmten Begriffs von Gesellschaft die unbestimmte Metapher der »Globalisierung« getreten ist, setzt sich ein verdinglichtes, gesellschaftliche Verhältnisse individualisierendes und fetischisierendes Bewußtsein durch, das die Bewußtlosigkeit seiner Gesellschaftlichkeit ideologisch verdoppelt. Eine Theorie der Gesellschaft, die ihrem Begriff entspricht, ist nur als kritische Theorie möglich, was heißt, sie ist kritisch nur als immanent ansetzende, die gegebene Gesellschaft transzendierende Theorie, die die Differenz zwischen Sein und Schein, Selbstverständnis und Selbsttäuschung, Realität und Utopie freilegt: So ist sie Krisentheorie, Theorie des gesellschaftlichen Widerspruchs von existierender Unvernunft und utopischem Vernunftanspruch, von Irrationalität und Rationalität, von Verdinglichung und vernünftiger Transzendenz. Dabei steht das kritische Bewußtsein nicht neben dem unkritischen, etwa der fachsoziologischen empirischen Forschung, sondern geht von diesem aus, um es zu überschreiten. Der Text entstand parallel zu einer umfangreichen, vom Autor durchgeführten empirischen Untersuchung. Da in der Theorie der Gesellschaft eine vom Inhalt abgelöste Forschungsmethode nicht zu haben ist, geht es nicht um Forschungsanleitungen, sondern um Reflexionen zum Verhältnis von Gesellschaftstheorie und Empirie, die notwendig mit der Klärung substantieller, inhaltlicher Fragen verbunden sind.
