Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason for Yeats's fascination with dance became obvious to me when I understood his concept of theatre which was very different from the theatre of his day. He shunned naturalistic theatre - plays based on contemporary ideas and events prevalent in the work of George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. Yeats wanted his drama to by-pass the intellect, to excite the imagination rather than the mind. He believed that the world of events and ideas was transitory, passing, whereas the reality of the imagination was lasting. He wanted his theatre to communicate experiences which were outside the scope of reason, experiences which evoked the "intimacies, ecstasies and anguish of the soul-life." He wanted his theatre to create magic, to be a mystical happening which lured the audience to "the edge of trance." He wanted to create poems without words. Dance was the perfect solution. Through dance he could convey those "intuitive perceptions" that could be comprehended only through the pulses, "in that moment where everything is intelligible in one throb of the artery."

Download or read book The Plays of W. B. Yeats written by S. Ellis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates Yeats's experiments with the media of language and dance in his plays. He was allied to other artists of the 1890s in his fascination with the biblical dancer Salome and in his preoccupation with things Japanese, particularly 'Noh' Theatre with its central dance. The impact of Diaghliev's Ballets Russes also played its part in influencing Yeats's drama, and his interest in the 'dance-as-meaning' debate places him firmly not only in his time but also in our own.

Book excerpt: The stage is any bare place in a room close to the wall. A screen with a pattern of mountain and sky can stand against the wall, or a curtain with a like pattern hang upon it, but the pattern must only symbolize or suggest. One musician enters and then two others, the first stands singing while the others take their places. Then all three sit down against the wall by their instruments, which are already there-a drum, a zither, and a flute. Or they unfold a cloth as in 'The Hawk's Well, ' while the instruments are carried in.

Book Synopsis Dancing at the Crossroads by : Helena Wulff
Download or read book Dancing at the Crossroads written by Helena Wulff and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing at the crossroads used to be young people ́s opportunity to meet and enjoy themselves on mild summer evenings in the countryside in Ireland - until this practice was banned by law, the Public Dance Halls Act in 1935. Now a key metaphor in Irish cultural and political life, ́dancing at the crossroads ́ also crystallizes the argument of this book: Irish dance, from Riverdance (the commercial show) and competitive dancing to dance theatre, conveys that Ireland is to be found in a crossroads situation with a firm base in a distinctly Irish tradition which is also becoming a prominent part of European modernity. Helena Wulff is Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University. Publications include Twenty Girls (Almqvist & Wiksell International, 1988), Ballet across Borders (Berg, 1998), Youth Cultures (co-edited with Vered Amit-Talai, Routledge, 1995), New Technologies at Work (co-edited with Christina Garsten, Berg, 2003). Her research focusses on dance, visual culture, and Ireland.
