Book Synopsis Moving Otherwise by : Victoria Fortuna
Download or read book Moving Otherwise written by Victoria Fortuna and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Otherwise examines how contemporary dance practices in Buenos Aires, Argentina enacted politics within climates of political and economic violence from the mid-1960s to the mid-2010s. From the repression of military dictatorships to the precarity of economic crises, contemporary dancers and audiences consistently responded to and reimagined the everyday choreographies that have accompanied Argentina's volatile political history. The titular concept, "moving otherwise" names how both concert dance and its off-stage practice and consumption offer alternatives to and modes to critique the patterns of movement and bodily comportment that shape everyday life in contexts marked by violence. Drawing on archival research based in institutional and private collections, over fifty interviews with dancers and choreographers, and the author's embodied experiences as a collaborator and performer with active groups, the book analyzes how a wide range of practices moved otherwise, including concert works, community dance initiatives, and the everyday labor that animates dance. It demonstrates how these diverse practices represent, resist, and remember violence and engender new forms of social mobilization on and off the theatrical stage. As the first book length critical study of Argentine contemporary dance, it introduces a breadth of choreographers to an English speaking audience, including Ana Kamien, Susana Zimmermann, Estela Maris, Alejandro Cervera, Renate Schottelius, Susana Tambutti, Silvia Hodgers, and Silvia Vladimivsky. It also considers previously undocumented aspects of Argentine dance history, including crossings between contemporary dancers and 1970s leftist political militancy, Argentine dance labor movements, political protest, and the prominence of tango themes in contemporary dance works that address the memory of political violence. Contemporary dance, the book demonstrates, has a rich and diverse history of political engagement in Argentina.

Book Synopsis Dance Education Certification in Alabama by : Lisa E. Gibbs
Download or read book Dance Education Certification in Alabama written by Lisa E. Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance as an academic endeavor has held a place in higher education since 1926. From its beginnings as a major of study under a department of physical education, dance in academia moved into departments of fine arts and flourished as an expressive art form in the mid to late 20th century. In the 1990s, dance in K12 education similarly moved from its beginnings in physical education into arts education. By 2002, the arts, including dance, music, theatre, and visual art, were named core academic subjects in national education policy. Dance educators and researchers encouraged departments of dance to include dance education as a degree program. How did higher education dance programs in Alabama respond to this new opportunity for their students? This case study investigated undergraduate dance education programming in Alabama from the perspective of current faculty. Interviews were drawn from faculty at the three universities in Alabama with dance degree programs, with additional data collected from current and former K12 dance educators. Document analysis included university mission statements and coursework along with state administrative code and standards related to dance educating. Informed by the theoretical lens of Giddens and the conceptual frame of Bolman and Deal, the study identified issues related to dance education degree programming and certification in Alabama. Keywords and Phrases: undergraduate dance education programming, public policy, K12 public education, organizational culture, structuration theory, four-frame model.

Download or read book Moving Lessons written by Janice Ross and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Lessons is an insightful and sophisticated look at the origins and influence of dance in American universities, focusing on Margaret H'Doubler, who established the first university courses and the first degree program in dance (at the University of Wisconsin). Dance educator and historian Janice Ross shows that H'Doubler (1889–1982) was both emblematic of her time and an innovator who made deep imprints in American culture. An authentic "New Woman," H'Doubler emerged from a sheltered female Victorian world to take action in the public sphere. She changed the way Americans thought, not just about female physicality but also about higher education for women. Ross brings together many discourses—from dance history, pedagogical theory, women's history, feminist theory, American history, and the history of the body—in intelligent, exciting, and illuminating ways and adds a new chapter to each of them. She shows how H'Doubler, like Isadora Duncan and other modern dancers, helped to raise dance in the eyes of the middle class from its despised status as lower-class entertainment and "dangerous" social interaction to a serious enterprise. Taking a nuanced critical approach to the history of women's bodies and their representations, Moving Lessons fills a very large gap in the history of dance education.
