Doch genau mit dieser ersten Begegnung treffen auch gleich zwei verschiedene "Welten" aufeinander. Man wird aus dem familiären Umfeld, in dem man sich kennt, liebt und un-terstützt, gerissen und sitzt nun mit fremden Menschen in unbekannten Räumen zusammen, in denen man Dinge lernen soll, ohne die man prima die letzten Jahre ausgekommen ist. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, worin genau die Unterschiede zwischen fami-liärem Umfeld und dem der Schule liegen, woher diese stammen und welche Auswirkun-gen sie auf die schulische Laufbahn haben können. Der erste, allgemeine Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich zunächst mit offensichtlichen Un-terschieden, um daran anknüpfend die einzelnen Beziehungsebenen der Beteiligten spezifi-scher zu beleuchten. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit geht der selbstgewählten Fragestellung nach, ob Kinder und Jugendliche aus Familien mit Migrationshintergrund in besonderer Weise von den zuvor erarbeiteten Differenzen betroffen sind. Sie verfolgt das Ziel, die Forschungsarbeiten im Bereich der interkulturellen Pädagogik bezüglich des Schulerfolgs von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund zu durchleuchten und die Erklärungsfaktoren dessen aufzuzeigen. Um dem für die Schweiz typischen, föderalen Bildungssystem gerecht zu werden, sollen vor allem dort, wo es notwendig ist, Schweizer Studien im Vordergrund stehen. Je nach Themenfeld werden aber auch internationale Forschungsergebnisse dargelegt. Im Zentrum der Analyse sollen einerseits jene Faktoren stehen, auf welche die Lehrpersonen durch ihre Tätigkeit direkt Einfluss nehmen können. Andererseits finden auch die nicht-direkt beeinflussbaren Faktoren Einzug in die Studie, um den Lehrpersonen die ganze Palette an Fördermöglichkeiten – auch die ausserschulischen – aufzuzeigen und näher zu bringen. Schlussendlich erweitern auch diese Faktoren die interkulturelle Kompetenz der Lehrkräfte, welche für die Gestaltung von Unterricht in multikulturellen Klassen und die optimale, sprich gleichberechtigte Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen aus anderen Kultur- und Sprachkreisen unabdingbar ist. Da nach den neuesten Erkenntnissen aus der sozialpsychologischen und interkulturellen Forschung die Sprachförderung und insbesondere die Erstsprachförderung als wesentlicher Faktor des Schulerfolges von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund herausgeht (vgl. Müller 1997, Schader / Haenni Hoti 2006, Caprez 2007), wird dieser in der Studie besondere Berücksichtigung finden. Die Literaturstudie möchte somit den von vielen Seiten so oft erwähnten Schwierigkeiten in multikulturellen Schulen und Problemen mit „Ausländerkindern“ eine breite Palette von Fördermöglichkeiten und in der Schweiz vorhandene, alternative Modelle gegenüber stellen. On the one hand, this extension involves a consideration of the role of evolutionary biological processes; on the other, it pertains to the broader ecology of human development—the social network lying outside the family, and the physical environmental contexts of development. Person-context reciprocities linked to variables that may play their greatest role in the extrafamilial context are also considered. Variables such as physical attractiveness, race, and physical handicap are examples of those discussed in this regard. Finally, because of the greater scope of the analysis, a potentially greater data base is examined in a search for documentation of the presence and role of dynamic person-context interactions.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?

Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being.
