A Face in the Crowd by Stephen King and Stewart O'Nan (FIRST TIME IN PRINT!) Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. It's Rays/Mariners, and David Price is breezing through the line-up. Suddenly, in a seat a few rows up beyond the batter, Evers sees the face of someone from decades past, someone who shouldn't be at the ballgame, shouldn't be on the planet. And so begins a parade of people from Evers's past, all of them occupying that seat behind home plate. Until one day Dean Evers sees someone even eerier... The Longest December by Richard Chizmar (EXPANDED VERSION!) Bob and Katy Howard are a typical middle-aged couple living the good life in the suburbs. They're happily married, have successful careers, and a grown son starting college. Their recently widowed next-door neighbor, James Wilkinson, is practically a member of the Howard family. When police show up at the Howard's doorstep one snowy December morning with the news that they have been investigating Wilkinson for a series of violent crimes, Bob and Katy are left in shock and disbelief. The elderly James Wilkinson they know and love is kind and gentle. He shared their Thanksgiving table just a couple weeks earlier. He couldn't possibly be responsible for the gruesome deeds of which he's being accused. Or could he? The Longest December (a revised and expanded version of Chizmar's acclaimed novella, A Long December) is a cat-and-mouse, Hitchcockian thriller that will shock you with its brutal twists and turns while also breaking your heart. Stephen King calls it ...a really terrific piece of work. I couldn't put it down. Chizmar played his cards with great craft. I'm an old hand at this, but I kept chasing the red herrings.

Book excerpt: This is a biographical study of Jose Carlos Mariategui, one of Latin America's greatest literary figures, which is organized around the Lima scandal of 1917. At the time he was a young journalist of 23, an autodidact intellectual with an insurrectionary character. The scandal erupted when he led a small group to the General Cemetery where a dancer gave her interpretation of Chopin's Funeral March. Although the participants wished to have an artistic experience, the reaction of the Lima elite was negative: the performance was viewed in terms of "lewdness" and "desecration," the participants were arrested, placed in prison, their case was forwarded for criminal prosecution, and the daily newspapers made the most out of the incident. This study focuses on the scandal in the context of Peruvian society in 1917. It examines the roots of Mariategui's rebellion by exploring his manner of dealing with lameness and physical mutilation, the desertion of his family by his father and Mariategui's search for a father figure, his humble Andean roots on his mother's side, and his ambivalence--half yearning, half hostility--toward his father's elite social sector. Throughout the work Mariategui's writings are quoted as illustrations and supplements to points made in the text. The object is to answer the questions: Why a dance? Why a cemetery? And why a dance in a cemetery?--by looking at patterns of repetition in Mariategui's life. The study becomes a psychobiography as well as a literary one.

After a harmless night of petty property damage leads to the unthinkable, the red and blue lights of a cop car are the last things these boys want to see. Especially a cop car driven by something not quite human. Enter Mary Washington and Ottessa Jones. Their sons have been best friends for years, and now Josh and Alonzo have been abducted in the dead of night. Worst of all, the local sheriff refuses to believe they're missing, leaving it up to Mary and Ottessa to take the law into their own hands before a family of ungodly lunatics can complete a ritual decades in the making. Together they will embark on a surreal and violent journey into a land of corrupt law enforcement, small-town secrets, gravitational oddities, and ancient black magic.

Book excerpt: Longtime residents of Harper's Cove believe that something is wrong with the Widow's Point Lighthouse. Some say it's cursed. Others claim it's haunted. Originally built in 1838, three workers were killed during the lighthouse's construction, including one who mysteriously plunged to his death from the catwalk. That tragic accident was never explained, and it was just the beginning of the terror. In the decades that followed, nearly two dozen additional deaths occurred in or around the lighthouse including cold-blooded murder, suicide, unexplained accidents and disappearances, the slaughter of an entire family, and the inexplicable death of a Hollywood starlet who was filming a movie on the grounds. The lighthouse was finally shuttered tight in 1988 and a security fence was erected around the property. No one has been inside since. Until tonight. Thomas Livingston is the acclaimed author of thirteen books about the supernatural and this evening he will enter the Widow's Point Lighthouse, searching for material for his next bestseller. He will be locked inside for the weekend with no way of contacting the outside world. And although no human has stepped foot inside the structure in nearly three decades, Livingston will not be alone.
