Book excerpt: Stranger Things meets One of Us Is Lying in Devon Taylor's creepy paranormal mystery about four friends who find themselves hunted by a malevolent presence in their sleepy hometown. It knows your fear... Summer, 1989. Four best friends—Gabe, Kimberly, Charlie, and Sonya—are preparing for their last summer together before senior year, after which they’ll all be splitting up to start college in different parts of the country. They make a promise to always find their way back to each other, no matter how far away from their sleepy Pennsylvania hometown they get. But their plans are destroyed when a plane crashes right on top of their favorite hangout outside of town—and right on top of them. In the catastrophic aftermath of the incident, Gabe, Sonya and Charlie are plagued by eerie visions and messages from an unknown watcher. They soon realize that the plane crash was no accident, and now they are being hunted by a sinister presence. And everyone is still searching for Kimberly, who has been missing ever since Gabe saw somebody wearing a gas mask carry her out of the woods the day the sky fell down on them... Praise for Dagger Hill: "A wild and satisfying romp through small town friendships, government conspiracies, bloody histories, long-kept secrets—and all of your deepest, darkest fears." —Katrina Leno, author of Horrid "Visceral ... a jolting read in the style of Stephen King—one with plenty of 1980s nostalgia and a tender LGBTQ romance." —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: The exotic and impressive grave goods from burials of the ÔWessex CultureÕ in Early Bronze Age Britain are well known and have inspired influential social and economic hypotheses, invoking the former existence of chiefs, warriors and merchants and high-ranking pastoralists. Alternative theories have sought to explain the how display of such objects was related to religious and ritual activity rather than to economic status, and that groups of artefacts found in certain graves may have belonged to religious specialists. This volume is the result of a major research that aimed to investigate Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age grave goods in relation to their possible use as special dress accessories or as equipment employed within ritual activities and ceremonies. Many items of adornment can be shown to have formed elements of elaborate costumes, probably worn by individuals, both male and female, who held important ritual roles within society. Furthermore, the analysis has shown that various categories of object long interpreted as mundane types of tool were in fact items of bodily adornment or implements used in ritual contexts, or in the special embellishment of the human body. Although never intended to form a complete catalogue of all the relevant artefacts from England the volume provides an extensive, and intensively illustrated, overview of a large proportion of the grave goods from English burial sites.

He has also included many of the “best of” lists by more than fifty of the most important contributors to the genre.; Mr. Sobin spent more than two decades gathering the data and lists in this volume, much of that time he used to recheck the accuracy of the material he had collected. Several of the “best of” lists appear here for the first time in book form. Several others have been unavailable for a number of years.; Of special note, are Anthony Boucher’s “Best Picks for the Year.” Boucher, one of the major mystery reviewers of all time, reviewed for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times. From these resources Mr. Sobin created “Boucher’s Best” and “Important Lists to Consider,” lists that provide insight into important writing in the field from 1942 through Boucher’s death in 1968.? This is a great resource for all mystery readers and collectors.; ; Winner of the 2008 Macavity Awards for Best Mystery Nonfiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle of Bosworth was the culmination of the War of the Roses, the dynastic struggle between the houses of York and Lancaster that dominated England in the second half of the 15th century. Edward IV had secured the throne for the house of York, but his early death in 1483, followed by the death of his sons and the taking of the throne by his brother, Richard of York, saw a renewed outbreak of fighting. His reign began with a major rebellion and was dogged by rumours of his involvement in murder, with Richard facing threats not only from the lords he alienated but also the Lancastrian faction waiting in the wings. Henry Tudor eventually decided to take the huge risk of attempting to seize the throne and Richard's army marched to meet him, finally clashing near Market Bosworth. Guiding the reader from the campaign's origins to its aftermath, and covering the commanders and forces of King Richard III and Henry Tudor, this is a complete treatment of one of the most important events in English history. The story of Bosworth has been transformed in the 20th century as an extensive survey between 2005 and 2009 by the Battlefields Trust has pinpointed the location of the battlefield, for many years a source of debate and controversy, and this new history is based on that interpretation. It will also highlight the incredible discovery of Richard III's remains in Leicester, the study of the bones and relate this to what was previously thought to have happened to him at the end of the battle.

Following a mental breakdown, archaeologist Emma Carter convalesces in a rest home. Thoughts return to her childhood and to a windswept beach where she discovered a priceless gold artefact – an ugly gargoyle figure known as a Shiel Na Gig, representing a long forgotten deity from antiquity. She believes this is the source of her troubles as she reflects on events that have occurred over the past few months… Emma’s partner Sam Layton, a renowned psychic medium, is having problems of his own. Plagued by unsettling dreams that involve a Celtic warrior’s death and his love for Eirene, a slave girl who is set to be sacrificed to a sun deity, Sam witnesses the dying warrior burying a golden statuette on a beach. Not only do his dreams bother him, but he is suddenly called away to help his former lover Theia with problems concerning her companion Abi, whose erratic behaviour points to the supernatural… What is the mystery of the 'triumvirate' of Shiel Na Gig goddesses? Who or what will stop at nothing, including murder, to possess Sam and his friends? And will Sam be able to choose between his troubled relationship with Emma and the carefree time spent with Theia? The Golden Goddess is a fast-paced supernatural thriller that continues on from Nigel Plane’s first novel,The Daughters of Carrawburgh. Centred around Celtic deities, it is a gripping read that will appeal to fans of fantasy fiction.
