Book excerpt: Part autobiographical, the stories offer a depiction of the myriad world of jaded entrepreneurs, overzealous cops, karaoke fanatics, dog lovers, liberated coeds, and frustrated urbanites who move in and out of China's colorful neon-lit cities and dusty rural villages; transitioning from one world to the other. Red Guard Fantasies can be viewed as a corollary to the work of noted classical Chinese writers such as Pu Songling (1640-1715) and Wu Jingzi (1701-1754), who challenged ideas of Chinese society and culture through the use of allegory, satire, and the blending of realistic and fantastic elements, often leading the reader through a dream-like, fantasy state where the real and the surreal become one.

Book excerpt: A much-awaited collection of prose and poetry from one of the great cosmic masters of the supernatural Not just any fantasy, horror, and science fiction author could impress H. P. Lovecraft into calling him “unexcelled by any other writer, dead or living” or compel Fritz Lieber to employ the worthy term sui generis. Clark Ashton Smith—autodidact, prolific poet, amateur philosopher, bizarre sculptor, and unmatched storyteller—simply wrote like no one else, before or since. This new collection of his very best tales and poems is selected and introduced by supernatural literature scholar S. T. Joshi and allows readers to encounter Smith’s visionary brand of fantastical, phantasmagorical worlds, each one filled with invention, terror, and a superlative sense of metaphysical wonder. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: This short story collection will keep you on the edge of your seat to the last sentence. Misha Burnett has been published in a wide variety of modern fiction magazines, and here we've collected some of his best work. From the introduction: "I'm a tourist, not a colonist. I want to take a couple of pictures, hit an antique mall, get a meal, and get back on the highway. And that's what I write--what you'll get in this book is the casual visitor's view of other worlds than ours. I promise to have you back safe in your own home town by nightfall. "That having been said, I do revisit the same locations several times. These nine stories are trips to four settings, more or less. I like to think that these worlds are interesting enough to warrant the return trips. The first two stories, "A Hill Of Stars" and "In The Gloaming O My Darling" are set in what I like to call the Eldritch Earth. Early pulp writers were often fascinated by great antiquity, and I share that fascination. So I basically took Robert Howard's prehistoric Cimmeria and pushed it back in time--waaay back, all the way to Lovecraft's Precambrian Era of elder gods and alien monstrosities. "It's a mashup of time periods, with human beings and dinosaurs and shoggoths all existing on the same Pangaea-style continent. The concept has both obvious absurdities and an odd charm, and I was able to convince a few other authors to take a stab at the setting. "The next story, "Nox Invictus" is a one-off. The germ of the idea came from a discussion of elves in Fantasy being avatars of chaos, with the lawlessness of Elfland contrasted with the order of Christendom in works such as Poul Anderson's Three Hearts And Three Lions. I happened to be reading the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius at the time, so I thought I'd see how a Roman Stoic would fare in the realm of the fair folk--specifically the Svartalfheim of Norse mythology. "It was fun, writing the clash of three very different cultures, the civilized Empire, the Celtic barbarians, and the decadent Dark Elves. I hope you enjoy the trip. "The next stop on our itinerary doesn't have an official name, but the three stories "Candlemass Night", "Conessa's Sword", and "Through Dry Places" are all set in the same world. It's about the closest that I've written to a "typical" Fantasy world--vaguely Central European, vaguely Medieval. Adventurers from a Dungeons & Dragons campaign would feel at home here. The stories do have an Ashkenazi flavor--it's influenced by my love of Russian Jewish folklore and the places are more Anatevka than Lankhmar. "Next stop, Dracoheim. The last three stories, "She That Was So Proud And Wild," "The Hopeful Bodies Of The Young," and "An Interrupted Scandal" are set in the same Fantasy city. It's different than most Urban Fantasy, though, in that it isn't modern Earth with the addition of fantastic elements but instead a Fantasy world that has "grown up" into modern technology. Well, relatively modern, anyway--say mid-20th Century."

