Book excerpt: From their introduction in the late nineteenth century, picture postcards have been a souvenir staple in every American community. These practical, yet collectable mailers promote local businesses and tourism, and celebrate historic and scenic localities. Danvers, known as Salem Village during the infamous 1692 witch-hunt, became an independent town in the 1750s. By the twentieth century, local boosters spotlighted the town's rich architectural heritage, local institutions, and vibrant business district by producing a variety of postcard views. Ancient saltbox houses associated with the witchcraft days, eighteenth-century gambrel-roofed dwellings that sheltered Revolutionary War patriots, the mansion occupied by famed poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and the Danvers Insane Asylum, a majestic state-operated facility, were frequent postcard subjects. This book samples the best of Danvers's twentieth-century postcard heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-nineteenth century, the community of Danvers, Massachusetts, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its separation from Salem. Formerly known as Salem Village, Danvers had been the location in 1692 of an infamous witch hunt, and in the nineteenth century it still retained numerous historical ties to those early, traumatic times. In this marvelous new photographic history, the story of Danvers from 1850 to 1899 unfolds before our eyes through the medium of early American photography. Readers will gaze at the fresh, young faces of Danvers shoemakers and farmers turned soldiers, dressed in uniform and prepared to fight in the Civil War. The pocket villages of Danvers are revealed and illustrated both in images of structures forever lost and others now preserved as historic house museums. Also illustrated are many of the elegant estates occupied by such notables as poet John Greenleaf Whittier and Secretary of War William C. Endicott.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Ghost Short Stories 1850-1899: A Phantasmal Ghost Anthology contains the best ghost stories from the last half of the 19th century. It includes shocking tales from popular American and Victorian authors including: Bram Stoker, M. R. James, Joseph Le Fanu, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Nesbit, and Francis Marion Crawford. Andrew Barger, award-winning author and editor of Phantasmal: Best Ghost Short Stories 1800-1849, Best Horror Short Stories 1850-1899, and The Divine Dantes trilogy, has now researched the finest ghost stories for the last half of the nineteenth century and combined them in one haunting collection. He has added his familiar scholarly touch by annotating the stories, providing story background information, author photos and a list of ghost stories considered to settle on the most frightening and well-written tales. Victorians: Victors of the Ghost Story (2016) by Andrew Barger - Andrew sets the stage for this haunting ghost anthology. The Upper Berth (1886) by Francis Marion Crawford - You will never think of cruising on a ship the same way after reading "The Upper Berth". In Kropfsberg Keep (1895) by Ralph Adams Cram - A gothic setting yields a nightmare for a couple of "ghost hunters". Lost Hearts (1895) by M. R. James - This early M. R. James classic ghost story is one of his best. The Familiar (1872) by Joseph Le Fanu - Ever feel like you are being watched? The Haunted Organist of Hurly Burly (1886) by Rosa Mulholland - You will never view an organ the same way again. No. 1 Branch Line: The Signal Man (1865) by Charles Dickens - Are the nervous habits of a train tracks operator all in his mind? Hurst of Hurstcote (1893) by Edith Nesbit - A moldering house and--of course--ghosts. The Judge’s House (1891) by Bram Stoker - The author of Dracula never disappoints. The Yellow Sign (1895) by Robert Chambers - A painter sees someone watching him from a busy New York street. The Haunted and the Haunters (1859) by Edward Bulwer-Lytton - The oldest and most haunting ghost short story in the anthology. I am deeply and horribly convinced, that there does exist beyond this a spiritual world—a system whose workings are generally in mercy hidden from us—a system which may be, and which is sometimes, partially and terribly revealed. “The Familiar” 1872 by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Book excerpt: In the winter of 1692 something terrible and frightening began in Salem Village. It started with several villagers having strange fits, screaming, and unnaturally contorting themselves, and ended with almost two hundred people in jail, and at least twenty-five dead. Witchcraft accusations--claims that some inhabitants had forsaken God to become servants of the Devil--spread from Salem Village across Massachusetts, ensnaring innocent people from all strata of society under a burden of assumed guilt. One of the most significant accusations, and most unlikely, was against a seventy-one-year-old grandmother, Rebecca Nurse. The accusations against Nurse, a well-respected member in the community, seemed unbelievable. Unflinchingly, this ailing elderly woman insisted on her innocence and refused to falsely confess. Supported by many in Salem, Nurse's family and neighbors challenged her accusers in court and prepared a thorough defense for her, yet nothing could surmount the fear of witchcraft, and she was sentenced to death. Nurse, seen as a martyr for the truth, later became the first person accused of witchcraft to be memorialized in North America. In A Salem Witch: The Trial, Execution, and Exoneration of Rebecca Nurse, the first full account of Nurse's life, Daniel A. Gagnon vividly recreates seventeenth-century Salem, and in the process challenges previous interpretations of Nurse's life and the 1692 witch hunt in general. Through primary source research, he reveals how the Nurse family's role in several disputes prior to the witch hunt was different than previously thought, as well as how Nurse's case helps answer the important question of whether the accusations of witchcraft were caused by mental illness or malicious intent. A Salem Witch reveals a remarkable woman whose legacy has transformed how the witch hunt has been remembered and memorialized.

Out of a Baptist revival upbringing, John, Asa, Judson, and Abby Hutchinson transformed themselves in the 1840s into national icons, taking up the reform issues of their age and singing out especially for temperance and antislavery reform. This engaging book is the first to tell the full story of the Hutchinsons, how they contributed to the transformation of American culture, and how they originated the marketable American protest song. /DIVdivThrough concerts, writings, sheet music publications, and books of lyrics, the Hutchinson Family Singers established a new space for civic action, a place at the intersection of culture, reform, religion, and politics. The book documents the Hutchinsons’ impact on abolition and other reform projects and offers an original conception of the rising importance of popular culture in antebellum America./DIV/DIV
