Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwiniana Essays, Vol. 2 As I have said in the seventh essay, the fact of evolution is to my mind sufficiently evidenced by palaeontology and I remain of the opinion ex pressed in the second, that until selective breeding is defimtely proved to give rise to varreties infertile with one another, the logical foundation of the theory of natural selectiomis incomplete. We still remain very much in the dark-about the causes of variation; the apparent inheritance of acquii ed characters in some cases; and the struggle for existence within the organism, which probably lies at the bottom of both of these phenomena. If it be objected that some of these pages are written in a lightness of vein not quite congruous with the gravity of the subject and the seriousness of its issues, the excuse must be that they were written with perfect freedom, most of them as anonymous contributions to popular journals, and that an argu ment may not be the less sound or an exposition less effective for being playful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwiniana Essays, Vol. 2 I have entitled this volume "Darwiniana" because the pieces republished in it either treat of the ancient doctrine of Evolution, rehabilitated and placed upon a sound scientific foundation, since and in consequence of, the publication of the "Origin of Species;" or they attempt to meet the more weighty of the unsparing criticisms with which that great work was visited for several years after its appearance; or they record the impression left by the personality of Mr. Darwin on one who had the privilege and the happiness of enjoying his friendship for some thirty years; or they endeavour to sum up his work and indicate its enduring influence on the course of scientific thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms, Vol. 2 of 2 Although we are unable to agree entirely with Mr. Darwin in this remark, it none the less contains an undoubted truth. \ve cannot agree, because we feel that a false theory which keenly solicits the imagination, put forward by a writer widely and deservedly esteemed, and which reposes on a multitude of facts difficult to verify, skilfully interwoven, and exceedingly hard to unravel, is likely to be very prejudicial to science. Nevertheless, science cannot make progress with out the action of two distinct classes of thinkers: the first consisting of men of creative genius, who strike out brilliant hypotheses, and who may be spoken of as theorisers' in the good sense of the word; the second, of men possessed of the critical faculty, and who test, mould into shape, perfect or destroy, the hypotheses thrown out by the former class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwinism: And Other Essays It is not often that the propounder of a new and startling scientific theory has lived to see his daring innovations accepted by the scientific world in general. Harvey's great discovery of the circulation of the blood was scoffed at for nearly a whole generation; and Newtons law of gravitation, though proved by the strictest mathematical proof, received from many eminent men but a slow and grudging acquiescence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genius of Erasmus Darwin provides insight into the full extent of Erasmus Darwin's exceptional intellect. He is shown to be a major creative thinker and innovator, one of the minds behind the late eighteenth-century industrial revolution, and one of the first, if not the first, to perceive the living world (including humans) as part of a unified evolutionary scenario. The contributions here provide contextual understandings of Erasmus Darwin's thought, as well as studies of particular works and accounts of the later reception of his writings. In this way it is possible to see why the young Samuel Taylor Coleridge was moved to describe Darwin as 'the first literary character in Europe, and the most original-minded man'.Erasmus Darwin, Charles Darwin's grandfather, was one of the leading intellectuals of eighteenth-century England. He was a man with an extraordinary range of interests and activities: he was a doctor, biologist, inventor, poet, linguist and botanist. He was also a founding member of the Lunar Society, an intellectual community that included such eminent men as James Watt and Josiah Wedgwood.

This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Darwin was a well-known English geologist and naturalist. He is best known for his scientific theories and contributions to evolutionary theory. Arguably his most important work was his essay entitled "On the Origin of Species" which essay argued that populations of species evolve through generations as a result of the process of natural selection. His two book series entitled The Variations of Animals and Plants Under Domestication offers profound insight into the beliefs and evidence that established the basis for Darwin's work on evolution and the study of biology. The domestication of animals and the domestication of plants is thoroughly explored in this book, along with Darwin's theory of heredity which discusses the passing of traits from parents or ancestor onto offspring. This theory was termed, and may be more popularly known as, pangenesis. Darwin's work with heredity is known across the globe, as he established that all species have descended, over time, from common ancestors. This concept links back to his work on natural selection as each new branch of offspring evolves beyond the traits of the common ancestor. The Variations of Animals and Plants Under Domestication is an intriguing book for anyone interested in Charles Darwin and his work on biology and evolution theory. For those interested in domestication and naturalism, this book is a must read, but it's also highly recommended for scholars of science and students of history as the book gives an exciting glimpse into a special period in time when evolutionary theories were the cutting-edge of scientific study. Book excerpt: Throughout the 19th century in the British Empire, parallel developments in science and the law were squeezing Aborigines everywhere into nonexistence. Charles Darwin took part in this. Again and again, he expressed his approval of the extermination of the native lower races. The more interesting part of the story is that there were plenty of voices, albeit a minority and mostly forgotten now, who objected on humanitarian grounds (and sometimes scientific grounds as well). Europeans, they said, were becoming polished savages and dehumanizing the Other. Darwin was very aware of this criticism and cared not one whit. As he said in a letter to Charles Lyell, I care not much whether we are looked at as mere savages in a remotely distant future. But he well knew it was not a remote future. He had read several writers who accused Europeans of being the real savages. For a brief moment in his youth in his Diary, he himself dabbled in such criticism, even though he already believed in the inferiority of indigenous peoples. That belief grew firmer as he matured. Darwin did not dispute humanitarians so much as he ignored them. Its a sad story. But oh those humanitarians, how they inspire.