This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the godfather of modern horror, weird fiction, and fantasy, an inestimable influence on Poe, Dickens, and Hawthorne, de Maupassant, Stevenson, and James, left his fingerprints on "Frankenstein," "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," "Dracula," and "The Turn of the Screw," and inspired filmmakers from Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan to David Lynch and Fritz Lang (and films from "Dr. Caligari" and "Metropolis" to "The Matrix" and "Mulholland Drive"). Yet few horror fans have ever read his works. Many have never even heard his name. Today he is most famous for writing the dark fantasy that Tchaikovsky fluffed up into "The Nutcracker" and for his proto-Freudian masterpiece of existential terror, "The Sandman," but his influence demands that we give E. T. A. Hoffmann a much closer look. An expert at blending the ordinary and the uncanny, his stories were some of the first to feature supernatural invaders in a contemporary setting. Unlike Perrault or the Grimms, his macabre fairy tales aren't in a land "far, far away" or "once upon a time" - they take place in the sooty, bourgeois streets of his own time, and involve grotesque and often malformed agents of chaos piercing through the veil of the invisible world to introduce moral mayhem into the bland existence of bored daydreamers. In Hoffmann's worlds, the "real" world is the fake one - like in "The Matrix" or "Alice in Wonderland" - a superficial façade distracting us from recognizing the wonders and horrors of true reality. Tremendously complex and literary, his gothic stories, dark fairy tales, and diabolical parables explore the relationships between reality and fantasy, reason and imagination, submission and inspiration, groundedness and sublimity, and spirituality and materiality. His stories include tales of castles haunted by family curses, toys brought to life, erotic robots, sinister salesmen with malevolent motives, demonic Doppelgangers, cannibalistic pregnant women, lustful gnomes, hypnotic seducers, sleepwalking ghosts, men without shadows or reflections, and expansive worlds hidden behind the drab exterior of the ordinary prefiguring Hogwarts, Narnia, Wonderland, and Oz. His tales are famous for their blend of horror and allure, of ugliness and beauty, of reality and imagination. The swirl with the vertigo of a rich grasp of fantasy, darkened with inappropriate lusts, repressed urges, and unconscious motives. Deeply psychological and profoundly philosophical, they will shock and offend, but they will also soothe and inspire. These are the Tales of Hoffmann.

These will be a little light relief from the razor edged terrors in other stories such as 'The Island of the Seals' and 'Nobody Thinks He's A Bad Guy'. She has a way of depicting torture and cruelty, often with a sharp eye on the humanitarian issues. These are dark stories indeed, told with just the right dollop of horror to thoroughly unnerve the reader. And if you want ghosts and mythical beings, there's 'Cat's Cradle' and 'Over My Dead Body', each of them unnerving in their own way. Samantha Lee's output is as diverse as it is prolific, covering both fact and fiction and including novels in the science fiction and dark fantasy genres, self-development and exercise books, short stories and articles, TV series and movie screenplays, literary criticism and poetry. Her genre novels include the best selling Point Horror imprint titles "Demon," "Demon II," "Amy," "The Belltower" and "The Bogle."

Book excerpt: Heaven, Purgatory and Hell, the three realms of the afterlife. Agents from each side try to manipulate Man, making it do things it wouldn't normally do, to influence its final destination. All to get more souls and gain an advantage in the Eternal War. I can't accept it. It isn't fair for the place of eternal rest (or torment) of a person to be determined by what a third party led it to do. And I fight to prevent it. An old local legend makes me suspect that the angels of Viana do Castelo are not splitting the souls of the newly dead as mandated by law. This is the story of my attempt to discover and stop them. This is one of the short stories included in the anthology "The Saga of Me - Divine Justice" by the same author. You can find it in all major eBook retailers.

Playing with his doppelganger, Godfrey, he looks back on life in Harare, and in Zimbabwe, over the last decade, exploring it from a familial perspective. How does a father cope with a rebellious daughter or a wife he perceives as wayward? How does one mediate traditional gender roles? What to do when status in the form of a car undermines the stability of a marriage? How does one manage a friendship with a new farmer? What moral compromises are demanded by new wealth and political cronyism? And what is the effect of religion on our lives? Have we become more caring and compassionate, or does piety provide a mask, to disguise greed and ambition, and justify a contempt for the poor? This collection of stories will make you laugh, but it will also challenge you to reconsider what it means to be Zimbabwean in the 21st century.
