Astronomy must also have been specially congenial to the future poet, who mastered all that was known at his day as to'the courses of the stars and the place of the world in the universe. Music, too, was another source of delight to him, and he often alludes to the sweet sounds of various instruments, or to the art of singing, in the manner of one to whom music was a real solace and a great joy. In Sara Wiley Drummond, ardour was this quality. She seemed incarnate youth, one whose hope, energy, and fire could not be quenched by any weariness, or care, or grief. One purpose bound together all the diverse and eager interests of her life. Hers was the poet's great desire, hers the poet's noble satisfaction. With humility she moved, as was meet in the follower of great masters, and yet with dignity as a labourer in a high calling. Not for an instant did she doubt her task, and into it she threw an enthusiasm and a courage such as are never content with easy achievement. Born to ease, she counted all the fair surroundings of Use adjuncts, pleasant, at times powerful, but to be dismissed without a thought if need were. Her delight in luxuries was as candid as the enjoyment of a child, her indifference to them was superb. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Scraps of Verse and Prose by Dante Gabriel Rossetti In this general view my brother was, I think, not far from agreeing with myself: in the case of such poets as Coleridge, Shelley, or Keats, he would - for the purposes of any edition affecting to be complete - have put in every thing he could lay his hands upon, although he would always have preferred, for his own reading, a compendium of the masterpieces. But, as regards himself individually, personal sensitivene'ss gave him' a different bias. He de tested the very idea that some of his boyish crudities (such as Sir Hug/t t/ze Heron, for which ingenuous persons are willing to give some ten times the price of his Collected Works) should ever be brought forward. I therefore, in compiling the Collected Worles, excluded all such crudities; and to this day I would not publish, even in a casual and. Scattered form, those writings of his which I believe he would have considered essentially poor or bad. But there are some other things, of minor importance or completeness - sometimes intentionally jocular - which appear to me considerably removed from being bad or poor, and which he himself would probably have thought admis sible for eventual printing, though not for publication dur ing his lifetime, or as a portion of his solid literary life work. The pieces which I have here put together are of this kind. They all belong to the days of his youth - the latest of them to 1853 or thereabouts, when he completed his twenty-fifth year. I think that every one of them has its value, whether on the ground of intrinsic merit, or as illustrating some phase of his mental development and practice. I have grouped them together as best I can, and added a few remarks by way of elucidation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divina Commedia of Dante: Translated Into English Verse The quotation, placed on the title-page, will at once show what is the mind of the Translator, in regard to the great difficulty - the impossibility, as some think of his present undertaking. He has been made to understand and feel what is meant by the ponderoso tema, on the one hand; and his own omero mortal, on the other. His hope, however, is, that this motto, standing at the frcnt of the volume, will bespeak for him betimes the indulgence of the Reader, and prevent the biasimo, which, more or less, he has good cause to apprehend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Vol. 1 of 2: Poems, Prose-Tales and Literary Papers HE most adequate mode of prefacing the Collected Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as of most authors, would probably be to offer a broad general view of his writings, and to analyse with some critical precision his relation to other writers, contemporary or otherwise, and the merits and defects of his performances. In this case, as in how few others, one would also have to consider in what degree his mind worked con sentaneously or diversely in two several arts - the art of poetry and the art of painting. But the hand of a. Brother 15 not the fittest to undertake any work of this scope. My preface will not therefore deal with themes such as these, but will be confined to minor matters. Which may nevertheless be relevant also within their limits. And first may come a very brief outline of the few events of an outwardly uneventful life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante and His Circle: With the Italian Poets Preceding Him (1100-1200-1300) That there are many defects in this collection, or that the above merit is its defect, or that it has no merits but only defects, are discoveries so sure to be made if necessary (or perhaps here and there in any case), that I may safely leave them in other hands. The series has probably a wider scope than some readers might look for, and includes now and then (though I believe in rare instances) matter which may not meet with universal approval 5 and whose introduction, needed as it is by the literary aim of my work, is I know inconsistent with the principles of pretty bookmaking. My wish has been to give a full and truthful view of early Italian poetry to make it appear to consist only of certain elements to the exclusion of others equally belongmg to it.
