Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Writings written by Vilem Flusser and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2002-04-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after his death, Vilém Flusser’s reputation as one of Europe’s most original modern philosophers continues to grow. Increasingly influential in Europe and Latin America, the Prague-born intellectual’s thought has until now remained largely unknown in the English-speaking world. His innovative writings theorize—and ultimately embrace—the epochal shift that humanity is undergoing from what he termed "linear thinking" (based on writing) toward a new form of multidimensional, visual thinking embodied by digital culture. For Flusser, these new modes and technologies of communication make possible a society (the "telematic" society) in which dialogue between people becomes the supreme value. The first English-language anthology of Flusser’s work, this volume displays the extraordinary range and subtlety of his intellect. A number of the essays collected here introduce and elaborate his theory of communication, influenced by thinkers as diverse as Martin Buber, Edmund Husserl, and Thomas Kuhn. While taking dystopian, posthuman visions of communication technologies into account, Flusser celebrates their liberatory and humanizing aspects. For Flusser, existence was akin to being thrown into an abyss of absurd experience or "bottomlessness;" becoming human required creating meaning out of this painful event by consciously connecting with others, in part through such technologies. Other essays present Flusser’s thoughts on the future of writing, the revolutionary nature of photography, the relationship between exile and creativity, and his unconventional concept of posthistory. Taken together, these essays confirm Flusser’s importance and prescience within contemporary philosophy.
Download or read book Maschinenbewusstsein written by Ralf Otte and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Intelligente Technologien. Die Zuschreibung von Bewusstsein bei Maschinen by : Gordon Welzel
Download or read book Intelligente Technologien. Die Zuschreibung von Bewusstsein bei Maschinen written by Gordon Welzel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Camera-Eye Metaphor in Cinema by : Christian Quendler
Download or read book The Camera-Eye Metaphor in Cinema written by Christian Quendler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the cultural, intellectual, and artistic fascination with camera-eye metaphors in film culture of the twentieth century. By studying the very metaphor that cinema lives by, it provides a rich and insightful map of our understanding of cinema and film styles and shows how cinema shapes our understanding of the arts and media. As current new media technologies are attempting to shift the identity of cinema and moving imagery, it is hard to overstate the importance of this metaphor for our understanding of the modalities of vision. In what guises does the "camera eye" continue to survive in media that is called new?

Book Synopsis Organization as Communication by : Steffen Blaschke
Download or read book Organization as Communication written by Steffen Blaschke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that communication constitutes organization (CCO) provides a unique perspective to organization studies by highlighting the fundamental and formative role of communication for organizational phenomena of various kinds. The book features original works that address the idea of organization as communication in the light of other theories, related concepts, as well as the tension between strategy and emergence. The first set of chapters discusses the idea of organization communication in the light of critical works of European scholars (Habermas, Honneth, and Günther). The second set of chapters reflects on a range of concepts such as institutions, routines, and leadership from a CCO perspective. The final set of chapters examines the tension between strategic and emergent communication by drawing on new methodology and empirical evidence. The chapters are set into dialogue with some of the most prominent proponents of CCO scholarship. The book offers an important contribution to CCO thinking by adding European perspectives on organization as communication. It connects the primarily North American approach and European traditions of theoretical thought to existing debates in communication and organization studies.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche and Transhumanism by : Stefan Lorenz Sorgner
Download or read book Nietzsche and Transhumanism written by Stefan Lorenz Sorgner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay collection deals with the question of whether Nietzsche can be seen as a precursor of transhumanism or not. Debates on the topic have existed for some years, particularly in the Journal of Evolution and Technology and The Agonist. This book combines existing papers, from these journals, with new material, to highlight some of the important issues surrounding this argument. The collection addresses a variety of issues to show whether or not there is a close connection between transhumanist concerns for progress and technology and Nietzsche’s ideas.
Book Synopsis A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research by : Pierre Marquis
Download or read book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research written by Pierre Marquis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of AI research, ranging from basic work to interfaces and applications, with as much emphasis on results as on current issues. It is aimed at an audience of master students and Ph.D. students, and can be of interest as well for researchers and engineers who want to know more about AI. The book is split into three volumes: - the first volume brings together twenty-three chapters dealing with the foundations of knowledge representation and the formalization of reasoning and learning (Volume 1. Knowledge representation, reasoning and learning) - the second volume offers a view of AI, in fourteen chapters, from the side of the algorithms (Volume 2. AI Algorithms) - the third volume, composed of sixteen chapters, describes the main interfaces and applications of AI (Volume 3. Interfaces and applications of AI). Implementing reasoning or decision making processes requires an appropriate representation of the pieces of information to be exploited. This first volume starts with a historical chapter sketching the slow emergence of building blocks of AI along centuries. Then the volume provides an organized overview of different logical, numerical, or graphical representation formalisms able to handle incomplete information, rules having exceptions, probabilistic and possibilistic uncertainty (and beyond), as well as taxonomies, time, space, preferences, norms, causality, and even trust and emotions among agents. Different types of reasoning, beyond classical deduction, are surveyed including nonmonotonic reasoning, belief revision, updating, information fusion, reasoning based on similarity (case-based, interpolative, or analogical), as well as reasoning about actions, reasoning about ontologies (description logics), argumentation, and negotiation or persuasion between agents. Three chapters deal with decision making, be it multiple criteria, collective, or under uncertainty. Two chapters cover statistical computational learning and reinforcement learning (other machine learning topics are covered in Volume 2). Chapters on diagnosis and supervision, validation and explanation, and knowledge base acquisition complete the volume.
