Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geographical position between the gulfs of Naples and Salerno made pre-Roman Sorrento a fundamental point of passage. Around the inhabited centre, sacred sites or scattered settlements developed, including the sanctuary of Athena on the extreme tip of the peninsula near Punta Campanella. This book explores the historical development of the sanctuary from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. Drawing on partly unpublished archaeological documentation and literary sources, the book provides useful elements for understanding the site and its relationship with the surrounding area. Sorrento and the Greek presence in the Gulf of Naples are linked to the sanctuary installation, perhaps first dedicated to the Sirens but surely after to Athena. Judging from literary sources, it was one of the best-known places of worship in ancient Italy. It was only in the 1980s that the discovery of an Oscan inscription with a dedication to Minerva made it possible to hypothesise the presence of a sanctuary near the Medieval tower at Punta Campanella. The analysis of the archaeological documentation known until now, the study of the new archaeological plans and the material culture (ceramics) from the site make it possible to better understand the development and the importance of the sanctuary. This book, therefore, defines the historical and territorial development of the sanctuary of Athena, reconstructing the history of the territory of ancient Surrentum and, above all, its most important sanctuary. The book will be of particular interest to archaeologists, ancient historians and historians of religion.

Book excerpt: "The dual exhibitions...focus on large - and small - scale repetitions of Greek statuary types in ancient Rome and modern Europe. The two exhibitions - which for us mark the start of a dialogue between the new space in Milan designed by Rem Koolhaas and our venue in Venice, in Ca’ Corner della Regina - depitct antiquity as being different from how we customarily think of it: whereby statuary white was color, uniqueness was multiple, and authorship shared."--Page 45.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Etruscans have long been a rich source of research and intellectual inquiry as the most significant ethnic group who resided in ancient Etruria, current-day Tuscany and Umbria in Italy. A well-defined polity, the Etruscans were an advanced people whose presence on the Italian peninsula from the 8th to 4th century B.C. had an enormous impact on Roman culture, whose rise of power saw the collapse of Etruscan civilization. This book is extensive in its scope; it traces the rise of the Etruscans at the end of the Bronze Age; examines the economic structure of the society; explores the emergence of a powerful aristocracy in the period from 750-650 B.C.; and considers the religious and cultural life of the group. This knowledge has largely been gleaned from a wealth of monuments and material culture which the Etruscans left behind including architecture (the various forms of which indicate familial structure and socio-economic standing, not to mention the larger social structure of Etruscan society) and applied arts, such as bronze objects for both ceremonial use and everyday life, which were produced by an artisan class for a wealthy and demanding aristocracy. Etruscan contributions to the history of art are also of immense importance and are explored in depth in this volume. Etruscan wall painting was exceptional in that it is one of the few examples of pre-Roman artistic production of this genre. Sculpture was also a relatively highly developed form of art, and the Etruscans are known for their important experiments with form. Noted scholar Mario Torelli, editor of the book, gathers here an illuminating collection of essays reflective of the most current research on theEtruscans. As a professor of classical archaeology for nearly three decades who has directed archeological digs at some of the most significant Etruscan sites, Torelli offers a unique insight into the scholarly terrain of Etruscan studies. Torelli also contributes a substantive essay on Etruscan religion, exploring the rather exceptional character of this important aspect of Etruscan life. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful reproductions of Etruscan art and culture, this impressive catalogue explores every aspect of the Etruscan people and their artistic and cultural legacy in the most expansive consideration of their enormous contribution to Western culture to date. The exhibition of the same name, organized by the world-renowned Palazzo Grassi, Venice, and this volume are destined to be landmarks in Etruscan studies.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subtitled `mining and metallurgical spheres' this book starts with a geographic survey of known metal producers in the protohistoric West Mediterranean. Then the distribution of different metalwork forms is discussed, ranging from swords to fibulae. Two smaller sections cover protohistoric metallurgical technology and ships and navigation. This survey has the advantage of incorporating absolute dating and archaeometallurgical evidence into the conventional typologically based version. It also stresses the complexity of a commercial system where different forms seem to have moved in very different spheres. Of especial interest will be Giardino's views on the apparent lack of contact between Mycenean and West Med. metallurgical worlds and the existence of an Atlantic/West Med. stylistic `koine'. His suggestion that roving metal workers carried their technological skills round the Mediterranean world but remained stylistically open-minded revives a Childean doctrine of the `divine smith' and is sure to be controversial. Bilingual parallel texts in Italian and good English.
