Book excerpt: Observation and analyses were made of certain damage caused by Hurricane Betsy which occurred in the Bahama Islands and in the southeastern portion of the United States, September 6-10, 1965. Damage was caused by direct wind forces, by windblown debris acting as missiles, by wind-toppled structures and vegetation, by wind -induced waterwaves and tides, by uncontrolled waterborne structures and objects, by direct rainfall, and by flooding of streams and other water areas. Particular note was made of damage to buildings and other framed structures, waterfront and harbor structures, and exposed electrical and mechanical facilities. In the hope of reducing susceptibility of such installations, certain recommendations and proposals for research and development are presented. (Author).
