Ist es aber gesät, dann geht es auf [...].“ (Mk 4,31.32) Lohnt es sich, das Senfkorn Jugendkirche zu säen? Die Zukunft der Katholischen Kirche hängt am seidenen Faden. Die Religiosität der Menschen befindet sich in einem starken Wandel. Für viele Menschen verliert die Kirche immer mehr an Bedeutung. Heutzutage beginnt das Abwenden bereits im Jugendalter, wie viele Studien beweisen. Deshalb ist die kirchliche Jugendarbeit heut mehr denn je gefordert und elementar. Sie hat es sich seit circa 20 Jahren zur Aufgabe gemacht, eine innovative Kirchenform zu entwickeln. Sozusagen eine Kirche für die Jugend und von der Jugend. Das experimentelle Konzept nennt sich Jugendkirche und wurde in Deutschland bereits 106 Mal in katholischen Diözesen realisiert. Dieses noch recht junge Projekt soll den Mittelpunkt dieser wissenschaftlichen Abhandlung darstellen. Nach 20 Jahren des Erprobens ist es an der Zeit, eine Bilanz zu ziehen vor dem Hintergrund der Fragestellung: Ist Jugendkirche ein gelungenes Konzept um Kirche wieder für Jugendliche interessant zu machen? Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit wird die aktuelle Situation der Religiosität Jugendlicher, sowie deren Wandel mittels verschiedener bestehender Studien beleuchtet und begründet. Es soll vor diesem Kontext dargestellt werden, warum es zu einer Idee von einer Kirche speziell für Jugendliche gekommen ist. In einem nächsten Schritt (Kapitel 3) werden Ideen und Ansätze für die Realisierung einer Jugendkirche zusammengestellt. In Kapitel 4 wird beschrieben, wie Jugendkirchen organisiert sein können und wie sie sich von der „veralteten“ Kirche abgrenzt. Um zu einem wissenschaftlich fundierten Ergebnis der Fragestellung zu kommen, werden in Kapitel 5 Expertenmeinungen aus verschiedenen Professionen (Theologie, Sozialwissenschaften) und somit aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Blickwinkeln vorgestellt, bevor es zum Kernpunkt, der Befragung von jugendlichen Teilnehmern der Jugendkirchen, kommt. Mittels einer quantitativen empirischen Online-Umfrage und in Kooperation mit drei verschiedenen katholischen Jugendkirchen, soll festgestellt werden, ob das Konzept Jugendkirche aus Sicht der betroffenen Jugendlichen ein Erfolgreiches ist und ob somit das Ziel der kirchlichen Jugendarbeit, erreicht wurde. Die sinkenden Mitgliederzahlen und die damit geringeren Einnahmen zwingen die Kirche zum Sparen. Die Frage ist naturlich, was Kirche in der heutigen Zeit fehlt, warum immer mehr Mitglieder aus der Kirche austreten. Diese Frage ist ein sehr komplexes und umfangreiches Thema, das ich in dieser Arbeit auf die Zielgruppe der Jugendlichen einschranke. Auch bei Jugendlichen ist zu beobachten, dass sich immer weniger fur Kirche interessieren. Im sonntaglichen Gottesdienst sind sie eher die Ausnahme. Einige Kirchenkreise oder auch Landeskirchen haben diese Problematik erkannt und sogenannte Jugendkirchen ins Leben gerufen, die der Tatsache entgegenwirken sollen. In dieser Arbeit soll geklart werden, was eine Jugendkirche ist und vor allen Dingen was sie von der klassischen Kirche unterscheidet. Die bereits bestehenden Projekte haben einen grossen Zulauf, sie haben sich bei diesen Jugendlichen etabliert. Es soll auch aufgezeigt werden, worin die Faszination bei den Jugendlichen liegt. Der erste Teil der Arbeit befasst sich theoretisch mit dem Konzept Jugendkirche, der zweite Teil verdeutlicht die Theorie anhand der Vorstellung konkreter Praxismodelle. Das zweite Kapitel dieser Arbeit betrachtet zunachst die veranderten Lebensbedingungen der heutigen Jugendlichen und wieweit der Begriff Jugendlicher eigentlich gefasst werden muss. Auch ihre Bedurfnisse in Bezug auf Religion werden in diesem Kapitel bearbeitet. Die kirchlichen Strukturen werden beleuchtet und es wird uberpruft, ob sie den Bedurfnissen der heutigen Jugend entsprechen. Im dritten Kapitel wird das Konzept Jugendkirche konkretisiert. Hier geht es um eine allgemeine Darstellung, was ein solches Konzept leisten muss. Zunachst wird hierzu die Spannung zwischen Jugendkultur und Kirchenkultur anhand konkreter Beispiele aufgezeigt. Book excerpt: The mainline church in the past few decades has witnessed a ghettoization of youth within the church, segregating them off to a particular room, perhaps in the basement, where they engage in ministry in isolation from the rest of the congregation. They are assigned a “youth minister” or “youth director,” often the staff person with the least experience, freeing up the “real” ministers to serve the adults in the church. They seldom serve on church boards or governing bodies in anything other than a cursory manner. Their leadership in worship is limited to one special Sunday a year; their activities seen more as programming than ministry, and their place often described as “the church of the future” rather than the body of Christ in the here-and-now. For decades, youth ministry in mainline churches has been program-driven, assuming that the primary function of youth ministry was to use activities and events to attract young people to church and keep them occupied until they were ready to be adult members in the faith. In recent years, it has become increasingly obvious that this paradigm has failed to develop youth as life-long participants in the Christian church and in the Christian faith. The result of such a model of ministry is that youth come to see church only as those segregated activities reserved for teenagers, most of which bear little resemblance to the practices of the rest of church life. Consequently, when youth graduate from high school and youth group, they perceive that their most meaningful church experiences are ended. Mainline congregations are now seeing the evidence of the real lack of impact of their youth ministries as the population of young adults in churches continues to shrink – even those young adults who were once regular participants in church youth group programs. In short, the program-driven model of youth ministry has failed to help youth find their place within the mission of the Church. Rethinking Youth Ministry critiques this older paradigm and invites the reader into a dialogue to help rethink many of the deepest assumptions of youth ministry in the mainline church. We challenge the consumerist goal of judging a youth ministry’s success by the number of its participants. We push back against the notion that a youth ministry is the sum total of the events on the calendar. We rethink the place of volunteers and parents, calling for a greater role of adults as spiritual mentors in the lives of church youth. We send out a call for greater understanding of modern methods of teaching and the impact of brain research on the intellectual and spiritual development of youth and we re-imagine a new role for mission within youth ministry which calls youth to see mission not as isolated activities but as the very heart of their faith journey.
