Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title of this collection suggests, the poems in Tap Dancing on the Razor's Edge reflect a dynamic tension between exuberant joy and exquisite pain, with a liberal dose of sardonic humor. In the headlong pursuit of love and redemption, the poems in this collection peal back the subliminal layers of comfort surrounding the soul and wander between the darkness and the light with a sense of alacrity often bemused, sometimes ironic, frequently comedic, and too often alarmed at what they find. They are honest and rhythmic and sonorous to the ear. In some ways, they are a throwback to older and kinder sensitivities. More often, they open doors that demand to be opened, and sometimes kicked in. They are a source of revelation, adventure, and ultimately self- discovery. Here is a poet unafraid to grapple with the dark matter in our lives and confront the bright light that often enlivens our journey. Who imbues striking narratives with alternating bursts of vivid imagery, singular rhythms, engaging pathos, and a relentless dose of humor. Here is a poet who loves to sing, and we are fortunate to hear his voice. Enjoy the ride.

She performs on behalf of this most evanescent of the arts an act of significant recovery. By tracking down--often in rare stage revivals, on film or on videotape--as many of the works by major creators of the last half century as survive, and by describing them . . . in a manner that combines accuracy and imagination, she has enriched our knowledge of the past and added immeasurably, to our resent stock of critical resources."--Dale Harris, New York Times Book Review "Siegel has a gut feeling for dance and a razor-sharp intelligence about it. It's an irresistible combination."--Margaret Pierpont, Dance Magazine "After you've seen and felt dance this deeply--even vicariously--your way of looking at dance will never be the same."--William Albright, Houston Post She sees, acutely, with her muscles as well as her eyes. She thinks about dance as much as she experiences it. . . . This is dance choreography reconstituted. Dances leap off the page. . . . The ability to do that is extraordinary."--Jean Bunke, Des Moines Sunday Register "The sections in which she describes the dances themselves make up the bulk of the book and they are profoundly illuminating. . . . These descriptions represent an amazing literary, as well as critical, accomplishment, for they are both accurate and resonant, both objective and enlightening, both formal and personal."--Laura Shapiro, The Real Paper "Siegel draws on her years of experience as a working dance critic, a profession she has helped to shape, and brings to a range of American dance a sense of honesty and a mind that wants to understand the antecedents of what is currently in vogue as the dance explosion."--Iris M. Fanger, The Christian Science Monitor

Book excerpt: [Abstract] This thesis explores the question, What is the experience of struggling for intimacy? The study is qualitative in nature and employs a heuristic research paradigm. Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine co-researchers--six women and three men--who were chosen because they were experiencing a struggle for intimacy in their romantic relationships. A thorough literature review revealed a massive volume of material on intimacy. The literature ranged from academic analyses of the nature of healthy and unhealthy relationships to lay self-help books instructing people on how to achieve intimacy. Some material focused on issues that cause friction in relationships, such as money, sex, and the division of household tasks. This study differs in its fous on how individuals experience the process of struggling for intimacy, rather components of intimacy or the issues that might divide a couple. When co-researchers discuss these divisive issues (e.g., jealousy, finances), it is in the context of how these issues trigger them as they struggle for intimacy. This study emphasizes the changing naure of relationships, rather than a linear development from strangers to intimacy. It notes the polarities of struggling toward and away from intimacy with such themes as ownership versus blame; commitment versus distrust; vulnerability versus self-protection; and expectations versus release. The themes (and subthemes in parentheses) are: commitment (empathy and trust); individuation (expectations, control, and self-focus); communication; ownership (movement); work; and the body. Its findings are both concrete and a recognition of the complexity and constant change involved in intimacy. The study's tindings will be useful to almost all psychotherapists in view of the fact that relationship issues concern most adolescent and adult clients, single or in a couple, as well as to educators whose students carry around unrealistic notions of love.

Book excerpt: A guide to understanding the relationship between Western psychology and the contemplative sprituality of the East—and how one’s spiritual journey can be enriched by both How can we connect the spiritual realizations of Buddhism with the psychological insights of the West? In Toward a Psychology of Awakening John Welwood addresses this question with comprehensiveness and depth, building on his innovative psychospiritual approach to health, healing, and spirituality. He covers the following topics: • What can the spiritual methodologies of the East teach us about psychological health? • What issues arise when the recognition of our larger nature challenges our very conception of individual self ? • What new directions become possible when psychological work is undertaken in a spiritual context? • How does Western psychological understanding affect our approach to spirituality? Welwood's psychology of awakening brings together three major dimensions of human existence: personal, interpersonal, and suprapersonal in one overall framework of understanding and practice.
